Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

I got a bad feeling about tonight. The last time they played on national TV (at BC), the defense was exposed. Hope I'm wrong and they come to play tonight. Rooting for Pimm and Witt to show the whole country how special they are.

1. It was the first HEA game of the year

2. They gave up 3 goals, the last was an EN, they lost a one-goal game..hardly call that exposed.

Way to go, Witt & co. !

ND.. stop gooning it up.. you've got a decent team with very good skaters. Stay classy. Tomorrow night might be a closer gm.

Well.. nice going team!

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Big road win. Witt continues to impress and it's nice to get scoring from the bottom 6.

Witt was rarely tested, but he looked very sharp. He seemed to be on top of everything, so on the occasions when the Irish did have a chance, there wasn't a whole lot to shoot at.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Great team defense, opportunistic scoring from the third line, disciplined play, the rock of the team in net, and 2 big HE points- couldn't ask for a much better night for NU. To point out one player, Benning has played noticeably better in recent games, he has really stepped his game up on the defensive side.

Excited about tomorrow- adjust, refocus, and go for the sweep. Go NU

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Nice job Huskies, of the 17 loses ND has in the Irish Family Arena, 4 are against NU. The announcers talked a great deal about shots totals but although it seems NU gives up lots of them, I don't see many as quality shots. Witt looked great, and there was a glove save, in heavy traffic at he top left of the crease to preserve the shut out with like 3 minutes left that would have made you think the puck was an iron billet and his glove was and electro magnet. D looked pretty good too, and Manson was physical without being stupid and the team that leads the nation in penalties played fairly controlled on the road. On several occasions with lead when ND tried to draw NU players into matching they just skated away. I have to agree NU_Husky, Benning played his best game of the season. Feeling like scoring can come from just about anyone now. It's going to be tough tonight to try and beat them 2 consecutive nights in their house to go 5 and 0 in that building. Hoping for at least a point, but with a 5 pairwise I am ok with a split on the road against #15. Keep up the good work boys another 5 weeks of this and you might punch a ticket to the tournament.

Completely agree with everything you said. Benning really stepped up and was the best D-man on the ice for either team. Also, Hedges made pinpoint passes from behind the net on two of the goals. He was great. If the announcers had done their homework, they would have known that NU is outshot by a wide margin in almost all of their games, including their wins, so that was an irrelevant stat. Anybody who watched the game could see that this was total domination by the Huskies. I didn't see who the three stars of the game were. With ND being ND, I wonder if they had the gall to give one of the stars to an ND player (when they lost to the Huskies in the Shillelagh Tourney, they still managed to vote an ND player the MOP and to give three of the other five spots on the All-Tourney Team to ND players).

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

The stars were 1) Witt; 2) Reid; 3) McMurtry. I've actually been pretty impressed by the graciousness of the ND people. None of the Comm. Ave. attitude.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Wow...really couldn't be happier with the outcome. Our guys looked a little lost in the first several minutes of the 1st period. After that, we dominated. Witt again was stellar, there were probably 3-4 really good saves from what I could tell. His positioning is really good, night and day from what Rawlings was giving us. Even when screened, he has his pads in the right spot and is kicking the puck to the corners or sucking it up and not allowing rebounds. Another observation is that when we're on a rush instead of always trying to make that centering pass our guys are driving to the net and shooting, top shelf many times which has resulted in several goals. In the past, teams knew that we wouldn't take that shot and the D was cheating towards the man skating down the middle waiting for that pass. Again, great team effort, keep up the good work!! Let's get another 2 points tonight.

There was no tomfoolery like we constantly had with the previous goaltender who won't be named. And man is Witt fast post to post. So quick. He now leads the nation with a .945 save percentage. Guy has been team MVP and a Hobey Baker/HEA Player of the Year candidate this season.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

It's been impressive what they've been able to do recently with Roy only having 1 goal in his last 8 games and no Cody. That shows how deep the scoring has been and how fantastic the goaltending has been. It was pretty awful how much the announcers were talking about SOG, anyone who knows hockey could tell NU was the better team last night.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Stat of the day from last night: The same five players from the Huskies were on the ice for all three even strength goals. They were the third line of forwards and the third line of defensemen. All five were plus 3 on the night. I guess 3 was the lucky number last night.

Nice comeback by the Irish.

Well, when you have a young team that has overachieved all season.. can't complain too much about gm like this. We had some chances. Watch the game film.. make adjustments.. continue to try improve. This split is fine by me, especially after we've played them 3 times this season & taken 2 of 3.
Nice to see the D keep em off the scoreboard most of last 2 periods tonight as well. D seems to have found something.. now offense needs to find its groove..
Onward..

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

MUCH faster paced game today. I agree with northeastern, I felt the D actually played well this weekend, especially compared to where they've come from. Definitely have improved. Pimm and Roy have been very quiet the last few games. Kevin hasn't potted one since the UMass game. I loved the depth scoring last night, but the big guns need to show up consistently if we are going to keep moving forward.

Biggest concern for me after this weekend is the Powerplay. Good lord does it look terrible...of our 6 times tonight, I thought we had one good PP. Last night we had 1 goal, but other than that, nothing. Plus a short-handed goal given up tonight. Keefe needs to come up with something, because it's looking like the same thing every time. He needs to change something and get the PP rolling again. Foley has done a real nice job shoring up the PK unit I think. Sure a PPG against tonight, but they've been solid lately- at least one of the assistants is getting results.

I'm happy with the 2 points, definitely an accomplishment. Little over a week to prepare for Harvard, should be a good one. Got my tickets today, can't wait for Feb 3

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

..no kidding. Roy.. last night on the PP.. again tonight.. skates into slot.. D in front of him is split.. he's in the slot mind you.. he does not take the shot.. he's already making a pass to the side.. (robot like) on a pre-practiced PP play. See what the other team gives you Kevin..take the shot! .. remember what Gretzky said.. :)

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

See what the other team gives you Kevin..take the shot!

I literally screamed this at my TV at least 3 times tonight. I can understand the "Get good looks" philosophy, but he has the best shot on the team! He needs to use it!!

And another shorthanded goal that went in a second late at the end of the second period (rightly didn't count, but still reflects on NU's PP), and a couple of really good shorthanded looks for ND late.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

The Powerplay and the Penalty Kill were both messes this weekend. ND should have had at least one goal on the PP Friday night but Heer missed an open net. They were able to move the puck at will on the PP, if they could shoot straight, the game Friday would have been closer. They had no such issues last night. Against skilled teams up front, NU cannot handle them on either of the Special Teams.

Good game Friday night, Notre Dame was at a different level Saturday night. If anything, I thought both games were the exact same. One team dominating from start to finish, the other team there, but never really threatening.

The problem with Roy on the PP is its not Roy, its the team around him. He is the only guy who can shoot, and he is the only guy who can pass. Saucerman was a mess with the puck last night, at one point Roy could have made an easy pass to him coming out of the zone, chose to go across the ice instead. So if Roy has to carry the puck in, and set guys up, he cannot get a shot. And yeah, he has been not making the best decisions on his shot selection either.

As for the first line, might be time to drop Stephens off of it. He was invisible the entire weekend, and much of last weekend, and basically all of January. I do not know who to move up there, but its time to drop him. I know some would stay Szmatula, but lets be honest, he does not share the puck much and is not a set up other type of center. Maybe Hedges, maybe if Cody comes back you put Pimm at center with Roy and Cody.

JM has never been shy about changing lines, so I would not be surprised if come Harvard, he does.

Credit to this team, they keep getting wins even though the their talent level is more of a 9th place team then a 2nd place team. Having the best college goalie in the land really helps even things out.
