Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

does anybody else feel that the same players are on the ice all the time. It felt that way to me and my brother on saturday night. I think Witt is our go to guy. Its very frustrating to see that we cannot bring the puck up the ice. Also checking. I remember the days when the Huskies would beat the **** out of other teams but now it seems like the toughness is gone. The good news is that I think we can maybe make the HEA playoffs this year.

The players are still tough. The refs have become tougher. It appears that no one told Cody.
If he were playing today, Brian Cummings would spend a minimum of 10 minutes of every game in the penalty box.

So does NU get back on track this weekend or is it the start of the decline for the rest if the season?

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

I was at the game last Saturday and they played very well. They were taking shots when in years passed they would not have and Witt played unbelievably well barring that one goal. I believe they can win this game as long as they keep the PIMs down, which is the one thing I'm not sure they can do.

That's a great question. IIRC, NU started it's downward slide to oblivion Just about a year ago after coughing one up in the final minutes to UNH. Eerily reminiscent of what happened last weekend vs BC. Sat. nite at UML is a tall order but, if nothing else, some of the lingering questions surrounding this team should be answered.

All the bloggers will pick UML, but as one poster said on the UML thread, if NU can hold it's own at BC, they can do so at Lowell. I will be at this game with some friends, I think it should be a good one. Lowell is rolling but I do think we have the capability of pulling off the upset. PIMs down, PP up. If those two things can happen, we have an excellent chance.

the same players are always on the ice because we have so few quality Hockey East players on this team. People were complaining after last week on how JM was changing up the lines. That was not really it, he just wants/needs to get a guy like Roy out there as much as he can since he is one of maybe 3 skilled forwards we have. Same goes for Manson on defense who I think might have played upwards of 30 minutes a game last week. Fahey like minutes. And its only early November.

This team can hit some, especially with Gunn in the lineup (if he ever gets back in). The calling of the games have changed, like has been said by others, which does change the hitting up. Today, if you hit a guy in the chest in open ice and his head goes backwards, they call something. That Beanpot game i think last year where Manson plastered that guy coming around the goal and they called him for hitting to hard. NU hits as well as the rest of the league. The problem is they do not skate, pass, or shoot as well as the rest of them.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

That reminds me: If all goes well Gunn could be back next week for UNH.

It may be that the shifting of the lines was precipitated by Cody's absence. He should be back tomorrow if he has promised to be good and simply play hockey. In 4 games, he's 1-3-4 wile averaging 10 PIMs per game. No single player should amass >30% of his team's PIMs when he's in the lineup. In fact, we've picked up > 75% of the seasons PIMs in the games that he's played. He's streaky, and he should be motivated to show what he can do, (which is plenty).

Huskies01,

I think your doom and gloom attitude toward this team is a little much. I mean, I'm usually pretty critical but I do see some signs of life in this team. Frankly, we could have won both games this past weekend and definitely should have won the home game, but we didn't. I see a lot more talent out there than you do apparently and think we will be middle of the pack in HE this year. I do think that #5 (Benning) is out of his league here, at least thus far. Also, Manson has not impressed me as Captain yet. I've seen a couple of things from him that I'm not exactly happy about. 1. Madigan had to tell him to go over and speak to the refs during one of the games at St. Lawrence. Given the circumstances, JM shouldn't have had to direct him to plead his case with the refs. 2. Last weekend at home vs. BC, we're on the powerplay breaking out of our zone and Manson is leisurely skating to the bench while another guy is chomping at the bit to get over the boards and join the play. Well, Manson finally got to the bench, but our guy missed joining the rush up ice and nothing came of it. My opinion, Manson needs to be skating full out to get to that bench for a change so fresh legs can get out there and create some chances, especially against a team like BC.

Anyway, and although we lost the 2 to BC, I think its a definite learning opportunity for several of the guys and contrary to some beliefs, a confidence builder. The team can be confident that they can play with the top teams in the league.

I see the same signs of life I see every year in October. And then it all goes to poop. I mean, this team did start off 2-0 last year against teams that are 100x better then what we faced the opening two weeks this year.

I disagree though, outside of Manson, Benning is the only other good dman on this team. Yeah, he had a really rough weekend, but that is to be expected against BC after the opening few weeks we had. How many guys like Hayes do you think he has seen in his career? Benning should only get better from here on out. Tough to say that about anybody else on the blue line.

As for Manson and skating leisurely, he plays more minutes then anybody else. Please keep that in mind.

I also do not think we were that amazing this past weekend. I think out goalie was and that both games could have been blow-outs in the first period if he did not stand on his head. Then BC slowed down and NU got back into somewhat. If Witt does not stand on his head though, those games would have been over long before the third period rolled around.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Ryan Belonger is out with a bulging disk in his lower back,we are praying for a speedy recovery :-)

Does anyone know why Cody is still out?

After giving BC 2 tough games and after watching BU last night, NU can handle BU this year. BU has no depth and they miss someone like Nieto. The defense looked very suspect last night.
