Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

Heckuva weekend and a really great stretch. Tough to really know where we are HE standing-wise with all the games in hand, but we should know more after this weekend. It certainly feels like we've been here before: playing our best hockey in December and January and seemingly primed to make a run. Here's hoping that this year will be different and we can continue on this roll. It's really too bad we coughed up that UMASS game at home early in the season or we could start to be in the PWR discussion.

That game was the poster child for lost opportunity. I foam at the mouth every time I think of it.

I'm echoing several others here, but credit to the players and coaches for continuing to plug away and believe in themselves after that horrible start. Things turned around, the defense got better and the shots started going in, and they looked like the team people thought they could be. I can't think of a better time to be trending this positively.

(This kind of enthusiasm and sunny outlook feels awkward for a Northeastern fan....)

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

I think it kind of stinks we don't have a game this Friday personally. Too much time off until the first round of the beanpot.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

Only semi-Beanpot related, I fully expect to lose the mid-Beanpot trap game in the zoo on Friday. It's an easy game to overlook and we've done it before, plus they were semi-decent against Merrimack.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

..we've had gms Fridays in past yrs.. it hasn't helped.
Maybe this will..
;)

Playing the Friday before has not been an issue. They have been in the finals the last two years? I am not a fan of all this time off either.

I can't ever remember having no game on the Friday preceding the Beanpot. Hopefully the extra rest will help the team and allow Rosenthal, Reid and Fennell to heal. Also Saucerman didn't look too well after the cheap shot he took as game two ended. It would be helpful to have everyone healthy for BC.

Fair point. Let's remember that for the ND sweep and at least parts of the BC series, they were playing without Rosenthal, Reid, and Fennell, which makes the recent run all the more impressive. But I wouldn't want to go against BC without all hands on deck. To the extent that a weekend off helps make that happen, I'm all for it.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

I would not be surprised to see Derick Roy in net on Monday night against BC. Clay is a terrific D-1 goalie, as is Derick but they have both played well enough to get the start. I agree both Rosenthal and Reid are difference makers that we need at as close to 100% for the Beanpot.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

What does it say about how the team is playing and what others think of it when a team 1 game under has 7 votes in the national top 20 poll this week.

It's nice, but it won't score goals on Monday night. These voters base their choices on who is playing well NOW. The NC$$ selection committee, OTOH, bases its choices on the overall season. Even if we were to win every game except for the HEA final, we have virtually no chance for the national tournament, because we didn't begin to exist as a team until mid November:(

It says nothing. There are only 59 D1 teams, so the field for "also receiving votes" is only 39. While it's flattering to receive seven votes after the catastrophic start, the only thing that truly matters is the Pairwise, which remains an uphill climb.

Still, all due credit to JM & Co. for what has been accomplished over the past two months.

I'd actually be surprised to see this. Clay may not be playing at the 2013-14 level we saw, but he has shown he has the capability to steal a game. I have yet to see that from Derick, even though I think he has the ability to do it. Because of that, plus his Beanpot experience, I expect Witt in net on Monday.

The extra day off I believe will help. Extra prep for BC's attack, extra time to rest up and recover from injuries, plus BC has to deal with PC, so they will be playing on a short week- feeling the effects of injury, performance, less prep time. They won't look past PC, with 2 points on the line. This may play to NU's advantage.

Hockey talk- what do y'all think of the 11 F, 7 D lineup we've been using? I personally have liked it quite a bit. More ice time for KRoy, Murchy, etc, keeps our blue line fresh with more guys rotating in. In addition some guys have been playing quite well- DD, Fennell, Benning, Dax all have impressed. Sauce is what he is, good as a RW, rough on the edges as a RD. JM is revolutionizing the game!!

I realize that the rankings mean nothing and that the pairwise is all that matters, but still 7 people have noticed and say that regardless of record they belong in top 20. Means nothing, just don't see it often with team under .500 get votes.

I was just checking heisenberg page and I feel like there is someone missing from the list? I feel like there was someone in between Cotton and Grifffen. Has there been a decommit?

I think whoever is playing better in net at practice heading up to Monday night will get the start. Clay is excellent, however Derick has shown he can step in and beat some of the best. Normally, whoever plays the first Beanpot game, also plays the second one (Eberly Award goes to goalie with best save percentage who must play in both games - doesn't always go to the Beanpot winning goalie). NU's first Beanpot win in 1980, NU goalie George Demetrolakis also won the Eberly with a .816 sv% and a 4.50 GAA. (All stats go out the window when trying to win this tournament).

I think the coaching staff will do and dress whoever will help them win. Most importantly, this team is built for playing a 5 on 5 puck possession game.

Maybe more than any other team i have seen this year, so much credit for the turnaround needs to go to guys who don't show up on the score sheet. Yes, we have a ton of skill, but when we are getting in on the forecheck, playing hard on top of pucks, NU is tough to play against. Benning and Lauwers are playing with a lot of poise, which helps a lot.

Don't give up on the pairwise just yet. Much is out of NU's control at this point, which is a real shame. They are playing really well right now with something to prove.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2014-15: Release the Hounds!

If you really think about it, this NU Husky Men's team is much better than their sub .500 record. What you say rings true, it's not often you see a sub .500 team get votes in the polls. They have found a way to turn things around in a big way.
