Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

These are not rumors, they are true. CF out for the season with both ACL and meniscus tear. Not sure if he is back for the start of next season. I think they say a year now so I figure January or December of next season to b safe. SQ is out 3 weeks, but that is the season I think it's the same knee that he had done 2.5 years ago, so I guess and hope that they just sit him and have him come back in October. No need to risk a NHL career on a .500 team. In 3 weeks our season may be over anyway. This team is not getting a bid to the tournament as they have lots of holes and really need to win out to be considered, so, it is what it is. However they got 2 points tonight. Nice job! I am only hoping to make the HE tournament and that will even be a challenge. We simply don’t have the depth to beat BU this year but who knows for sure, other guys will need to step it up for sure...but why risk Quailer, who really is playing his best hockey since his Freshman campaign and looking like a future Montreal Canadian. I say let him take the rest of the season off.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Well 2 very bad rumors swirling around pregame tonight. Reports of season ending knee surgery for Ferriero and Quailer out for 3 weeks with ACL/MCL sprain. Still speculation as of now but both out for tonight.

Definitely not good developments. Quailer had previously torn his ACL and missed a year, it would be surprising to see him again this year if its and ACL injury in the same leg (even if its just a sprain). If its even a torn MCL you are looking at 4-6wks max so hope for the best. Ferriero having surgery would indicate ACL / meniscus damage and that could actually mean the start to his season next year could get pushed back because of the length of the rehab. Whats with all the knee injuries? I cant remember anything knee on knee like we saw with Quailer the first time around in that exhibition a few years ago.

Anyway a real Jekyll and Hyde game tonight from NU. They will play great lose a little momentum and suddenly you have all 5 players collapsing inside the slot giving UMass tons of open ice. It just seems like we are a little too apt to scramble, not a good characteristic when we go up against teams like BU who love the back door plays and cross ice passes. Young team, still learning how to play team defense in a lot of ways. Next year looks promising, as it always does, until we lose Karlsson, Rawlings, and a recruit or two (I hope im wrong)

I am only hoping to make the HE tournament and that will even be a challenge.

It will be a huge disappointment if we don't make the HE tournament. Even without Ferriero and Quailer, they are the 6th or 7th most talented team in HE.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

until we lose Karlsson
After seeing Reid and Newton leave I wouldn't be surprised but the NU coaching staff really needs to reference foreign players Nyquist (3 years) and Da Costa (2 years), both of whom were much more accomplished players than Karlsson.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

If not for bad luck, this team wouldn't have any luck at all, or so it seems. Time for a collective gut check.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Thanks team (especially #74) for the 'W' tonight.. we needed a big OT one of these wknds.

Tough tough news on Ferriero & Quailer. I wish them both well and a safe & full recovery. Especially CF after the kind of wknd he had against UVM.. just real bad luck. Rob Dongara..if he can get his passing game going (and i believe he can).. can help the team down the stretch, but he needs to play unselfish hockey. Someone else needs to step up & step in.. we have a good bunch - this is a great opportunity for the guys.

Onward to the Beanpot.. let's go have fun at the Garden!
3 in a row.. keep the attitude..
Go Huskies :)

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

BTW, loved the band (enhanced band :)) in Sec 15 tonight. Is this a permanent move? It worked out (sounded) real good..
Also, question.. why did we have our away jerseys on tonight? To break the OT curse of course :) No seriously..why?.. just curious.

I hope he stays but its just a lot harder to convince players to stay a few years in a program that isnt a perennial contender. Having said that, this team will have a great opportunity to be a top team in the HE next year if they return a majority of their talent. 3 years with Karlsson would make me happy. In terms of development he may decide taking a paycheck and getting into an organization is a better move for his hockey future. It is really beneficial to play NCAA for at least 2 years unless you are really unable to balance being a student athlete. Hell even JVR stayed a couple years. No offense to Karlsson but you really have to be an elite talent to justify jumping ship to the professional ranks.

The offense will be there next season, the team will know the system and have a good sense of team chemistry. I think a lot comes down to goal tending. For all of his shortcomings, Rawlings has played well and given us a chance to win most games this year. A veteran presence in net next year will really solidify this team. If not, well I just hope Gillies decides to fulfill his commitment. I would expect a timeshare with him and Witt, but in the near future Rawlings >>>>> Gillies / Witt.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Regarding Karlsson, you guys have missed one very big point. DaCosta started at MC at 19. Same with Nyquist and JVR was 18 at UNH. I believe Karlsson just turned 21. Unless he really wants a degree from an american university, I'm not sure why he should stay if someone offers him a nice signing package and high level professional coaching. He has an NHL ready shot and the size to play in the league already. Wouldn't be surprised if he goes the same way Reid did. By the way, Reid has better numbers in the "A" then both McNeely and Macleod. Newton probably should have stayed in school.

I'd like to see Sap, Pimm, Karlsson on the first line for now.

When did Cody get injured? Practice??

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

When did Cody get injured? Practice??

I saw him take a hard hit and struggle to get back up toward the end of the third period last saturday night at UVM. He didn't look right, but was back on the ice for shiftss later in the game and scored thed EN goal that sealed the win. He then picked up a 10 minute misconduct for some kind of celebrating or taunting which appeared to be minimal.

That was a very costly win.:(

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

OMG, did they look really bad tonight or what? It was embarrassing. I saw the CFO of EMC leave in the middle of the 2nd period followed by the founder of DeWolfe Real Estate and then before I knew it I was alone in a 20k box staring at tray of hot dogs and varied condiments. Without Cody and SQ, I now have my doubts that we will make the HE tourney. However, again in a big game Rawlings looks like a bad DIV 3 goalie that should be starting at Babson. It’s really too bad, because he is perhaps the best goalie in HE stand up dead on but let's face it he playing laterally he is more like your kid brother playing mini knee hockey in your basement on a shag carpet. He just is so fing bad left to right that it’s going to keep him out of the NHL. I know I always get attitude from you all when I bring it up, but it’s the truth. Also, mistakes by Eblier and Manson tonight too much to overcome. I am not making any excuses but Jim should have gone with 3 lines tonight, not 4, and thus we are nearing a quarter century of utter futility in perhaps the worst NU showing in 20 years, they were embarrassing to watch I finally left as well midway through the 2nd intermission. Also, again true blue NU fans have to judge a season by the 6 to 8 games a season we will play BU and BC, for most of us, a season is defined by our performance against these 2 teams a season at 6 and 27 would be fine if those 6 winds came against the Maroon and Gold and the Terriers. Who has been the worst starting goalie statistically against those 2 teams in the history of NU? you could argue easily Chris Rawlings, as we are 0 and 5 to this point and will likly go 0 and 7 this season. He is just not a big game goalie and he never will be. I did grab 2 hot dogs for the road. However, I think we are cooked and looking at the draft of incoming freshman signings over the next two seasons you are all fooling yourselves if you think we are going to improve. Unless Jim can figure out a way to recruit from the Scandinavian and Eastern Block we are done. Mid level Americans and Junior B level Canadians are not going to beat BC, BU and Notre Dame. I say find a scout who speaks Russian and go find some kids playing pond hockey in Siberia and start sending them NU Jerseys and pucks when they are mites.

I love the strategy. Lulled BC into a false sense of security spotting them a four goal lead. Very clever! Now it's time to spring the trap!

LOL.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Excellent forechecking & passing by the Eagles. The last several times we've played 'em.. one thing that stood out was intensity by both teams. Win or lose, they were fun games & the Huskies gave the Eagles fits until the very end.. that is hockey.. college or otherwise. Great gms to watch.

Not tonight - our team did not have any intensity nor hustle. Of course with 2 strong forwards going down in the same week last wk, the team is not the same.. still, an embarrassing performance by our goalie & team in general. Came out flat & stayed flat.

Congrats to BC for jumping on any & every opportunity tonight.. we were down & they seized it. Much like our 6-1 win in the 2009 Beanpot over the Eagles.. they made us pay.. just the way it goes at times.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Think about this if Vinny had not gotten bounced from BU and wound up at his 3rd choice and Cody had not taken advise from big brother Ben to not play at he Heights, where would we be? In last place. Think about it. Umass Lowell and Merricmak are now getting better players than us..We are so screwed.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

and Cody had not taken advise from big brother Ben to not play at he Heights

Very curious about this. What negatives would Benn have to say about his experience at BC?

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Rawlings flopped so bad tonight...how embarrassing on the biggest stage of the season. The first two goals were so soft and that set the tone. The 5-hole goal...what was that going, like 2mph at the net? C'mon Man! What's up with your boy Rossi!? Madigan should have yanked him way earlier...you could clearly see he didn't bring it tonight.

The NU PP is so pathetic...BC put on a total passing clinic during their PP and NU allows 2 shorties. Would've been 3 if Whitney didn't whiff on the wide open net he had on the breakaway.

Gaudreau must be wondering what the hell he was thinking committing to NU in the first place. Clearly he made a good decision getting away from the disaster that is Northeastern.

I'm just so disgusted right now that this is how the team represented the University on the biggest stage of the season.

Rawlings is not a big game goalie and never will be. Completely killed any chance we had tonight. He was not helped by his defense at all so not 100% to blame but the fact is, all three goals BC scored to start were terrible. Absolutely terrible. All but the 4th goal he let in were pathetic.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

So much just went all wrong tonight. This team is undermanned and outgunned right now. Bad Rawlings showed up again tonight, for at least the second game in a row. Fundamental hockey principles are incredibly complex for the Huskies right now. If a mental mistake can't be made, then a physical one will be committed. Anthony Bitetto is a solid defenseman, but he is not one when he tries to be Phil Housley II. Saponari, Pimm and Karlsson can't play all night and the rest of the forwards just aren't up to the task. If there were a Draft in College Hockey, I'd be in favor of tanking for the high pick. If this team makes the playoffs, what awaits it? A two game dismantling by the number one or two seed? How did it get this bad, this quickly?
