Northeastern Huskies 2016 Offseason Thread: Building Momentum

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2016 Offseason Thread: Building Momentum

Kudos to everyone involved with this. It takes a lot of dedication and hard work keeping something like this going but big-boy programs deserve quality independent blogs so thanks for doing your bit.

Look at the bright side, you already have the blog in place so when you get a big-boy hockey program you'll have both together!

Aren't you thoughtful!
With all your studs, you couldn't beat us when it really counted. Now without them, whatcha gonna do?

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2016 Offseason Thread: Building Momentum

Zack Solow (Dubuque) '98.. to NU, per U.S hockey wire.
Should be a very nice pickup. He was a very active role player on an excellent Dubuque team last season. He should develop nicely with another year in Iowa. We need another playmaker, who can also score, in the event that Sikura decides to leave early.

Rumors of a Senior Forward not returning...possibly quitting the sport altogether...none of the Big Three...

If there is any merit to this, we can conclude it's not Stevens/ZAR/Collier. Hedges is returning from injury, so I doubt it's him. Kurker I also cannot see as he plays every game. Reduces possibilities to Pond, Jameison, or Rosenthal- I think the last name is more likely than the first two. But we'll see if anything comes of this "rumor"

Good info GreatSkateMate! However, it is not Pond, Jamieson or Rosenthal.

I was shocked at first and then I wasn't...I've come to also understand that his scholarship will be used among current players and that if his spot is filled it will be with a walk-on...

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2016 Offseason Thread: Building Momentum

No need to fill the spot really, considering our number of forwards and Stevens/Aston-Reese being the only seniors with top six roles. Unfortunate timing, but nothing we haven't faced in August before with Szmatula and Karlsson. Hope it works out well for him.

At the coach's discression, the funds will likely be divided and allotted among veterans with modest scholarships. There are very few full scholarships on the squad and several players with little or no $. They won't be bringing in another freshman and I don't know of any "mystery" walk on who can show up and make the team.

Maybe you would know: When is the last time NU had a walk on make the team, even if only as a practice body? I mean like a guy who had a number and GoNU.com bio. Was Jake Hoeffler a walk on? I remember hearing that rumor early in my time at NU.

There are walk ons and there are "recruited" walk ons. For example, Schecter and Jamieson are walk ons in the sense that they came in without scholarship $. However, it is hard to know whether they were recruited and offered a chance to make the team. Over the years, there have been many players who walked on (one way or the other) and made huge contributions. David O'Brien quickly comes to mind. If a boy plays in the USHL or and of the other top junior leagues, there is a very good chance that at least one of the coaches has seen him play.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2016 Offseason Thread: Building Momentum

I don't want to get into names but there was a quite recent player who became a walk-on after his Freshman year. There was also a recent departee who was given the option of being a walk-on after his Freshman year as well. He departed.

While scholarships are limited to the equivalent of 18 Full-time, there is no de jure limit to how big a D1 MIH roster can be. Huskies had 29 players rostered including red-shirts. It doesn't take a degree in higher math or an understanding of the sport to figure that the top 8 are Fulls or near Fulls and the next 8 probably average 65-75%...NU is an $80K school and other direct school sponsored aid counts against your scholarship total.

In other words, there are more walk-ons on the roster than are *publicized* and it's best to keep the names out of it.

In case you haven't heard, the National Hockey League has signed Cameron Voss as a referee, thereby immediately improving the entire HEA officiating staff.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2016 Offseason Thread: Building Momentum

This might actually be a negative for us. I think he's called one single NU game since the whole Beanpot incident, which means we had previously been free from the league's worst ref.

Point taken but I'll take my chances with young guys like Jamie Koharski and Geoff Miller, who did outstanding work calling the HEA championship game. (Easy to say since NU won.) Add Terry Murphy to that list.

The Beanpot fiasco aside, Voss is nowhere close to being the "worst" IMO. But he seemed to enjoy the spotlight too much for my liking.
