It always relied heavily upon Gopher fans to fill the arena, but when they're playing poorly the fans stay home just like most other teams. There aren't enough fans of the other schools in the area to really fill that the X, and they would never relocate it anywhere else because the money just wouldn't be there.

UMD looked very good. Solid team on all 3 fronts - offense, defense and in net. Their special teams are not special imho but that is not meant as a slam. They freaking owned the ice for the 2nd and much of the 3rd.

The dogs are great...they'll be in the mix at the end.
The gophers...well, have no illusions. We came back, but only after UMD thoroughly took over the game in the second.
There were a lot of fans in the stands last night. Filling up the X is not a cake walk.

Yesterday I talked to some people in the Minnesota athletic department about the hockey program. They had some interesting things to say about their department going forward. All of them said, Minnesota is now fully in on trying to make football bigger until all their older fans pass away. They don't care what hockey or basketball does just so both programs can break even. Don't look for many upgrades with either program unless they are privately funded. They can't give ads away for the hockey program or barely any ads for the basketball program. To make the Gophers more solvent young PJ Fleck will get his way while young Ricky and Lucia have some tough decisions in the days and years ahead. It sucks but I understand their reasoning.

It's the main reason the other schools agreed to a rotation for the NSCC that didn't just automatically rotate out the 4th place team.

So, why not move the tournament so that each team hosts once every five years? In the year that UMD, SCSU, MSM, BSU host, they play the Gophers in the first round, guaranteeing them 1 decent crowd. That also adds some novelty to the event locally, as its not in your area every year/might help sell tickets the year that it is hosted, since its a little different.

In the year that you are the team not in the tournament, you play a home and away game against the Gophers. Combined, that's 4 only non-conference slots on the Gophers schedule, they still have six others to fill, which should leave enough to schedule 2 games with NoDak, 2 with Denver/CC/Hockey East school, and 2 revenue/home against a smaller Atlantic or WCHA school.

I've got to say, FSN is pretty pathetic with this b.s. I got home just a while ago and turned on the tv and they have the *** replay of the third place game on instead of having the final championship game just because the gophers are not in it.

Minnesota college hockey is more than just the gophers.

What are you trying to say? That FSN went to all 3 non gopher teams and they somehow said nah, don't put us on tv unless we are play the gophers?

I'm saying, if your school is worth their salt, maybe they should try to negotiate. Don't blame the gophers if they are the only thing in Minnesota that draws eyeballs.
 
Look, I would have been annoyed but fine with FSN showing just the gophers games IF they didn't bother showing a replay of the thrid place game on the alternate feed instead of the title game. If anything I guess I should fault the gophers instead of FSN for the horrible coverage since I can't help but think the other 3 teams would have been reasonable to have there games against non gopher teams aired.

FSN has aired other UMD and SCSU games this season so it must have some interest in those games.

So either the gophers ego prevented other quality mn college hockey teams from getting coverage or FSN wasn't interested in the NSCC, just reliving the past when the gopher hockey was a bigger draw.

Box score shows 12,167. I'm guessing that's double the attendance of any other college game in the country last night.
This evening's game drew 11,098, not bad either.
I had a lot of fun both days, and am sad to see the tourney end.
