Not necessarily. This is what we thought in years past with the theory that playing the early game gets you done earlier and back to the hotel to prep, rest, etc. The 8:00 game could start late if the 5:00 runs late and/or could go into OT or something. So we always thought #1 had the choice and we were told HE/TV totally dictates which pairing plays at what time.

NU and BC played at 5pm in 2011, while UNH and Merrimack played at 8pm. I'm guessing for tv ratings and attendance that would have been reversed, so at least in 2011, the #1 seed picked 5pm. Maybe it's changed with NBC coming in.

Nope. In 2009, BU was the #1 seed. I was looking forward to playing the 5pm after many years of having to wait, as either a 2/3 seed, while the first game went to OT, sometimes several. BU/BC should've been the 5pm game that year but NESN moved it to the nightcap and then NU's game went to OT. Of course.

ETA: Hockey East just announced BC/NU is at 8.

What the #1 seed wants doesn't matter, they have no say in what time they play. It is all decided between HE and tv as we found out and were told in the past. Believe me this is what I thought was the case in the past too with the #1 deciding and have been told in no uncertain terms they do not get the choice.

IIRC, in the Beanpot, the defending champion gets their choice of early or late in the opening round.

That makes 2011 pretty strange, I wonder what they were thinking.

Ah well, I'm happy it's at 8pm this year, I'll be more likely to be able to watch the game.

I guess maybe because tv contracts are negotiated before the event, so BC does not profit by playing at 8pm anymore than at 5. Teams who can't make money on home games because of poor attendance should care since maybe next year's contact will be slightly larger

Just fyi , NU will be selling a student ticket block for $10 per ticket at some point this week. I THINK it's just for students and in the upper balcony, just like the Beanpot, but it's probably worth waiting for a day or two to find the official details and whether alums, etc. are included
