Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Further, I just went back to the replay on Hockey East's site.

NU had 2 players back on a 3 on 2 on this 2nd goal. A third NU player was back by the 3rd BC player at the time of the goal. With a 4th player in the zone gliding.

So maybe you should yell too many man some more. Maybe that'll work.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Well, just some quick thoughts,it's very exciting to see the generally positive direction that NU is headed in,it would hardly take a cursory glance back to seasons past to not be encouraged about this years team, that in itself is reason to be enthusiastic

I was deeply thrilled to attend last nights game,as its a strain or others kindness to get us there,Witt alone had me confident of the future, imagine watching your goalie trying to make stops and (me) needing to be medicated to watch the results,Rawlings is a great guy (from what I hear),but an at best inconsistent,at worst horrendous goalie,so when Witt finally has gotten some more regular starts,I'm finding that its so uncommon to have confidence as a fan, that its a surreal experience to see whats happening with Clay,I'm not saying hes the next Thiessen, but I can rest in the fact that he is getting better, and not bi-polar in results, and has come up with some really big saves.

The students esp. Doghouse was just insane!,in a powerful way,Matthews and NU fans make it,for me,the greatest place to see hockey anywhere I've ever been,I love it!

You guys being much wiser and more experienced than I am have brought out some great insight,I'm learning alot from you guys, alot of team history with the posters here,Ive only got 5 solid years as a fan,so I tip my hat in respect to you

No one has mentioned Ryan Belonger yet,I like how hes matured and feel he deserves linemates that he can learn to work with,he's a smart player and I'm keeping my eye on him.

which brings me to just say hi to Motorboaters and Midweststicks,it was amazing to finally meet you guys, albeit briefly, people like you are part of what makes it a joy to be an NU fan :-)

Maybe it will. You keep rooting for a PP that gives up short handed goals over and over again. I think there is a saying that goes something along the lines of "being insane is doing the same thing over and over again even though the result is not there"

I mean, even the HC came out after the game and said there are some issues on the PP.

I went back and watched too, since they do not show the play from the beginning, I guess you must be right. Still, how hard is to NOT give up shorthanded rushes over and over again like they did on the shorty that gave BC some faith they could come back. Its not like that was the first time all night that BC had a shorthanded break against us on the PP. That happened to be the time they scored.

Its called bad coaching. The team was in a position to win the game and the coaches let them down by not making adjustments to something that was failing.

You must have your head as far up JM behind as you did Cronins.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Well after a day, even at 0-2 in HEA, I was not totally disappointed with this weekend though we choked to BC at Matthews as usual. We only lost a one goal game AT BC where we normally get annihilated. The freshmen look really good and Witt is a legit #1 goalie. We won't be playing teams as good as BC for a long while so there's points to be had.

This team is clearly more talented than last year's and they have a less shaky goaltender (granted limited sample). The defense will make or break the season in the long run. Our transition play left a bit to be desired as BC had who knows how many odd man rushes this weekend, but it's nice to have 4 lines that can actually score. We did leave goals on the ice Saturday but it's a young team that will get better. By the end of the season, this will be a dangerous team in HEA and they are guaranteed at least one HEA playoff game.

Going into this weekend's match at Lowell, hoping our play between the blue lines is significantly better. Also, guys need more awareness on the PP, you can't have 4 guys behind the net on a PP, it is asking for a shorthanded opportunity. That happened at least twice this past weekend.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

I was not able to see Friday's game (other than the highlights) so I can only speak to what I saw Saturday at Matthews. The barn was rocking, one of the loudest games I have heard in my time at Northeastern. Thought we had many chances to put the puck in the net and just flat out missed them. The PP struggles have been talked about, but some specific moments: Reid and Snydeman on the breakways, Pimm missed an open backhand, ZAR had a couple chances on the doorstep (I think on the same PP)- these need to be converted. Make even one of those, whole different ballgame.

I don't want to beat a dead horse but the defense looked mediocre at best on Saturday. BC is built on speed so some of it may have been just them being faster than us and getting around/past us. However the lack of adjustments were troubling to me. BC had odd-man breakouts seemingly every time we tried to enter the offensive zone. Also the SH goal was absurd. Great drop pass for Matheson but Pimm's attempt at defense was brutal. I don't think he ever saw Brown coming around being him. No awareness there. Plus that is where (in my eyes) the tables turned and we couldn't get any momentum back on our side. The OT winner, again, no awareness as to where the BC guys are. ZAR was closest but we had 3 guys clogging the slot. Ugh. Defense was going to be the biggest issue going into the year, and it showed this weekend. It's a long season to work on it, but the work has to happen FAST.

Positives: As also has been said, we found our #1 goaltender. Witt single-handedly kept us in both games, he deserves this starting job. One unlucky goal and one back rebound shouldn't change that. Also very impressed with how Pond and Snydeman played, they were quite the presence on Saturday. Also tip of the hat to Szmatula, who seems to be everywhere when it's his shift. Very happy he stayed, he's a stud.

Every game is a chance to learn. Gotta take this one, learn from it, work to not let it happen again. On to Lowell.

Predictably fell out of the USCHO rankings. Highest point total for unranked however. Small victories.

We're #(twenty)1!!
We're #(twenty)1!!

I'll be interested to see where this season goes for NU. They competed for 60 minutes this weekend both nights and looked decent. No wonder they had such a good record against all those scrub teams!

Witt looked good as well. I feel bad for him giving up the Gaudreau goal from behind the goal line. He totally got played on that one, you could see it was intentional with Gaudreau celebrating so quickly after it crossed the line. Pick your poison, leave the post early to get a jump on saving the wraparound and risk giving up the goal like that OR stick to the post and risk getting dunked on with the wraparound.

They do not have enough talented experienced players to have an effective PP against a good skating team like BC. They will get better as year moves along. They are relying on Freshman and sophomores, its a learning curve. If you cannot see the difference in this team to last years the your see and eye dog is not telling you what is going on on the ice well enough.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Sometimes I feel as if I were stranded alone on a desert island with only one movie to watch. I watch the movie everyday. I watch the movie every night. I have seen the movie so many times, I can recite each line verbatim. I know every mark the actors must hit. I know every facial expression, every twitch, and every smirk.

Still, I watch the movie without fail.

Often I muse over how the director might have done something different, or how the actors might have otherwise played their roles.

Then one day a box washes up on the beach. I open it up. Inside is a brand new movie. I begin to watch it.

It is a remake of that movie. New actors. New director. New producer. Same plot. Shot for shot remake.

Then I realize it isn't a movie. It's just NU playing BC again.

And again.

And again.

And...

Welcome (back) to NU hockey but I know that you and I have been around long enough to know that the script will never change.

Couldn't you say the same regarding NU and BU over the years ? But maybe NU will have better luck against BU this year.

Heres the video link for the UMASS Lowell stream for Saturdays game with NU $9.95, (we are so blessed to have GoNUxstream for free!) https://www.goriverhawks.tv/amember/signup.php

FYI - UMass Lowell will honor the victims, survivors and first responders of the Boston Marathon bombing on Saturday night. A portion of the ticket sales from the game will support Boston Marathon bombing survivors through America's Fund and the UMass Lowell Boston Marathon Scholarship Fund.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

So.... a blind man walks into a bar with his seeing-eye dog. He stands in the center of the bar, takes the dog by the chain, and starts swinging him above his head.

Everyone stops and stares. Upset about the way the animal is being treated, a patron runs up & demands, "What the hell are you doing?"

The blind man turns toward the patron and says, "Oh, nothing, just looking around"..

/don't touch my see and eye dog
