Northeastern Huskies 2015 Off-Season Thread: Unrequited Love

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2015 Off-Season Thread: Unrequited Love

I think you have to take into account the Steve Blass/Chuck Knobloch factor here. Head cases, for whatever reason, are perceived as uncoachable when it come to changing that mental issue. OC is fine, heck better than above average fine, stopping shots. He has talked about his work on rebounds.
The issue isn't he four ncaa games was giving up a goal each game on gaffes. Puck handling epic gaffes.
That stuff leaves a mark (sorry to say).
If he returns for his sr season I may have him pencilled in as the #3 goalie behind maguire and lacouvee after when at saw the past 3 weeks

If so, that "a better version of Rawlings" comment I made a few years ago is pretty accurate. Rawlings would go full Daniel Bard in the Beanpot final or a HE tournament game while OC waited until the NCAA tournament.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2015 Off-Season Thread: Unrequited Love

Might as well add Michigan Tech to that list. In the same four seasons, Mel Pearson took a perennial bottom feeder to the WCHA championship game and an NCAA bid. I also had to swallow hard every time Albie O'Connell showed up in TV shots of the BU bench. Think some of those high-end freshmen now on lower Comm. Ave. might have turned up on Huntington had Cronin & Co. not been run out of town?

How about including some of the failures? I can't imagine that every non-Madigan hire in that period has been successful.

cmon Craig.. now you sound like an insider @ Roby's office.. we had a chance with Cronin (just look at what/who he was bringing in & how they panned). Then.. we had another chance with the HC vacancy.. we went inside Dodge Hall or whatever.. & hired a guy from fundraising..

c'mon!.. gotta pay some dues in this biz.. college, USHL, ex-NHL.. gotta stay close to the coaching..
NU blew it. Pure & simple. To call it anything else..
I have no words beyond this.

ps: seriously.. some of you (perhaps even me) older fans.. we do it to ourselves! We deserve what we get. Year after year after year..

NU would win the WCHA

Hopefully Williams can step right in and be a force on our blue line next year. He's right-handed, meaning he'll likely take Cockerill's spot assuming JM wants three pairs of lefty-righty. Benning and Saucerman will not be benched.

Jon Barry, the other highly regarded defenseman coming in, is a lefty. I assume he takes Lauwers' spot, joining Darou and Owens. Fennell will likely be relegated to 7th D again.

Playing time will be hard to come by at forward. Could see as many as 15 players getting time next year- Kurker, Cotton, and Gaudette all likely slide into the starting lineup immediately.

As a Co-ROY, Cockerill will most likely have a place in the lineup - even if it is on the left side. As a three year starter and a leading PP scorer, Sauce will also be in the lineup. I've always thought he might make a good checking line RW and PP LW (which is the spot from which he scored a half dozen goals this winter). I realize that this would further tighten up the forward position, but that's OK. If a little competition for ice time is a good thing, a lot of competition might be terrific.

Then there is Fennel, who, IMHO, had improved immensely and had really caught the attention of the coaching staff. Too bad he was shelved for the season with a hand injury

I just can't think of who Cockerill would play over. Darou came on strong in the second half. Owens was one our best defenders by advanced metrics, even though he didn't score a ton. And Barry is a highly regarded recruit, akin to Williams. Unless JM makes 7 d a routine thing, someone is going to be disappointed with playing time.

Indeed! Coming up with such metrics to explain/measure/pontificate upon this and all of life's other vexing mysteries is the reason we're spending megamillions to build a brand new Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Center.

On a semi-serious note building off of your comment, with this ISEC replacing the Columbus Lot combined with Carter Playground eating up the Camden Lot, where will us hockey fans be able to park?

I'm guessing the Columbus Garage will be made available, which entails a bit of a hike. And you could always pay to park in the old taxi garage although I'm told that at some point, it too will be torn down to make room for more new construction. (Hopefully an arena annex of sorts with a practice rink for the two varsity hockey teams and appropriate practice facilities for the hoops programs. Something like this would not only free up time at Matthews but also eliminate the need to make vagabonds out of our teams by busing them to off-campus locations for practice when time at Matthews isn't available.)

Yes, I know this isn't in the Master Plan.

Passing along word from the Friends of NU Hockey, the annual meeting will be held this Tuesday 6/9 in the Team Room in Cabot. No cost to attend but you'll need to register. Can be done here: http://friendsofnuhockey.com/

Hope to see a number of you there. Last year was a very strong turnout, hoping for more of the same this year.
