Northeastern Huskies 2016-17 Part II: Postseason Edition

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2016-17 Part II: Postseason Edition

I heard rumors of this the past couple weeks, but his tweet tonight makes it official. Bobby Hampton is heading to NU in the fall.... A year earlier than expected

Does Hampton's acceleration mean another recruit is not signing/being pushed back?

Negative. We had extra money from Barry and Fio transferring, and coaches wanted Hampton to come in and develop under their tutelage against older players rather than in Cedar Rapids. We haven't lost anyone we were suspected to have.

Any word on the impact that Brandon Hawkins will have? Once again this teams fate will be defense and goaltending. Also can this team show up and play at the beginning of the season. I think we are all tired of the slow starts.

I'm a bit bummed that we won't be seeing any B1G or Nacho opponents

With NU not being a marquee school for other teams to schedule, with the uncertainty of how HE would have to revamp its own schedule due to ND leaving, with the short window to fill the gaps....NU isn't the only HE team that will have a less than stellar Home schedule. With no obvious candidate to replace ND, HE teams have to start filling in future schedules now. Of course, they have to have those games 'cancel-able', too, in the event that a School approaches HE about becoming a member. Is it worth considering splitting HE into Divisions somehow?

This is important to know. Things can happen in the scheduling world on short notice, and it's not like teams are going to cancel long-standing agreements to make new ones. It's in bad faith if you do that. So NU adding SH and AIC I imagine is a short term fix to a short term problem. We *did* add 2 HEA games with ND leaving, and the ASU series was pushed back to 2018, so that might have cancelled each other out...but even so, I don't anticipate these AHA teams to be year-in, year-out opponents. If NU went local to try and fill in their gaps quickly, can't really blame them.

I'll bring it up to Jim at the FOH meeting next week.

What you say may indeed help explain why the schedule turned out as it did. We'll just have to see how things play out over the next few years. Just hope that staying local isn't due to cuts in the travel budget. An unintended by-product may well be that any serious Hobey candidates (Gaudette/Sikura?) may be at a disadvantage because of perceived strength of schedule concerns among the voters.

And isn't it ironic that a USNWR top-40 national university isn't considered a marquee opponent in the hockey world.

Brutal schedule, I always try and make one game. I would love to go to RIT, but its also their homecoming weekend. Looks like UMass will be the closest opponent to home.

Unless the NU press release that accompanied the schedule is wrong, the NU-RIT game is at the downtown Blue Cross Arena (capacity 10.7K), not the on-campus rink. So you shouldn't have any problem.

It's funny how long the process of being "marquee" takes. Lowell has been by far the best program in this league the last 5 years and their OOC schedule is Omaha (2), Clarkson, SLU, Bentley, AIC and ASU (2). I'd imagine UNH and Maine have better OOC opponents than that because they're still seen as being more marquee nationally.

Our OOC SOS (fun with letters) should be helped by playing BC and then BU/Harvard in the Beanpot at least.

The costs of flying have gone up this year. Attendance in many venues was down in 2016-17. Perhaps schools like Michigan, which used to pay teams to come play weekend series, have cut back on the practice. We'll learn more at the meeting next Wednesday.
