Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Right on time! If there's one thing the readers of these boards can count on it's the gratuitous snarky comment by Mr. Nick. The man(?) is a model of consistency.

Things at NU are so bad he'd rather pay a year's worth of tuition out of pocket to go somewhere else? Sounds about right.

It's good to see that the moron trolls are working on fridays in the summer.

Things aren't bad at NU. He never said anything like that. Sven(gali) Montgomery has led him to believe that things will be just peachy at Denver. Perhaps the academic "burden" will be more to his liking there.

Montgomery probably thought he'd be taking the kid to Maine with him, but he never even got a sniff of Bear. I thought it was odd when Montgomery chose the disaffected, overhyped and underachieving Joe Manno to be Szmats' roommate after the kid had already signed with NU. What was that all about???

Manno went on to post mediocre numbers while playing on Dubuque's third line. And he didn't think he was treated fairly at NU?? Next winter, his skills will be on display in US College Hockey Siberia a.ka.a Michigan's U.P. at Northern Michigan.

When Joe Manno left my reaction was who cares. He was terrible, I couldn't believe how weak a skater he was. Big upgrade to go to N.Michigan, I forgot they had a hockey team.

I still applaud Jim Madigan and NU for holding there ground on this.

I am curious as to how many texts Jim M received from other coach's around the country of support. I am betting quite a few.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Anyone have a scouting report on ZAR? All I heard was that he had a terrible first half of a junior season last year (he was a healthy scratch IIRC), and then turned it on and played very well down the stretch. Sounds like a talented kid who's going to need some time to adjust to the college game.

The most recent comment I have seen appeared on the Lincolnstarsblog.com as part of a review of training camp.

" My MVP of Team White goes to Zach Aston-Reese who is the prototypical power forward. Honestly, ZAR should be playing college hockey this fall. He's a man among boys out there on the ice. When he has the puck along the boards, it's impossible to knock him off the puck."

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

I had also heard that he was ready for college hockey and another year of juniors was going to be a waste of time for him.

He probably wouldn't be allowed to practice with the team. I don't know if he can attend on a hockey scholarship under those circumstances. If he wants to follow his Svengali Montgomery badly enough to pay for a year at a private university, he's welcome to do so. I hope, for his sake, that Monty's spell doesn't wear off.

Transfers/Whatever-you-call-this-scenario can practice and get an athletic scholarship during the year they are ineligible to play games.

He 100% cannot get athletic money from Denver or any other school next year.

Depends on the ultimate agreement reached by NU/NCAA/Recruit, NU technically could try to prevent it and be within the letter of the law for NCAA, but the final ruling rarely comes down that way... whether DU has money available in August or wants to give any to a kid who won't see the ice next year is another story.

Oh no.....not text messages. Watch out Coach, Peter Roby might come after you and run you out of town. Texting is EVIL and against NCAA rules.......well......it kind of used to be......kinda.....umm...we're not really sure actually........

Peter Roby is a BOZO!

You're right about the HA. The texting rule was changed, but Roby hasn't

I ran into Cro with his mom in a restaurant in Kennebunkport over the weekend. He looked well, but what struck me was that he was wearing his Northeastern Hockey hat.:). The last two minutes of the 7th game in Boston was co$tly to him and his players. Darn!

DU does not have a long bench and I would certainly hope Sz does not receive any $ for not playing. If there is any money, which I doubt, give it to someone who honored his word.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

I think it's funny that NU fans are making a big deal out of this kid. You guys just think he's good because DU has better players then you do. It's not like Gwoz lost a recruiting battle with you guys.
If the kid got money while having to sit out, it could be the ultimate scam.. One year of good education and improving his hockey skills at DU practices. Then maybe he goes pro. Go DU!

You are kidding, right? We recruited him after the coaches spotted him last summer, before he ever set eyes on Dubuque. I doubt that anyone on this board worries that Denver has better players, as we play the Pioneers about once per decade. Assuming that this young gentleman really cares about his education, you could be right about a potential scamming IF he is allowed to practice with the team. If he can't, I'd be shocked if he enrolled. If you know his recent hockey dealings, you know that he has not shown the kind of character that would lead me to expect that he'll ever wear the "C" for either of our teams.

I wonder about the advice he's getting, as it has landed him squarely between a rock and a hard place. This story is getting old.

He got bad advice to publicly express his desire to get out of NLOI at NU. If he been silent about it he could have possibly saved face and had more options. Now he has very few viable options.

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

Per Mike McMahon (@mikemcmahonCHN):

From 3 sources, Northeastern F Ludwig Karlsson will forgo his final 2 seasons & sign an NHL deal. No details on team. Likely announced Thurs

Well, this hurts....

Re: Northeastern Hockey 2013-14 Season

He was in Nashville's camp. Must have impressed them. We really had him for one season as he was dinged up all of last year. Oh well.

Hello, ZAR?
