North Star College Cup - MN, UMD, MSU, SCSU

Re: North Star College Cup - MN, UMD, MSU, SCSU

That would be in line with the Gophers fear of playing any difficult teams away from home.

You mean fear of playing teams like Notre Dame this year and BC/BU next year?

Granted, two years does not overcome many years of road cupcakes, but things are changing...

Re: North Star College Cup - MN, UMD, MSU, SCSU

I think this whole point about rotating teams in and out will be moot in 5 years when BSU folds their program due to sagging attendance and interest.

Don't know if this is true or not, but the Gophers did do their part to help. In their series at BSU earlier the Sanford Center was filled very close to capacity for both games.

So you agree with my point basically.

Also it is one game against BC and one game against Northeastern next year.

Why should any of the 5 sit out? They should add a Thurs eve game for the two lowest seeds(based on RPI or KRACH) and have the highest seed get a bye or automatic Fri eve. play the winner of the Thurs eve game.

You could also push the Fri games start time back an hour or two if you want better attendance or basically adopt the Final Five format.

Uneven game totals is why.
Whoever loses that Thursday game plays just once, if you have a 3rd place game, then the winner on Thursday would play 3, and everyone else plays 2.
Also, what is the cut off for the rankings to decide who plays where, the week before? 2 weeks?
Logistical nightmare and a ticket selling hell as well.

I know this is sacrilege but here goes... if you are trying to generate attendance and money.

Add North Dakota and change the name to the 1849-58 Minnesota Territory College Cup.
All 6 Teams locked in each year and rotated within the bracket year to year. Steal the Original 6 moniker.
2 Thurs Eve, 2 Fri eve and 2 Sat games - 3rd place and Championship.
4 teams could possibly play 3, other 2, 2 games. Or eliminate the 3rd place game.

The weird thing is, if this tournament survives for ten years or so, there's a fairly good chance that a defending champ will be rotated out of the schedule. Hypothetically, imagine that champ won it four consecutive times. On the trophy, it'd look like 3-1, or 2-2, or 1-3 with some other team breaking up their streak. Not that it really amounts to anything, but it'll look weird.

Also, long term bragging rights for the Gophers like "we won it four consecutive years" will come with an asterisk from the POV of the other four teams. They should be expected to win it at least 1 out of 4 years to claim mediocre success, where the other teams need only to win it once every five years (approximately). Cue the math wizzes to tell me what that number should actually be.

That's true, it would have to be judged by how many tourney wins in how many appearances over a stretch instead of how many tourney wins in a set number of years.

Like you said, the Gophers winning one title in four years would be equivalent to one title in five years (four appearances) for the other schools.

If this tourney survives ten years, we would probably have to divide # of tourney wins by appearances to make any accurate comparions on tourney success.

I already tried sharing a tissue......

Hopefully Biddco doesn't see this.

I like it! mostly because of the history behind the Minnesota Territory. Plus then sad UND fans who aren't invited to this thing would be appeased.

Re: North Star College Cup - MN, UMD, MSU, SCSU

Does this mean Grand Forks would be annexed into the State of Minnesota? Not so sure I like that idea :p

It might :(

But then we get the Red Pepper! And maybe we can "drink their milkshake" in Williston...
