Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Well, it didn't look great for HE with Maine, BU and UML all bowing out in the 2nd round but hat's off to Ferris State and Union for their 1st trip into the Final 4. On a brighter note, I wanted to mention Providence signed Will Gosss of Wellesley a 6 foot 5 inch D man who went 5 32 37 in 35 games up at Philips Exeter. I have watched him play since he was 6 on our town teams and saw him play 3 years at Wellesley with my older son, now 19. William will be a 20 Year old freshman, with no Jr exp. and was kind of under the radar for a few years. He transferred to PHIL - E and did and additional PG year after his Jr. year at Wellesley and was a jr. captain of the Wellesley team that made the state tournament for all 3 years that he played. Although he had now real significant point production on those teams but could power a hard shot from center ice with some level of accuracy, but was often beat back by fast skaters thru the nuetral zone. NOT ANYMORE! However, if you had asked me when he left if he was DIV 1 caliber I would have said no. He also now skates with my younger freshman son, on the Wellesley Varsity as a coach from time to time when home form Phillips Exeter on vacations and during the Spring Europa Cup. I have to say I have never seen more improvement in 2 years in any player after the of 18 than I have witnessed in this young man. Fast, big, strong and smart, we are going to be in trouble. However dont get me wrong, I am still rooting against him and PC going forward and who knows how far he can go. He is a force and still growing! It's just nice to see hard work pay off a feel good story as you just dont find kids like this in public school at 11th grade anymore!

You're onto something here. Remember that the Union team now on its way to Tampa was put together by Nate Leaman. From what I could see on TV, many of those guys were huge, so it would appear that Nate likes 'em big. The 6-5 Wellesley kid just might be a sign of what PC might look like in a couple of years.

Was playing at an open stick practice a few weeks ago with a kid that is also going there in 2013. I asked him how tall he was and he told me 6'3" and 200 lbs. Said he hoped to be 220 in college. Another D-Man.

As for Union, their players commit to 6am workouts, five days a week in the off-season. Kudos to them as that's probably the type of commitment it takes to make the Frozen Four when nobody on your team was considered good enough to be drafted during their draft year. Certainly being drafted can be a crap shoot as you get toward the end rounds but still quite a sign of leadership and commitment on that team.

Bitetto officially has signed with Nashville. Has anyone learned anything from Jake Newton?

CC to Thiessen'sBetter. Could you please drop Jake Hansen and Johnny Gaudreau from your Fantasy College Hockey team so I can poach them?
Thanks

If true, this is not good news for the NU program at all ...
Husky Hockey ‏ @HuskyHockeyBlog
Jon Gillies has been released from his NLI and will not be attending NU next season.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Sorry to hear about Gillies.
This is what Nathan Fournier is reporting:
"Gillies is 50-50 on whether he will go the QMJHL route. He hasn't talked to any other schools. Gillies said it was a mutual decision with Chris Rawling returning for his senior season"

really? not like it'd be terribly hard to steal the spot from rawlings based on his performance this year.

Kinda sounds like when Tim Thomas chose not to come to Lowell because Roloson was returning for his senior year, way back when. But Thomas wasn't as highly rated as Gillies.

And Rawlings isn't Roloson.

-1 for Madigan. I've been directing a lot of my disgust for the program lately towards Roby, because his poor decision making is what led the program into its current status. However, this one is ALL on Madigan.

Correct course of action: assure this kid that Rawlings coming back has no effect on his status, as he is CLEARLY the option for this team's future, and DON'T let him out of his NLI. From my understanding, schools are under no obligation to let a kid out of his NLI, and to hear that there was no fuss made whatsoever is a bit of a concern.

So to sum it up, Madigan has no control over his team or any real knowledge of how to manage a program, and Rawlings is back to **** with us again next year. I will not be renewing my season tickets this year.

Man...that is a huge blow to NU...sorry guys...I've heard a lot of great things about him...with Cannata gone, we could always use a top shelf 'tender right now ;) LOL

Gillies will head to Quebec or BU.

maybe i'm unsure of the verbage. but asking out of his LOI seems to suggest he wants to play for another school in HE. i would imagine the LOI is worthless and unenforcable if he just up and left for canada?

I believe he's considering other schools an option, along with the Q

Like OnionMan said, I wouldn't be shocked if he headed down the street.

From my understanding, schools are under no obligation to let a kid out of his NLI, and to hear that there was no fuss made whatsoever is a bit of a concern.

Generally speaking, a program refusing to release a kid from his NLOI is bad policy and hurts everyone involved. At best, the schools gets to enforce their part of the agreement and gets to "show the kid who is boss". At worst, the school/coaching staff gets a reputation for not handling kids well and word will get out on this situation (we have no idea if the staff didn't keep any promises to the kid either, like we saw from the Vecchione situation). You may have recruits that have interest or are verballed but are more hesitant to sign on the dotted line when the time comes to sign a NLOI next time around. For a player being denied release from the NLOI, if he shows up he is likely in a place he doesn't want to be and could end up being miserable there... He could end up ditching on you midseason and the school eats that scholarship and now you're playing with less than a full set of scholarship players for the remainder of the season. You deny him the chance to get an education elsewhere by not letting him out of his NLOI and if he shows up and has to transfer to do so you're making him sit out a year. And the kid can just go head to Canada (bad for college hockey on the whole) and no NLOI can prevent that from happening.

So I don't think asking for Madigan to be fired over this (or even blaming him) is a good conclusion to make. But everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

..oh no. Not-good-at-all..

NU Hockey.. best option.. join the ECAC.. make Madigan the AD.. bring Cronin back as Head Coach.
NU fans.. our wishful thinking continues..
School's in great shape.. the hockey program.. can't say.
