Northern Michigan University 2017 Off-Season. Zihuatanejo.

Re: Northern Michigan University 2017 Off-Season. Zihuatanejo.

We did it for the 2009-2010 season. For some reason I can't pull up the FSU season thread I did for that year, but here is the schedule for that season, including start times and attendance when you click on the box score:

Re: Northern Michigan University 2017 Off-Season. Zihuatanejo.

I am obviously in the minority, but I would love an earlier Sat start time of 5 or so. Traffic isn't an issue, there's nothing ever really pressing on a Saturday afternoon that prevents you from being on time (like work), when the game is over you feel like less of a hurry to get out of there and if you want you can still go out to eat/drink whatever without busting midnight. If you're taking kids it's even more ideal.

But again I realize I'm clearly in the minority on that. :)

and if you want you can still go out to eat/drink whatever without busting midnight.

However Late Night Happy Hour at Applebee's and BDubs with half off appetizers are popular post-game spots among our group at least.

I guess 5 o'clock has its pros and cons. We'll have to see where NMU goes with this survey.

Re: Northern Michigan University 2017 Off-Season. Zihuatanejo.

Earlier starts suck in Huntsville as well. We used to have to do them — 3:00 and 4:00 as well — because of the joy of sharing the arena with the local semi-pro team.

Ex-NMU Wildcats’ hockey coach Walt Kyle lands job with Newport Sports Agency as talent scout/recruiter????

May 22nd, 2017

MARQUETTE — Former Northern Michigan University hockey coach Walt Kyle lost his position back in March, but it didn’t take long for the Wildcats bench boss to find a new job.

However, it’s not in coaching. It’s with Newport Sports Management, which is an agency for pro hockey players that has a network all around the world from Canada to Scandinavia to Eastern Europe. It currently represents Detroit Red Wings players Petr Mrazek, Danny DeKeyser and Gustav Nyquist along with fellow NHLers Zach Parise, Steven Stamkos, Corey Perry, P.K. Subban, Bobby Ryan and Henrik Lundqvist just to name a few.

Kyle serves as a talent scout for the firm along with former Wildcat player Ed Ward, and recruits all over the country. He said he likes his new job because it allows him to stay in Marquette to help raise his family.

“I’m really happy with what I’m doing,” Kyle said. “Marquette is my home and I don’t have any plans of leaving. We’re really settled here.”

When asked if he wants to get back into coaching again, Kyle said he’s just enjoying his new job and not really thinking about it.

“I don’t know really,” he said. “I’m happy with everything right now and it’s a great job. I’ve coached for 36 years, so it’s nice to change things up a big and try something new.”

Good for him.

Re: Northern Michigan University 2017 Off-Season. Zihuatanejo.

'Cats announce schedule change, will play UAH at home in December and have decided to warm up in Alabama the weekend after playing in Anchorage.

Balances out the travel a smidge, but lessens the home games late in the season.

Re: Northern Michigan University 2017 Off-Season. Zihuatanejo.

Coulda been the Huntsville Havoc. The change is probably good for everyone but me. Team was way overloaded with road games in the first half and not much on the road after the Anchorage series.

does this help break up UAH's crazy home/away stretches that UAH had?

Re: Northern Michigan University 2017 Off-Season. Zihuatanejo.

Throws a wrench into the gears of my travel plans. Oh well.

Now if the God of Hockey Scheduling can have the Red Wings play at the Golden Knights within a day or two of NMU's Vegas trip, all will be put right.

I expect that it had to do with us flipping the home-and-home with ASU.

I was actually hoping for the same thing with the Blackhawks :D

Former Marquette/NMU Hockey player Justin Florek signs with the Iserlohn Roosters of the German Hockey League (DEL)????

May 25th, 2017

MILWAUKEE — Former Northern Michigan hockey star Justin Florek (6'4" 210lbs) has signed a one–year contract with the German club Iserlohn Roosters of the DEL (German Hockey League). This past season, the Marquette–native spent time with the AHL’s Milwaukee Admirals, scoring 30 points off 12 goals and 18 assists in 75 games. He was drafted in the fifth round back in 2010 by the Boston Bruins, playing in six career playoffs and even scoring a goal against the Detroit Red Wings. The Roosters are coming off a season where they went (17–27) and missed out on the playoffs.

Florek joined the Admirals initial Training Camp and quickly won himself a contract. His run prior to the Admirals featured a very great résumé. He was drafted in the fifth round of the 2010 NHL Draft by the Boston Bruins where he would go on to play 4 career games in the NHL as well as 6 career games in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. He scored a goal during both of those runs in the NHL with the Bruins but his career would shift to the AHL with the Providence Bruins and then for the 2015-16 season he joined the New York Islanders organization where he played for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

Once Florek joined the Admirals for the 2016-17 season he seemed to be a perfect fit. And the man who enjoyed his 27th birthday yesterday managed to erase what was a rough season for him with the Sound Tigers. Florek produced 30 points (12 goals, 18 assists) in 75 games for the Admirals this past season. That’s the most goals he scored since the 2013-14 season with the Bruins in the AHL – the same season that earned him those chances in the NHL.

Re: Northern Michigan University 2017 Off-Season. Zihuatanejo.

It's fun seeing "where are they now" from NMU alumni on Facebook, and it seems that many of them went pro in something other than sports.

Re: Northern Michigan University 2017 Off-Season. Zihuatanejo.

From the viewpoint of the NMU/Tech rivalry, who do the Northern fans hope does not find their way to Houghton.
The rivalry has been one sided most recently with NMU handing it to us on a regular occasion before the last couple years of Tech dominance. The Tech faithful acknowledged the "impressed" feeling with the hire of Grant Potulny and expect heated games very soon once again in the WCHA and standings. Do you have impressions of who you would absolutely not want to see take the helm of your rival in order to gain the advantage of new coaches?
