North Star College Cup: Minnesota State, UMD, Minnesota & Bemidji State

Re: North Star College Cup: Minnesota State, UMD, Minnesota & Bemidji State

I just looked at my cable schedule. It shows the Duluth/Bemidji game on at 4:00 on Fox College Sports (418 on Charter.) FSN+ is just showing "Regional Sports Extra Games," so I don't know if it will be on there. Probably.

Re: North Star College Cup: Minnesota State, UMD, Minnesota & Bemidji State

It's Gameday!!

Tonight's tilt is one of the classic matchups of the season. Over the years, the Gophers/Mavs rivalry has generally been marked by speed, physicality and tenacity. I'll never forget the gritty battles of the 2008 WCHA playoffs when these teams locked horns and went a record 5 OTs in three nights.

This game has a little different twist to it than in years past. The MSUM Mavericks are currently for the first time flying high as the #1 team in the nation and have the best winning percentage since entering D1 men's hockey as an independent in 1996-97. Credit Mike Hastings for compiling a better record in his first three seasons than any other coach in their program's history. IMO the man is a lock for 2015 Spencer Penrose NCAA D1 Coach of the Year Award.

The Mavs roll into the X 11-1-1 in their last 13 games compared to a 4-9-0 record (inc. U18, 2 shootouts loses) for the Gophers. Offensively, both veteran teams match up well averaging over 3Gs/game, but defensively the Mavs have the edge allowing only 2Gs/game vs the Gophers nearly 3Gs. Stephon Williams (NYI) is having an outstanding season between the pipes for the Mavs and holds a commanding edge in GAA with his college career best 1.71 over Adam Wilcox's (TBL) 2.45.

The Gophers have struggled burying the puck over the past several games as well as closing teams out; and are only 3-4 in one goal games vs the Mavs 4-1. The difference has been the Gophers typically come out of the gate with guns blazing in the first period, while the Mavs seem to improve as the game progresses and are statistically the stronger scoring team in the third period. Secondly, the Mavs are 6th in the nation in even strength goals vs the Gophers, who tend to rely too much on PPGs, currently parked at #25.

There's no question, this is THE most important game the Minnesota Golden Gophers will play this regular season. With the Mavs sitting on top the PWR, the Gophers (PWR #19) obviously have much more at stake riding on Friday's outcome. If they win, they dramatically increase their chances of climbing back into the 16 team tournament field. If they lose while other surrounding TUCs with relatively weak game schedules win this weekend, the Gophers will continue to descend into the pairwise basement.

Although Adam Wilcox has shown some flaws lately, he'll be fired up and I suspect we'll see a duel between two excellent goalies. My three keys for success for the Golden Gophers tonight are: 1) play shutdown D, 2) keep Mav shots on the perimeter, and 3) create scoring chances on Williams's in close and shoot with accuracy (pick your spot!!).

In an intrastate battle like this anything can happen. If the Gophers can keep it tight for 60 min. and Wilcox is on, a Gopher upset is a very real possibility. Go Gophers!:)

Whoa curt is around?! Couldn't agree more though.

Games like this make me nervous. I like to drop by and hear the conversation. It doesn't help, but at least I'm distracted.

I think a lot of hockey fans who are not gopher or mav fans will be watching this one because of the expected quality of play. For some reason, I've always thought of MSU as a dangerous team that can turn things around quickly. Now they have the talent and coaching to be playing with a lead more, which makes them even more difficult to bury. The gophs have all that talent and a level of urgency that might even make them the favorite here, despite their ranking and recent woes. Wish I could be at this game.

I should add that this game has significance that goes far beyond the game of hockey and our petty little loyalties. A gopher win would prove that there is no God, at least not a loving one.

I'll be in C12 in either my maroon Gopher sweatshirt or my throwback Gopher jersey with the bee stripes.

I agree...with all of this. Especially the part about the gophers being desperate enough to really wanna grasp this opportunity, and the bit at the end.

However, the Mavs are cursed in the X. And that's not God, that's voodoo.

I'm really excited about this game tonight. I hope my drinks tonight are celebratory, not sorrow drowning. :o

I keep thinking, "0 for 7? We're due, right?" But then I realize Chicago Cub fans are always thinking "1908? We're due, right?"

MSUM has never had as good a team in recent years playing at the X as they have this season. The 2002-03 team with Joseph and Stevenson was the best Mav team I'd ever seen up to this point. But another o-fer on the stack tonight is just fine for me.;)

A longtime (42 years!) season ticket holder here also, with seats just off the red line in Section 19, and at the X they gave me Section 126, in the corner. Not complaining, but I do hope the Gophers are skating in that direction twice.

I'm dead center ice row 12 with the same seats back in Mankato. Maybe because the gophers are there every year they want the opposing fans to make sure they have good seats.

Re: North Star College Cup: Minnesota State, UMD, Minnesota & Bemidji State

Well, the lack of focus and energy for the Mavericks shouldn't be an issue tonight. This team is fired up and from what I know, they hate Minnesota the most.

Also, Bryce Gervais wasn't on the ice for morning skate. Don't know of any issues there, but something to keep an eye on.

The Gopher website lists both of today's games on FSN+.

Boy, with that kind of insight why even bother playing the game. They should just call it off and give MSU the win....

Would you like clarification? At practice this week, there was great energy and a repetitive theme that the Gophers are ready, and they better **** well be too. I'm sure Coach Hastings fears his team will be complacent with that little number 1 by their name. I don't believe complacency will be an issue tonight, and the team won't come out flat, etc.

Re: North Star College Cup: Minnesota State, UMD, Minnesota & Bemidji State

Pretty much every team hates Minnesota the most.

I'm sure corky's kids will be fired up and ready to play, this is the closest thing to a NC game they will get after all.

Oh and the other thread is better btw, this one is missing the smiley face.

Hey , c'mon now. Hate? How about, you like to play the Gophers the most, or you find your undies all bunched up when you lose ( repeatedly ) to the Gophers more so than other teams. We are all friends here, eh?:D

Re: North Star College Cup: Minnesota State, UMD, Minnesota & Bemidji State

If Gervais is out, advantage Gophers. :)
