Northern Michigan University Wildcats 2016-17 Season Thread: Gotta Get Up And Try

Re: Northern Michigan University Wildcats 2016-17 Season Thread: Gotta Get Up And Try

Another disappointing season mercifully comes to an end. What are the chances Walt Kyle keeps his job after this season? His contract is up. I don't think the chances are good he gets an extension.

Re: Northern Michigan University Wildcats 2016-17 Season Thread: Gotta Get Up And Try

The old nemesis (no offense) shows up again for NMU in Sunday nite's (3-1) loss in game #3 vs Bemidji.... I thought they would have put in a better offensive effort after how well they played in Saturday's (4-2) win.... Hard to win when you only score (1) goal.... NMU finishes 2016-17 season at (13-22-4) so how does this factor in for Walt Kyle's future at NMU???? NMU has some good players coming back in 2017-18 with:

GOALIES
So. Atte Tolvanen
So. Mathias Israelsson
Fr. Tyger Howat

DEFENSEMEN
Jr. Jordan Klimek (11 points)
So. James Vermeulen
So. Connor Frantti
So. Ryan Black
Fr. Rylan Yaremko
Fr. Philip Beaulieu (19 points)

FORWARDS
Jr. Robbie Payne (29 points)
Jr. Filip Starzynski
So. Zach Diamantoni (20 points)
So. Troy Loggins (16 points)
So. Anthony Paskaruk
So. Denver Pierce
Fr. Darien Craighead (25 points)
Fr. Demico Hannoun
Fr. Luke Voltin
Fr. Adam Rockwood

Bemidji is one of the best defensive teams in the nation. Bitzer apparently gave up 3 goals or more only twice this season.

Am I disappointed at the outcome of the series? Of course. But I'm not really surprised. The Beavers are a darn good team (they did finish 1st after all). The Cats had a solid second half culminating in a gutsy performance this weekend. A lot to be proud of in a team that could have mailed it in after Christmas.

Agreed and I think it showed enough to keep Walt.

What I really like about the 2017-18 NMU Hockey team is that they will have (2) very good Goalies coming back with So. Atte Tolvanen & So. Mathias Israelsson, (4) good Defensemen coming back with Jr. Jordan Klimek (11 points), So. James Vermeulen, Fr. Rylan Yaremko, Fr. Philip Beaulieu (19 points) & blue chip D recruit Luke Jaycox (6'3" 200lbs) coming in and (4) high scoring Forwards coming back with Jr. Robbie Payne (29 points), Fr. Darien Craighead (25 points), So. Zach Diamantoni (20 points) & So. Troy Loggins (16 points) to form a very good nucleus for the NMU hockey team next year so NMU has a good group of players coming back next year to be excited about....

Put in a better effort? The shots on goal were nearky identical 21-20) to Saturday night and there were more Grade A scoring chance. Didn't show up? Really?

Ugh, this scares me after watching them play this past weekend. Is anyone getting any looks that may leave early?

This. So much this.

The 'Cats didn't roll over like Lake State (seriously, eight-nothing?), or let the series go chalk like the others. It went three games against the unanimous WCHA season leader (who's first league loss was the first week of December).

This team easily could have decided at Christmas to pack it in, players, coaches... we know the casual fans gave up long before Christmas. But they didn't. At the first game I saw (the 'Cats first home win), the coaches were still fighting for their players, showing emotion to the refs.

This team never quit.

Re: Northern Michigan University Wildcats 2016-17 Season Thread: Gotta Get Up And Try

I never said they didn't show up as a (2-1) hockey game says differently.... All I said was scoring (1) goal was not a great offensive showing.... You have to put the puck in the net in order to win.... NMU not being able to punch one in during that (5:00) Major Power Play was a big factor in this game.... They obviously played very well in order to have it at (2-1) at the end without the empty netter....

I watched the games on WCHA TV. Bitzer played far better on Sunday than he did on Saturday. NMU actually had better chances in game 3. They also gave up fewer chances on Sunday than they did Saturday. Bitzer was average on Saturday, Tolvanen outstanding and NMU got the win. On Sunday Tolvanen was good, but Bitzer was better. BSU wins.

I hope your AD and administration are smart enough to continue what they established once the team got healthy and got all its players back.

You did say "I thought they would put in a little better offensive effort," when in fact the effort was as good or better on Sunday. They had more Grade A's on Sunday, but like Rapids said, the Bemidji keeper was much better on Sunday than he was Saturday. I thought we played better on Sunday as well, but with a different result.

Regarding that... Here's just some numbers to digest that show this isn't Walt's problem. Attendance vs Record vs Home Record at the Berry and All-Time for NMU. Each had their own tab.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1siSW5r0G0WIipHQ9GKEKHPygvpYKNzMY31Jn_Riu13Q/edit?usp=sharing

Couple of notes from the BEC records:
- Attendance was sliding pretty hard until Walt took over.
- 2006-07 was the first low water year, and attendance never rebounded.
- 2009-10, which culminated in NMU's first NCAA appearance in eleven years, never saw a following year attendance bump. In fact, good years almost seemed to be followed up by terrible attendance.

Couple of notes from the all-time records:
- Does anyone know what the capacity of Lakeview was prior to it's remodel in 1999? There is no way the fire marshal looked the other way for 135% attendance.
- Bad years early in the program were rewarded with better attendance, good years had declines, except for the two year run to 1991.
- 1992 was the highest attended games, and never hit that stride ever again.
- There was a slight bump when re-joining the CCHA, but the honeymoon faded quickly.

Lakeview arena prior to the expansion in the early '80s was roughly 3200 and after it was roughly 4400. I attended games from 1978 to 1990 and it was full most nights. Exceptions were the first weekend of deer season and Holiday weekends/breaks that were half full.

Re: Northern Michigan University Wildcats 2016-17 Season Thread: Gotta Get Up And Try

I was obviously referring to goals scored and not the quality of shots taken.... It was a very close game and could have gone either way.... NMU had us on pins & needles with every pass, shot, hit, line change, etc so it was a very exciting game to listen to on the radio.... I still say NMU not getting a goal during that (5:00) Major penalty was definitely a factor in the game though.... I'm really bummed out that the season is now over as every NMU Hockey game is an event to look forward to when you're a fan like I am so any comments that I make on this forum are with NMU's success in mind and I hope everyone realizes that on here.... I'm already looking forward to next year's team....

You're a terrific fan. Great to have those who stick with the Cats!

Davyd, any idea what October weekend is the Green Bay series?

4105 in 1998-1999

Much appreciated to the both of you. I thought there had to be some sort of a bump with how the attendance jumped like it did. I was thinking 110% was more like the capacity with the standing room available at Lakeview. I'll play with the numbers and adjust it accordingly soon.

I don't have the exact dates, but it's normally the first or second weekend of October.

Based upon the WCHA scheduling formula, which would be a reverse of the 2015-16 sechedule, in conference, I'm pretty sure we travel to Fairbanks, Anchorage, Huntsville, Tech (2 home & home series), Mankato, Ferris & Bemidji. Home against Bowling Green, LSSU, Huntsville, Tech, Mankato, Ferris & Fsirbsnks. Non-conference home & home vs LSSU, at Omaha, vs Wisconsin at Green Bay. There will be at least 2 more non-conference games as well.
