North Star College Cup: Minnesota State, UMD, Minnesota & Bemidji State

Re: North Star College Cup: Minnesota State, UMD, Minnesota & Bemidji State

MSU looked like the better team tonight. Moreover, I don't have any positive or negative feelings for the Mavs or any other Gopher opponent anymore. This change has made me not care about anything it's sad because I used to have passion. I guess the only games I have cared about were the four games last year before the NCAA championship.

Thanks for leaving the WCHA UMD and UMN. You really hurt us.

Just got back from the X. Have to tell you that was one electric environment. Its really a Twin Cities vs. outstate MN rivalry now. It has become a hand me down final five. Was something to see.

Minnesota "hosts" the tournament. They are the only team in it every year.

Concert at the Roy Wilkins, Crashed ice, normal Winter Carnival activities (parade, ice sculptures, etc.), north star college cup.
Yes, downtown St. Paul will be very busy. At least the half marathon is Saturday morning when not much else is happening.

I thought there was something else going on, too, but I dunno for sure. Either way, I'm going nowhere near St Paul next weekend.

Nice to see there was 14,000 there, looked more full than last year. Hope it gets renewed.

Agreed. It was a great atmosphere and I'm glad I went, even though the result wasn't what I wanted to see. Fun time!

I can't believe no one has mentioned the brilliant/crazy play that Stephon made!

I agree with 5mn_major, it was electric! If you get a game like that every year this tournament will fill the place!

Williams is only good when he got his swagger, and if his swagger includes destroying the net as a way to stop play, more power to him.:)

Turnovers, D lapses in front, poor zone breakouts, poor puck support, poor passing, poor transition, average goaltending, not enough SOG and the list goes on...as the Gophers faltered in nearly every aspect of arguably their biggest game of their season tonight, losing 4-2 to an energized Mavericks team who played like they had something to prove. Mankato set the pace early and came storming out of the gate creating 12 grade A scoring chances in the first period alone vs only 2 for the Gophers. That trend would continue throughout the game as the Mavs kept the Gophers out of the paint denying shot opportunities on Williams all night with a heavy dose of forecheck and blocked shots.

Offensively, the Golden Gophers looked totally out of sync tonight, failing to setup with puck support in the Mavericks zone, and relying mainly on perimeter shots that were often blocked or deflected wide. Defensively, they allowed pucks to get behind them and surrendered the paint to the Mavs far too often and IMO that was the difference in the game.

The Mavs played like a #1 team tonight streaking up and down the ice with a good speed and transition game and were very physical on the walls. Bryce Gervais and Matt Leitner were the offensive stars of the game picking Wilcox's pocket, who was off his game. Boyd, Rau, Kloos, Fasching were Gopher players expected to step up and generate offense, but finished with only 5 SOG total. Ambroz had a chance to narrow the game to 4-3 with a penalty shot with 1:13 remaining, but made one of the worst looking dekes I've ever seen that probably drew a chuckle from Williams when made the routine stop.

Overall, the Mavs outplayed the Gophers all game tonight and are the obvious favorite to capture the North Star College Cup Championship tomorrow night. Meanwhile the Gophers will need to rebound quickly from their disappointing effort to face UMD tomorrow afternoon with a chance to gain a "little" traction in the PWR. As expected this loss dropped them further into the pairwise basement. A loss tomorrow will most likely ice their chances for a tournament berth unless they win the B1G tourney. Plain and simple the Gophers sucked tonight as a team.

No Mav's in my face. Beav's? Well, okay.;) Congrats to the two teams that deserved to win. Although I missed most of the first game, I missed none of the second. Mankato looks like a #1 team. The Gophers almost looked like they belonged for some portions of the second period, but were really outclassed all game otherwise. The atmosphere was great and attendance wasn't half bad either. But that penalty shot? I could have stopped that one.

I agree, MSU has a very good team. But I don't think that was the sole reason for the results. MN looked very disjointed in their play, even when not being pressured by MSU. MN's poor play was as much a factor as anything. I can't think of a team with so much talent and promise underperforming more (although the Wild is at almost the same level.)

You know I don't have a dog in this fight, but who in their right mind would have picked the two finalists today. Shocking. (And glad the tournament is a success. So many of them aren't.)
