Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

...Complain that the call was weak or that it went against the way the game had been played to that point...A trip, a hook or a hit from behind has to be the same penalty in the first period, the third period or overtime; up 3 goals, down a man already - the calls have to stay the same.

That's precisely the point!! The type of contact that was penalized in OT had been going on all through the game by both sides without being penalized. So why was it suddenly a penalty five seconds into OT? The controversy is not about the call so much as it is about consistency (or the sudden lack thereof).

Penalties aside, great game, guys. Now I can see why you're riding the hot streak. This should be a heated weekend.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

Team has had a nice run after a terrible start so they are capable of overcoming setback & have surprised many (including myself) in a positive way.
These kinds of experiences build character. On to the wknd!..

Get it together again (like you are capable & showed last night in the 3rd). Hopefully be back at the Garden. Reset.. regroup..
Go Huskies! :-)

And that's why I said the consistency is the part that should be questioned, not the timing. Far too many people are focused on the fact that it was made in OT, which by itself should never be a point of contention.

Wrong.

Complain that the call was weak or that it went against the way the game had been played to that point. Those points are legitimate. The timing of a call is NEVER an excuse. Look, as fans of Hockey East we can't ***** and moan that we want more consistent officiating, and then complain that the whistles aren't being put away in overtime. A trip, a hook or a hit from behind has to be the same penalty in the first period, the third period or overtime; up 3 goals, down a man already - the calls have to stay the same.

It wasn't a penalty.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

They've gotten quite a bit better the past few years. I'd heard they were a volunteer operation for quite some time and it's tough to keep kids from leaving the band after the ninth home loss of the season, but the turnout has been very good this year I'd say.

Not sure when break starts but I hope the local students and the co-op kids find time to make it to the arena this weekend (and next, if necessary)

Our break doesn't start for two weeks. And we've been that loud and big all year. We've been getting bigger and better each year and just a few years back we were only student run. There will be just as great a band on Saturday as there was at the Garden. I can't speak for the fans, but the band doesn't take breaks. Regardless of the record, it's our job to support the team and the students and we're going to do just that. The band during the opening round of the HEA playoffs will be noticeably smaller because many students will be traveling for basketball, but there will still be one.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

I hope those students all show up Saturday and make sure Matthews is rocking. If not, shame on them.

I'm sure they will. BU games always get NU fired up, plus the game isn't during spring break this year. That and we really do have the best fans. They showed up all fall, even during the dark days of the 0-8-1 record. Even more of a reason to keep going now. Season is far from over.

good, glad the break isn't until after this weekend. I want a packed barn for bu on Saturday.

Not really. There have been quite a few instances where senior night fell during spring break over the past few years and student support was poor. I always hated seeing that we'd get bu or bc when the students were on break.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

It was, but it should never have been. It wasn't NU's idea to play with just 4 skaters. They would have preferred to use 6 or 7.:D

Remember the time in the Peepot against BC when Roy just jumped off the bench in the middle of the game and got a breakaway as the 6th NU skater? Should have tried that again last night, God knows the refs this league employs still can't count to 6.

I literally just said I think we will this year BECAUSE the games are NOT during spring break. I was there last year and attendance was not great because of Spring Break. It will be this year though, because the schedule works out so that the games are NOT during spring break. Which is what I said.

I think the reason people are p issing and moaning and b itching about the call is the fact that it was in OT but it would not have been called in regulation. People are complaining about the consistency, just in a round about way.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

It wasn't a penalty.

After watching that play on NESN a number of times, I think the ref was really punishing NU for Saucerman's hook on Eichel just before the whistle on Benning. Eichel blew by Sauce (as he had all game) and Sauce stuck his stick under Eichel's arm and started yanking, which could have been called a hook. Then, when Benning did what he did, which would normally not be called a penalty in OT, the ref felt the need to raise his arm. In other words, I believe he was thinking to himself "I let you get away with the Eichel hook, because it's OT and we haven't been calling that all game, but I can't allow a borderline hook twice in a three-second span," so he raised his arm for Benning. The Sauce hook on Eichel was definitely worse than what Benning did. Benning's play may have been technically illegal, but it was mostly just good defense by a Dman protecting the net. Sauce's play was a lazy reach by a guy who wasn't moving his feet all game. Still, a great comeback and a great game by NU, but with the usual bittersweet ending.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

Entertaining game that is a snapshot of what this years team is about. They can give profoundly bad goals, put themselves in a tough spot and still rebound. They play Trick or Treat defense, but don't let the bad moments stop them. (The epitome of this is Colton Saucerman. On ice for three goals against last night. Poor support on BU's first goal when Owens failed to keep the puck in at the point. Horrible screens on both of Grzelcyk's goals.) Haven't seen video of the OT penalty call. Did Benning lift the stick or slash O'Regan's hands and arms?

If they gave a Beanpot for best band, you guys/gals win in a rout. Not even close. Keep up the great work.
