North Star College Cup - MN, UMD, MSU, SCSU

Re: North Star College Cup - MN, UMD, MSU, SCSU

And after the WCHA split I believe the gophers increased the home games by two per year. I could be wrong on that though. I left Duluth about the time that scheduling for this season was taking place. Now when I get a chance to see the guys I still know that are with the team, finances are never brought up.

I can't believe you are complaining about this.

Did you honestly expect the Gophers to schedule a home series 1 year followed by an away the next with every team in the state? Or should they have only done it with Duluth and maybe St. Cloud, and just not played BSU and Mankato at all? Or would it have been better to have a game against MN once every 3-4 years?

Use your noodle, brother.

Good news for the tourney if it happens.

My thoughts I posted on GPL:

If I'm a coach, even if I hate shootouts, I don't know if I could risk injury by committing to an open-ended game when a SO would take care of it. Especially when the NCAA recognizes it as a tie (does the Beanpot OT get recognized by the NCAA?)

Obviously he knows better than I do, so I know this point doesn't escape him.

Would I prefer they duke it out until we have a winner? Absolutely. But would I trade that for one injury even if it was once every 20 years? Yeesh... I don't think I would.

Re: North Star College Cup - MN, UMD, MSU, SCSU

My understanding is that games played to conclusion get counted as wins/losses by NCAA. Games settled by shootouts get counted as ties.

Re: North Star College Cup - MN, UMD, MSU, SCSU

I think I still stick with the SO for these tournaments. As distasteful as that is.

How could you not complain about this if you were any of the other schools? The original proposition was 4 home games to 2 away, and they gophers would "consider" playing teams in the WCHA. This was turned down by both SCSU and UMD, not sure what MSU or BSU did. Like I said if you take away a sell out game a year that has big financial burdens on the smaller schools. SCSU and UMD could easily schedule a different opponent and sell out the rink. We all benefit from playing the gophers but we don't need you to keep the programs running, and the initial proposal of a 2:1 series split was insulting to everyone.

The NSCC is a great solution to have the MN schools play each other and if the revenue is split 25% then it is the perfect solution, including NOT rotating the gophers out.

Maybe you should use your noodle. The gophers would be able to get away with the 2:1 series splits but playing UAH UAA Bowling Green any AHA team who would sign up for that doesn't help the UofM program.

Boston College? Notre Dame? These are the teams we're scheduling among non-Minnesota teams.

With the current 22:14 home split that leaves 4 non-conference away games. These are reserved for the BC's BU's UND's ect. This leaves 8 NC home games available. As I had stated earlier the 2:1 split was proposed before the NSCC. These eight games were to be filled using the 2:1 home series ratio. Can you think of 4 quality opponents that would sign up for this? Maybe some ECAC schools with a lot of money and small rinks, but those would be tough tickets for Minny to sell.

Re: North Star College Cup - MN, UMD, MSU, SCSU

BC and Notre dame this year. Plus the Ice Breaker tourney this year and the annual Marriucci Classic. That's four.

We have NoDak coming in a couple years and I'm sure we'll be looking to schedule teams like Maine, BC, and other top tier teams to take the place of BC & ND.

You are wrong. The benefit of the game experience of playing in that pressure situation at the end of the year has to be considered in your equation.

Re: North Star College Cup - MN, UMD, MSU, SCSU

You've already proven you aren't allowed to make this assertion anymore.

fyp

I have a 2011 Championship ring made worthless by having my name put on it (Twice actually, the last name is on the outside about the frozen four location WCHA logo and overall record, first and last is on the inside with first national championship written below it). If you want to see it I'll meet up with you for a beer next NSCC. I spent the majority of my final 2 1/2 years in Duluth at the DECC and Amsoil (the couches in the DECC players lounge were way better to sleep on). I never need tickets to away games and my Amsoil key still works. Today I wore a white UMD hockey polo that was given to all participants of the UMD alum golf event on the last weekend in July. There are a lot of facts I know.

Whoa, pump the brakes bud. Sheesh. Has this board completely lost track of the definition of "opinion"?

For the record, I did take that into account and there are plenty of opportunities in the regular season for that. One game that goes deep into overtime vs. an injury to a key player? I'll take the SO and no chance at an injury vs. one extra game of "experience" that would be someone marginal when taken across an entire season of OT ties and other high pressure games decided in regulation.

Oh yeah?! Well I caught a sponge puck from Goldy in a game once. And I have an authentic jersey WHICH THEY DON'T EVEN SELL ANYMORE. Oh, and I have autographs from every player from the last two years.

SO THERE!

:)

dxmnkd, you are absolutely correct in my opinion. There could be 5 mins of OT that the NCAA recognizes an additional 5-10 of overtime play that the NCAA rules as a tie for the fans. After that a shootout. A high intensity regular season game that could be 80+ minutes is silly on a player safety standpoint.

I'm torn, I really am. I absolutely despise shootouts (and as mentioned above, so does Lucia), but if I'm a coach, the risk/consequence matrix just doesn't line up with the overall reward. The reward is almost nil.

Lucia knows what he's doing, so I'll defer to him. But I just know the uproar would be deafening if we lost a player like Wilcox, Fasching, or Rau in the 3rd OT of a game that could have been decided in a SO.

Risk isn't worth the reward. Dead tired players are more prone to injury and you have next weeks games to play to boot. Every fan in that building wanted it to be decided by a real goal, but if you look at the holistic picture playing it out doesn't make sense. Of course we all are going to complain about some aspect of the game, as is the nature of the beast when people have vested interest in sports. Truth of the matter is we all got spoiled by one heck of an inaugural championship game.

But you also obviously forgot SO's are stupid. That carries more weight in your mathematical equation than the chance for injury quotient.

And you are correct, people are allowed to have opinions, including wrong ones, as you have proven. People are also still allowed to be sarcastic, last time I checked the by-rules. You might remember that if you didn't take half the year off, Buster.

And I don't do smilies, so you gotta figure out the sarcasm yourself - no hints.
