Northeastern 2025-26: After Hours at the Old Barn

It's going to be a long slog these next seasons. I most likely won't be re-upping for season tickets. I've had my seats since the 01-02 season. It was a great investment for my then 10 year old son and I after my wife passed. Now, my son lives two hours away, I'm 70 years old and nature is slowing me down. Even the walk from the garage to the Arena was harder than I'd like. I went to my first college hockey game on Feb 18 1976. I've had a lot of fun and a great fifty years.

I'm not certain, ticket packages will even be offered while we are guests at Walter Brown and the Bright Center these next 90 home but really away games. If they offer packages, I'm not likely going to purchase one. I've had season tix since 1990. I saw my 500th college hockey game my 350th NU game this season. A couple of my kids who attended most of these games with me are now in Plymouth and Portsmouth NH and my younger son who went to NU and lives in Southie only attends a couple of games a year. I'll be 60, this Spring and retired and snowbirding a few Winter months each year by the time the new rink opens. So, its the end of an era for me. This season went down the tubes so fast and with the new NCAA indexed ranking system it's nearly impossible to move up in the rankings unless you are playing and winning by large goal differentials and also playing teams already ranked high up in the calculator. So unless we win the HE tournament it's pretty much over. Its statistically one of the worst post break records NU has ever had as we are 2 and 9 since Jan 1. Only Cronin's inaugural season is worse. I still intend to go the the Harvard game but only because Im working with a client in their Seaport HQ today and am already in town. It was a tough loss in the opener and could have gone either way. However, they really aren't playing well in any area of the game. Just kind of playing out the string and coming to the realization that we really can't expect much until the new rink opens its doors. This endeavor is and is going to continue to be disruptive to recruiting, routine, practice, portal possibilities and revenue stream that any form of success from the win column going forward until the new facility opens is highly unlikely. Just the sheer logistics for a player and a fan really suck. Its somewhat unprecedented set of circumstances because nearly every DIV one hockey team that I could think of who built a new rink had access and use of their old one untill their new one opened. Anyway, hopefully they can pull out a W against a very mediocre Crimson team tonight.

Agreeing with everything you have said above. However, was wondering if the hit to recruiting is mostly complete? Thinking we won't get that last minute portal transfer to come in, but i'm guessing the kids who have already committed for 26/27 and 27/28 already knew the situation before committing, and will hang in there to play in the new building for their final two or three seasons. Still, it is hard to be optimistic based on what we have seen since Jan 1st.

Hoping the schedule for the next two years provides some recruits (and "season ticket holders") a carrot or two (Ireland, decent travel out west or to some big time programs) to keep things interesting.

Before some of you check yourselves into an old folks' home, take heart in knowing that I have years on all of you and fully intend to be around when this program finally comes out the other end of the long, cold, dark, tunnel in which it now finds itself. With the base of operations now at the Boch Ice Center, in Dedham, the players are on the bus every day. No idea how they get to class or get any academic work done. The situation is not only a recruiting killer but also a retention obstacle. Looks like NU will be plucking leftovers from the transfer portal for the next few years. Not what anyone wants but it's reality. And no sense even talking about NIL.

But hockey is not alone. Hoops is at 6-17 (though at least it has an on-campus home), so, this is shaping up as the worst winter sports season in memory. The "times that try men's souls" is upon us. Abandon ship, if that's your wont but I'll be strapping myself to the mainmast.

BTW, the 2025-26 Part II thread (Road Show) is now up and running.

And like that NU beats PC, Merrimack beats BC and New Hampshire beats BU. HE is insane. I'm not abandoning ship but I won't be here anymore 3 months of every season when they return to normalcy. Nice win tonight.

In the "not that it matters too much" category.............Thinking out loud, but if NU somehow manages to finish 7th (and has to host a playoff game against whomever), where will the "home game" be? I can't imagine they would play at the lower seeds site, but maybe no other option. Thoughts?

Walter Brown at BU is logical choice- easiest for students if not on break

The HE women's season will be wrapped up by then as well, which might make it easier availability-wise than the other options which host men's teams

6 pt weekend away. Oh wait, they are all away from now on. Wow, all 3 Lowell goalies suck! Lol. It was nice to see so many contributions from freshman and bench players while Dylan is out. That said, I would not put too much emphasis on this win. Sometimes you face a team that is having a bad night. Still would like to see a deep run in the HE tournament

I worked LUG (MENS League) games there the other night and WB has been upgraded, the locker rooms and even the old scoreboard hanging over center ice is replaced with a more modern one. Should be fine until the NEW Matthews is complete and free admission. Can't beat that.

Taking absolutely nothing away from the Saturday Night Massacre, anytime a team scores three goals on its first five shots, the rest of the game becomes garbage time. Really (and surprisingly), it looked like UML was just mailing it in after the fourth goal. Nonetheless, the seeming end of the scoring drought comes at a perfect time what with Maine waiting in the wings for next weekend (including a "bright lights" game in Portland).

Scores, stats, and W-L aside, I think these players deserve a ton of credit for hanging in there under difficult circumstances since the closing of Matthews. It can't be easy getting on a bus early every morning to make the trek out to Boch for practice and video sessions, and then back to campus. It's a grind on top of a grind that won't end anytime soon and is a compelling story unto itself.

i had to double check on the stats, b/c i couldn't believe they did that without Dylan and "Machoo". Interesting to see what the result is whenever the rest of the offense comes back.
Any word on Lemay? Nice young man, i got to chat with him on a couple of occasions. Hope he can get back to playing sometime soon.
And great to see Jones really playing with some confidence. It was noticeable.

Embarassing. This team has unavoidable issues what with having to shuttle back-and-forth to Dedham every day but they're better than what showed last night.

BTW, all of those in-ice ads made my eyes hurt!
