Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

He was in Nashville's camp. Must have impressed them. We really had him for one season as he was dinged up all of last year. Oh well.

Hello, ZAR?

He was supposed to be coming in to replace Szmatula if he decided to transfer. Looks like he will be coming regardless of Szmatula's decision. If he does transfer, that will free up another scholarship for Madigan & Co. Unfortunately, his departure this late in the offseason limits Madigan's options.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Per Mike McMahon (@mikemcmahonCHN):

From 3 sources, Northeastern F Ludwig Karlsson will forgo his final 2 seasons & sign an NHL deal. No details on team. Likely announced Thurs

Well, this hurts....

Sucks because of timing but I was never all that impressed. Tough to lose an upperclassman, I guess Jake Newton has gone into the business of advising. This kid is never playing NHL, so what is his hurry to play AHL. He will be there for 2 years.

I wish we got to see him click with Roy for a full healthy season. His freshman season showed some promise in terms of scoring, but last year's injury prevented us from seeing his improvement.

I'm excited to see ZAR though. Based off what I've read about him, I think he will do well his first year here

Long as Madigan is at the helm.. look for more of the same.

Uninspiring, unqualified Coach will lead to more of the same.. keep your rose shades on... What a debacle the program has turned into.. ouch!

Yes, we know how you feel about Madigan. Try to accept the fact that he'll be the coach for at least two more years.

I doubt that Karlsson's signing has anything to do with anything beyond the fact that an opportunity was presented to him and he decided to take it. He may have heard his hockey clock ticking. Perhaps his agent/"advisor" sniffed a fee. He thinks he has a chance to beat the odds and to have a few bucks in his pocket for the first time.

I wish him luck. If he makes it big, I hope he'll repay his scholarship into the coach's discretionary fund.

Yes, we know how you feel about Madigan..

so i am out of sync with what % of NU fans??.. absolutely I will applaud a HC change!.. I am working on biting my tongue with the status quo.. actually I have tried to just avoid comment at times.. just that its one after the other.. no one wants to play for this guy & that is hurting us big time!

well, ..i applaud your continuing optimism for the nxt ,couple (god help us) seasons. Me.. i don't need anymore writing on the wall.. but I do care about the program & its future & we not heading in the right direction, that's all. Does everybody in the AD office have their head in the sand!?!

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Karlsson's leaving was driven by two things. He has a very aggressive agent who went out looking for offers for him. I wouldn't be surprised if neither Anaheim or Nashville (where he went to camps) signs him. They've had the best look at him. If someone else signs him what does that tell you?

Also, I understand that Ludwig really didn't enjoy going to school. Not everyone does. Signing solves that problem for him.

The loss isn't quite what it looks like. The Szmatula family made a visit to Boston several days ago to meet with Jimmy. The bottom line is: Szmatula is coming to Northeastern this fall, and everyone is very happy with the way the matter was concluded. In addition, ZAR will be coming. That can't be formallly announced by the school until a bit of paperwork is completed He was admitted last fall.

Net,net, the team is undoubtedly stronger than it would have been had Ludwig returned Szmats remained in limbo. We have our first win before the season has even started!

Definitely appears that way...

Working to confirm, but it appears that Mike Szmatula will play for Northeastern after all. Should not affect ZAR's arrival

Report is that Karlsson will be signing with the Ottawa Senators.

VERY pleased to hear the Szmatula situation is finally ending. That story was getting very old, but I am excited that he will be attending NU and playing for us. The fact that everyone is happy with the resolution of the situation is a good sign. Szmatula and ZAR coming in, as you said, definitely makes this team stronger even with Karlsson leaving.

Karlsson had no problems with class. He's 22 and got an offer. Same reason Reid left but he stayed a year longer.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

And after all the Szmatula hooplah, he'll be playing here after all. How funny....sort of.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Great ending for NU, this will be referred to as the Madigan rule going forward. This just set the bar for other schools telling kids no way we are letting you out. Team will be better in the second half, I still believe that record wise team will be close to same as last year, but my feeling is that this is year 1 of the move in the right direction. You will see the improvements, better players here, and coming in next year. I do believe this.

I like NU's forwards. I'm just not sure who's going to keep pucks out of the Huskies net.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

We know Witt can play. He was never healthy last year and will benefit from, what should/must be, an improved Defense in front of him. Mt. also has shown flashs of ability at times. Derrick Roy is the mystery man. If he has his little brother's sense of anticipation and quick hands, he might be a positive surprise. I can't stress enough how important it is for our D to protect and control their own zone.
The team will have 19 freshman and sophomores. All except Nathan Ferriero have been recruited by Madigan and staff. There's some pretty fair talent in that group. That's a formula for a team that gels in January if the kids (and the D) develops as hoped.

It's nice to have the off season issues settled.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Happy for Karlsson but sad at his departure, excited reading about the young men coming in , dying for some hockey bring it on!

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Hopefully the season is half as exciting as the off-season has been. And hopefully Szmatula and Iginla both produce for their 2013 teams despite not wanting to play there. It sounds like Szmatula is bolting after this season anyway, so we might as well get a productive year out of him. I like Pimm's game, but he is not a #1 center.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

According to HuskyHockeyNews, "Zach Aston-Reese has signed his NLI. He will be the replacement for Karlsson."

Sounds like the roster is pretty much complete. Looking forward to seeing it in action come October
