Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

They definitely got outplayed for the first 30 minutes. Witt was the only reason it wasn't 5-0 after the 1st. They did finally wake up halfway through the second and looked pretty good. Roy with a couple more goals.

Wow.. thks. Gluck tomorrow.. that's g'luck with a little less luck & a lot more effort!

I watched this on a grainy stream before I logged on to my work site and streamed form the dedicated line much better. We got killed for 30 mins and outshot 2 to 1 and Witt stood on hit head. Nice job!

We would historically lose a game like this and the Saints are no slouches. What is different? The offensive talent of Roy and the crew of freshman who just seem to know they are more talented and can hit a gas peddle and make you look silly even when they are behind and not playing all that well. Roy has 11 pts in 5 games that is unheard of at this level. Still have HE teams to put us to the real test.

However, nobody expected this ad nobody deserves this more than all of us! I am not saying they are going to win anything but they are as talented as the other dog and birds in town and to some extent that really has been the problem for decades.

Let's have fun with 26 goals in 5 games, I mean really, we could have six wins on week 3 and had only 9 all of last year! I don't want to jinx it, but you can't coach or teach lines to go to the net like they are.

This team has a air o confidence, that I have not seen in a long time. They were down outshot and in true NU fashion might have folded, instead they just continued to play hard, and perhaps they have always tried to do that, but something is different. I just think that Roy, Mike S and ZAR feel they can score at will and that must be a great feeling.

good points Rossi.. let's enjoy it while it las.....er.. while it becomes part of the team fabric.. :-)

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Impressive comeback by your boys tonight and yes your goalie stole one.

Too many penalties by us and a fair amount by the Huskies as well.

Congrats on a nice comeback win on the road. Hoping for a reversal of fortunes tomorrow night. We too are a very young team. We have a couple of seniors on the first line and a couple on D but the vast majority of our team are all freshman.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

No Chris Rawlings talk tonight, how about Clay Witt!! wow!,very encouraging win as they begin a really tough stretch,St Lawrence is a good team and seemed to match up well,so it was nice to see such a good win,I liked the energy Belonger/Syndeman and Pond brought to the ice tonight,

Another occasion to be thankful for GoNUxstream and all the people who put it together (and that it's free :-))I could only get that feed to work at standard res.(at best) but still thanks to ST L. for having it,I'm sure it's very good on other nights, and that rink looked classic from the video, that would be a haul but what an area and arena to catch/play a game!

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Uh oh...somebody learned how to score. We're averaging Free Fries, something we never did once at home last year. Roy is unbelievable, he was very quiet for the first half of the game and then he flipped the switch to tie the game and then give us an insurance goal late. Roy vs. Gaudreau is must-see TV next weekend. Szmatula is the best freshman forward (other than Roy) NU has had since my freshman year in 2006. Also, a hat-tip to Josh Manson; starting the first 5 games of the year +12 isn't a bad way to begin your captaincy.

Appleton is a classic old barn. Very homey. Nice touches. Wood everywhere including the seats. Here is a pic that does it justice. *******http://saintsathletics.com/images/2013/7/24/960appleton36x24.jpg********

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

So, who gets the start tonight? Play Witt again because he came up with some big saves that kept us in the game against improved competition or give Roy a shot to see what he can do against the same competition?

Door Number 2. The jury has been out on the goalie situation since neither of them were pressured very much in the first four games. Witt got a pretty good test last night and apparently passed with flying colors. Now it's time to see how DRoy hangs in against presumably tougher competition. Better to get the second part of the goaltending answer now than later.

Agree.. before the HE schedule starts.. test both tenders. DRoy watched the gm last night. he knows he'll be up against a fiesty & talented SLU squad tonight. They'll have one thing on their mind.. good test for the whole team.

Slow down a second. We are 5 games into a season with 4 of them against cupcake opponents. We always seem to have a freshman do great each year. C Costello, W MacLeod, S Qualier, G Vermeersch, B Reid, L Karlsson, K Roy (Him being the best while being on the worst team). It's awesome to get excited, but let's see how the season plays out against Hockey East opponents.

First off, we have every right and reason to be excited. We are 5-0-0 and that is already over half the wins we had last season. Last season we half-assed it against Alabama-Huntsville, this year we housed them. Last year we lost to Bentley at home. In fact they beat us down 6-3. St. Lawrence housed us at home last year 6-3. This year we came back in a game NU routinely loses on the road. This team has already put home 26 goals on the season, over 25% of last year's 81. This team, though early in the season, has shown it can score in bunches.

Coming off a 9-win season, we cannot call any schedule cupcake because most teams, even Holy Cross, say, oh it's just Northeastern, a very winnable game. Szmatula is definitely better than every guy on that list (as far as freshman are concerned) except maybe MacLeod and Quailer. Even Reid didn't start producing until the Beanpot.

We'll see how this team does against Hockey East competition but St. Lawrence swept Maine this season so they are no slouches. They also have one of the best forwards in the nation in Greg Carey. Last night was a solid win in the face of an 0-2 deficit.

Obviously though, next weekend the defense will be seriously tested against BC. That'll be an exciting home and home for sure but it's okay to be excited right now.

Regardless of who they beat, they are 5-0. Look at recent history against the cupcakes. There are a couple of loses to Bently, Holy Cross in the past. If they lost any of these games people would be all over them. They won them, give the team some credit.

6-4 SLU final with ENG at the end. Nice comeback by the Saints.. sounded like they got out of the gate & got ahead early. Tough playing catch up night in night out. Hopefully our team got good experience (especially the tenders) so we can get ready for HE schedule & rest of the season. Would be curious to hear about our goaltending tonight.. from anyone who saw the gm. Split wknd against some decent competition. Well played team.

Roy did OK in net. Not his fault on most of the goals, plus he was beseiged in the first two periods as SLU was all over him and NU. SOme of the goals PP that we scored tonight were very pretty goals. I wouldn't blame the loss on the goalie. More mysterious was Huskies lack of effective play in the first two periods. They only had like 9 SOG towards the end of the second period. To their credit...when we blew some coverages, your boys buried their chances.

Not only did SLU sweep Maine but they split on the road with Ferris State and were competitive in both those games. We are not picked to finish very high in the ECAC, but, the ECAC is a league of parity. I think the split at Appleton was a good result for both squads and each team has a lot to be happy about and build off of after this weekend.

Good luck the rest of the season.

Watched the SLU video feed, but D. Roy certainly saw a good bit of action tonight. 3 SLU goals were on the PP, including some beautiful goals, hard to fault Roy on any of those. Really, thinking back on it, I didn't feel any were truly soft goals. Somebody at the game could probably correct me if I'm wrong. SLU carried the first 50 minutes or so, but the last 10 it felt like they were really hanging on. My first thought was "here we go again."

Good series with you guys. Arguably stole Friday night's game, but SLU also played a bit undisciplined, and your guys capitalized on it. Best of luck to you guys the rest of the year, and please beat those thugs next weekend, alright? ;)

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

If nothing else, this past weekend seemed to provide some answers to open questions. In terms of goaltending, Witt seemed to hold up well under pressure on Friday night while DRoy (from what some who were there report) was largely hung out to dry on Saturday. But so long as no goals are being scored from the corners or beyond the center red line, goaltending looks to be improved over last year. Maybe significantly so.

Defense is still the Achilles heel of this team. SLU was able to pin them deep for long periods and that doesn't bode well.

I wasn't happy with the way the forwards seemed to play back on their heels for the better part of both SLU games although the defense might have had something to do with this. OTOH, you have to be impressed with the way they came back on both nights. If nothing else, the comebacks speak to conditioning and attitude.

Bottom line, this team is nowhere near as bad as some made it out to be during the off-season but not so good that everyone should be making hotel reservations in Philly for next March. The future is starting to look bright, assuming NU can keep most of the freshmen around for more than a couple of years.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Derick Roy looked fine. I wouldn't put any of the goals on him that game. They were all grade A opportunities. That said, Witt has to start both games vs. BC if we want any chance of points. Roy made the saves he needed to make, Witt made saves that were beyond ordinary. BC is going to get its chances both games. We are going to have to get great goaltending.

Great goaltending as well as discipline would be the 2 keys to the game IMO. Our offense will score, but the second SLU game was brutal to watch because of all the penalties, and BC will make a team suffer if it gets that many PP chances. We are the second most penalized team in the country, it cannot be emphasized enough how important it is to keep the PIMs down.

Witt, I agree, should get the nod both times. In my eyes he is our clear number 1. Roy has shown he can be a capable goalie as well but Witt is the man we need between the pipes. BC will likely split their goaltenders, but JM should stay with Clay.
