Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Very pleased that this team was able to rally tonight for the tie. Again, the Hockey East refs were marginal, at best, on both sides. Really liked to see Jim Madigan energized on the bench. You could see that he wanted this game, he was all over the place. Also, he had a talk with the linesman/refs after the game which I also like and think is a good idea. Wish we could have had a win tonight, but I'll take it. Doghouse was alright, they need to cheer more, not just when we have a scoring chance or get a goal, like UNH & BC fans. The Doghouse guys in the past pride themselves on cheering/yelling till the end. Front row guys should not leave the arena with a voice. Looking forward to the next home game.

I wouldn't be too concerned. At NU, many students had gone off campus for the holiday weekend. The fact that the evening was the start of Yom Kippur kept a number of fans away, including me and my guests.

Up in Maine, there is a great deal of dissatisfaction with the coaching of "Timmay" which may have kept the crowd down. As for Minnesota: I don't know about you, but I wouldn't pay $25 (last year's tarrif) for a seat to watch Sacred Heart act as cannon fodder for the gophers - even if it wasn't Yom Kippur.;)

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Pro: They didn't give up, pushed hard at the end, and dominated that last 10 minutes. One of the wildest ends I've seen in a long time.
J. Daniels, Saponari, and the forwards looked real good in general

Con: The defense was bad. Took tons of penalties, and didn't seem to know what they were doing a lot, they let that 2nd goal in, didn't even block the shooter.
Also, they didn't keep someone in front of the net a ton. Sometimes they did, but it seemed a lot of the time our guy behind the net had to bring it around himself, and Boyle could easily cover the puck up.

In short- some good things, can't wait to see them with Quailer, Ferriero and Karlsson back and as they improve defensively.

..because (at last count).. he's had least 2 assists (and counting) in BC's win over NoDak tonight. Last score i saw was 4-2 in the 3rd... he was (is) special, we knew all along. Good for you guys..

Gaudreau goal, 3 point night so far.

Speaking of former Northeastern commitments, Ryan Johansen is on the Blue Jackets roster one year after his draft year.

You almost become numb to it all after a while...

You're right about the "almost" part!

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Some thoughts from the game last night:

-Good start, terrible middle, good ending. I don't know what was happening in the 2nd period, but it did not look good at all. Then we turned it around and completely dominated the second half of the 3rd period. We were consistently crashing the net and generating numerous opportunities. Gotta show up for a full 60 minutes in order to get any points against Maine.

-J.Daniels continued to look much improved over last year. Two goals from an area of the ice where we had trouble getting consistent production last season. (In fact all 3 of the goals came from very close range/second chance opportunities)

-The 39-18-91 line continues to disappoint. I don't think they managed to hold an offensive possession for a whole shift all game. There just isn't anyone big enough on that line to consistently win battles along the boards. Though Dongara definitely looks stronger and more physical than I remember him being last year, he is still not big enough to consistently win battles along the boards. I would love to see Tuckerman switch with Vrolyk on that line.

-Overall, I thought the Bitetto-Eibler pairing disappointed. Sure they made some good plays, but I caught both of them just gliding around in our defensive zone on numerous occasions instead of hustling, and it cost us several possessions or chances to clear. In addition, Eibler picked up 2 penalties. We need to get a better performance from our top defensive paring.

-I know Adam Reid was in the lineup, but he didn't seem to play much. In fact I don't recall seeing much use of the fourth line (Stone-Morra-Reid I believe) at all. I saw Stone fill in on another line during a penalty, but that might have been it. Madigan very heavily leaned on the top two lines, with the third line seeing a little time as well. This makes me want Quailer, Ferreiro and Karlsson in the lineup even more. With them in there I think we can roll out three good lines and be a fairly deep team. Without them, we appear to be pretty thin.

-I would love to be able to get some points in the Alfond like Merrimack did last night, and if we take what we did in the third period last night and turn that into a full game we have a chance of doing so.

Maine's good but beatable. Let's do it. And stop talking about Gaudreau sheesh. As annoying as Patriots fans whining over SB 42. It is what it is. Are Quailer and Ferreiro back today?

Had no idea he even considered colleges or that he gave a commitment to NU...interesting.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Guys you likely won’t see the hanful's of blue chip commitments to NU, like you did with Cronin who had a small pipe line as a coach with prior college and AHL exp. Madigan was a scout part time, but let’s face it he really has been working for the University for 25 years most recently as Dir. of the physical plant and later as some sort of administrative Dean in the School of Business Admin. So we will see, what that amounts too. Now for the real news, I know it’s early, but I watched the Maine game on the Live stream and bottom line, we are going to have a rough time playing the metal of the league this year, w/o big improvements. However, they will at times be fun to watch, so we should enjoy that, but clearly this is a rebuilding year and 10 wins will be a challenge. Just being realistic. I think we should just hope they can make the HET. Although, I will add, that this team will surprise at times, and should be pretty fun to watch, but we are not going to be beating BC or BU this year unless we get some luck like if Chris stands on his head. If we can finish 6th or 7th, that will be a big accomplishment. Just got my NH tix. So will do my best to cheer them on regardless, but BC kicked the crap out of SD today and well, you can all do the math.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Well, its welcome to HockeyEast (on the road) for Coach Madigan. With full roster back soon, hopefully we'll compete better. We gotta try put pressure on UNH early. If we can swing it.. we'll be 1-1-1 in HE play in the first 7 days of hockey.. not all bad with new staff & all. We'll see.

BTW, Rossi.. when did SD get hockey :)
