North Star College Cup: Minnesota State, UMD, Minnesota & Bemidji State

Well, I am 8 years (not nearly as long as MavsFan), and I'm in the upper level for the 2nd year. Every Blue Line member I know is in the lower level and every non member I know is in the upper level.

I've heard several people mention that upper deck is unavailable. I've also tried to look for upper deck tickets on the ticket master site, and it doesn't find anything. What us the deal? Why are they not selling upper deck tickets if it is open? And past years the upper deck was open?

Makes you wonder why some season ticket holders were assigned seats in the upper level when they are not selling them to those just buying their tickets now.

I love betting against my team. If team wins, I'm happy. If team loses, I'm rich. Win-win. Thanks for the info, maybe I'll get around to opening an account and putting money on BSU for the win--payout seems well worth the risk.

Not that it matters, but I am a 21 yr. Gopher season ticket holder and have seats on the blue line at Mariucci. My seats at the X are in the lower level, but in a corner. How they do seating makes absolutely no sense whatsoever...

I'm sure corporate seating pushes season ticket holders to the corners and then upper level.

Is there a game by game breakdown of how ties will be broken should the games be tied at the end of regulation? On GPL a few posters were saying the championship will be continuous OT but I can't find anywhere that states that. Or any of the other games for that matter.

Re: North Star College Cup: Minnesota State, UMD, Minnesota & Bemidji State

I'm not a fan of that bet. -140 isn't that great. If it was -110 or something, maybe. Last year's games would have paid the under, but both teams are pretty productive offensively, and Wilcox has struggled recently.

True it's a little risky. I can see 3-3, OT and then you're screwed. There's a rivalry that's developed between these two teams over the years, and with so much at stake for the Gophers, really anything can happen. I can see the Gophers pulling off an upset.

There's been a fair share of low scoring Gopher/Mavs games though, which are often hard hitting, fast paced/good puck movement games. I would not be surprised to see some of those same ingredients in Friday's matchup. Tony Lucia had one of my favorite all time hits on a Mav player. Then there's the infamous Shack Attack and Corky blows a gasket video.

Can't find the press release (not even sure who would release it), but here's the always-reliable Shane Frederick with the Mankato paper http://mankatofreepresshockey.blogspot.com/2015/01/no-shootout-in-north-star-cup.html

Championship game only. The way I understand the PWR rules, this game then will either count as a win or loss, even if the game is decided past the 5:00 OT mark. As far as the NCAA is concerned, you can choose to play it out to the end, but then that becomes the final result. If I'm wrong on that, someone please school me on this.

I did see that too, in the Strib I believe. I also recall reading that if tied after a single OT the semi's will be decided by a shootout, same as in Big Ten play.

A longtime (42 years!) season ticket holder here also, with seats just off the red line in Section 19, and at the X they gave me Section 126, in the corner. Not complaining, but I do hope the Gophers are skating in that direction twice.

I understand that for the championship, but what about the night 1 games? If they are tied after 5 minutes of OT, will it be a tie? If so, how do they figure out who plays in the championship?

Shootout...

Re: North Star College Cup: Minnesota State, UMD, Minnesota & Bemidji State

So the UMD/BSU game is not on TV?

I was scrolling through the DirecTV guide last night and found it on one of the FSN alternate channels, maybe FSN+. I am hoping that is correct as I set it to record as I won't get home from work until around 5.

It was in Minnesota's game notes for this week: http://www.gophersports.com/sports/m-hockey/spec-rel/012115aaa.html

You're correct on how on extended OT game counts for PWR purposes.

Thanks! I hate shootouts, particularly in determining a cup winner, but I'm not sure I'm a fan of how the NCAA counts something like this for PWR purposes. If a team has played more than 65 minutes, with the increased chance of injury for a game that doesn't count towards a conference race, they should get something

Re: North Star College Cup: Minnesota State, UMD, Minnesota & Bemidji State

Just wanted to add that Fridays game between MSU and UM is available of BTN2go. I didn't see anything listed for Saturday. I would imagine with todays tech they could/would make the Minnesota game available after finding out what time it is happening... seeing as they just use the FSN feed for it.

Weekend preview from Gophersports

http://www.gophersports.com/sports/m-hockey/spec-rel/012115aaa.html

The No. 17 Gopher Hockey program returns to action this weekend with the second annual North Star College Cup presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota at Xcel Energy Center. Minnesota returns as the defending tournament champion from last year's inaugural event and looks to defend its title against the field of No. 1 Minnesota State, No. 7 Minnesota Duluth and Bemidji State.

Minnesota Duluth and Bemidji State open this year's event at 4:05 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 23 with Minnesota and Minnesota State following at 7:05 p.m. Both semifinals will be aired live on FOX Sports North PLUS. The consolation game is set for Saturday, Jan. 24 at 4:04 p.m. with the championship game following at 7:05 p.m. Both Saturday games will be aired live on FOX Sports North. Both Gopher games will also be streamed via BTN2Go with radio broadcasts on 1500 ESPN and the Gopher Radio Network.

North Star College Cup Rewind

Minnesota won the inaugural North Star College Cup last season in thrilling fashion after topping St. Cloud State 4-1 in the semifinal and then topping Minnesota Duluth in a shootout for the title (game officially went down as a 4-4 overtime tie). Adam Wilcox was named the inaugural North Star College Cup Most Valuable Player.

New Protocol for Title Game

While the first three games of the North Star College Cup will remain unchanged in overtime/shootout protocol (five-minute overtime session followed by a shootout), the championship game will move to the NCAA tournament format this year with 20-minute overtime periods occuring until a winner is decided.
