Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

Roby's not going anywhere. He said to alumni before one of our home games that he planned on staying at NU until his daughter (who I believe is in High School) graduated from NU - so that's what 6 or 7 more years?

He has the trust and respect of Aoun and the execs within the University, and isn't going anywhere.

He applied for other AD jobs before NU and didn't get them, at much lesser/non D-I schools. We were the suckers at the poker table who got bluffed when it came to hiring him.

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

Dennehy wasn't going anywhere, he just signed an extension and was making a name for himself at Merrimack. You're also assuming Cavanaugh and Quinn applied, I wouldn't be surprised if the late timing turned some traditional names away. Also, while I am sure that these men are qualified, I think we have an excellent chance at taking a smart hire here.

All 3 mentioned for a fact reached out for the job

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

The farce goes on! Now we have NO idea of who it might be unless Sabastien gets it. Just my opinion...this is all "bad-Robyism". And one has to wonder about Cronin...was it because of the NHL opportunity or a result of Roby interference or maybe a little of both...my bet is it was MOSTLY Roby interference...any way you cut it...real tough on a program that was really going somewhere! With all that's going on....I still LIKE Cronin....everything a good head coach should be...tough, forceful, blunt and confident in his own abilities. Sounds like everything Roby would hate! Maybe the wrong guy left!

Cronin was never coming back. Wanted to be reinstated and than say, ********** and leave..

Will be a great start to Sebastians regime if he gets it and has to set out for the first 5+/- games. I wonder if that is factored in?

Hokydad....all three you mentioned are "quality" coachs and I believe probably quite "forceful" so therefore not for NU and definitely not for Roby! And who knows what will happen....after all "yes, master" coachs are hard to find and seldom successful. I doubt Roby wants someone who is stronger than he is...and certainly NOT ANOTHER Cronin who probably told Roby where to "put-it" more than once. I agree with RossiRules and although I hope I'm wrong...I think GoNUS is being overly optomistic about getting an "excellent" candidate. Boy is everybody being "closed-mouthed"...doesn't anybody have any idea who the current candidates might be...not just who is not a candidate? We're dying here quickly!

You just have to point your browser to dieharddogs.com. that's where the serious NU folks share their thoughts. We've been discussing the final five candidates all week. FYI Grg Carvel interviewed on Monday, Sebastien on Tuesday, Next came Darren Yopyk, Then Jim Madigan and yesterday was Mark Carlson's day on the hotseat from 8:30 to 5. The braintrust was planning to convene late yesterday to make a choice, AFAIK no one has received a call. I am told that Yopyk signed with the Wild today as he didn't believe he had a shot at the NU job.

Join DHD. That is the place for the broadest discussion of all NU sports.

New to following NU. Thanks for the heads-up on the diehard blog....will check it out right now.

Could you elaborate please? Does "reached out" mean 1) expresssed interest? 2) Made phone calls about it? 3) Formally applied? or 4) Something else?

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

It's taken 32 days so far. It took ADRoby 2 years to get the guts to drop football.

Yeah, and to think, it only took the New Jersey Devils 100 days to find their new head coach. So we have lapped them so far. The idea you need a coach within 2 weeks, especially in the summer when you cant, you know coach, is mind boggling to me.

Have a process, stick to it, and find your guy. One extra week is not going to make a difference in how this team is going to play first round of the Beanpot.

And much like this past season, I will gladly have a sucky October, as long as February and March are fun.

As for the three HokyDad suggestions - enough teams have passed on Cavanaugh, in fact NU did last time, to make me think that he either truly does not want his own program unless its on the Heights, or York has been carrying him as a large piece of luggage that he just does not feel like putting in the trash. Guy has been denied more times the Susan Lucci. If he was that hot, you would think someone would have pulled the trigger by now.

So Olesiak has left, Roby you are doing a great job. Keep up the good work.

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

I really cannot believe how badly he has messed up this program. 90% not renewing my 6 season tickets.

First of all.....Know your facts about how many jobs Cav has actually pursued. Just because his name is mentioned, doesn't mean he really wanted the job. Secondly, he is THE BEST college hockey recruiter in the last 15 years. Whether its the right contacts, actually discovering the talent himself, or knowing what kind of players the team needs at the time, no one has done it better. Go ahead and argue that point. The championships and the current NHL'ers will always prove you wrong. If the response is "yeah but anyone can recruit at BC?" Two things, it wasn't when he started and if you look at some of their best players, he went into areas BC had not traditionally had success recruiting. Gerbe, from Michigan, Kobasew and Kolanos, both from Canada, he's owned New York, etc.

You are so wrong about Cav, but good luck with LaPlante. I give that guy three years before you all are calling for his head.

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

Cav didn't interview with NU so it is a non-issue.

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

Only 90 %, eh? Does that mean that there is only a 1 in 10 chance that you'll support a team that you've rooted for all these years? Go ahead. Don't renew. Just don't keep whining - especially if the team has home ice in the playoffs or you can't get the seats that you're use to having for the Beanpot.
With fans like you, who needs detractors. Go buy season tickets for bu. You can sell off your seats to our games to real fans.

Before you go,you should understand a few things: While I'm certainly not a big Roby fan, he doesn't deserve the blame you have laid at his feet. First of all, Cronin left very late in the hiring season. Most head coaches are either canned at the end of the season or announce their retirement prior to the end. He knew very well what the consequences would probably be. Certainly Cronin was aware that he had either neglected or hadn't insisted on LOIs from several recruits including Mr. Haar, who he personally scouted and recruited two years ago. Was he being vindictive? You'll have to ask him.

He also knew how long it would take to replace him due to the University's Equal Opportunity employment policy. This policy insures that every conceiveable minority has an opportunity to apply for an open position. This takes about a month before the final interviews can take place. We have just finished those interviews. Someone will get an offer on Monday followed by some negotiations, legal reviews etc. WE should we able to announce by Monday 8/1 - roughly 45 days since the resignation. Unil the U. recognizes that Athletics staffing has different requirements and smaller potential applicant pools than most other poisitions at an educational institution, we will continue to require to take at least twice the time that our competitors require to fill coaching postions.

Now how is that Roby's fault? If you say that Cro and Roby didn't get along, You should know that neither man is a candidate for "Mr. Congeniality" when his authority is challenged. The Suspension that Roby laid on Cro and Albie seemed a bit draconian considering the alleged infraction, but apparently Roby was try to protect the U. by getting ahead of the NCAA via a self policing action. I'm sure Cro was angered and embarrassed. However, if he knew that he had done the deed, which he never denied, then who was to blame?

I'm getting very tired of Cronin being cannonized by certain posters for his recruiting skills and "for all that he accomplished" with the Northeastern Hockey Program. It was left to him in dreadful shape. He got the job only after several others had turned their up their noses up it after getting a whiff. He never won a beanpot. He got home ice once and followed up with a 9th place finish. He got to the Garden twice, but never reached the finals and his teams never won a really big game against a higher rated team until they knocked bu out in March, 2011. His "terrific recruits" came here, but they would only run up to the wall for him - they wouldn't run through it. Why do you suppose that was??

It's simply too early to let your season tickets lapse - The applications haven't been sent out yet!

Thats right, I totally forgot. Good recruiter = good coach, good manager, etc. He might be able to do one thing well, but can he do the other pieces? Nobody knows, cause he has not had the chance.

And you do not know a few things about him either, like conversations he has had with other programs that has led them to run away as fast as they can. If he was that excellent, he would be behind a bench by now.

Ayep. Cronin's getting a retroactive legacy makeover.
