North Dakota's New Code of Fan Conduct

Re: North Dakota's New Code of Fan Conduct

For the historically inclined, the Minnesota - Wisconsin rivalry started in 19th century Europe!

Until 1905 Norway was part of Sweden. If I remember my US History correctly, Minnesota was heavily settled by Swedes while Wisconsin was heavily settled by Norwegians. Their dislike for each other goes back many generations, well before ice hockey was played at either state university.

Coz we got sick of Ole being made out to be the stupid one...

Re: North Dakota's New Code of Fan Conduct

Why didn't you like the outdoor venue? I have been to a few pond hockey championships and played in a few, sometimes the weather was a bear, but otherwise i liked em, but standing at a rink I can walk away from is alot different than sitting in bleachers.

I liked the outdoor game, once. In addition it was at Lambeau, which for us is kind of a holy site. The experience of watching a Badger hockey game at Lambeau with the ring of honor, green and gold and history all around was sweetly surreal.

The negatives were the bad sight lines, temperature and bad sight lines. Seriously felt like the hockey game was going on somewhere else and the banter and noise around me was what I was experiencing more than anything.

Again - still had fun, but it can't get any better than Lambeau (for me), so why spend the time and money on a novelty experience?

Did the Pond Hockey Championships in Eagle River once and the hockey was terrible but the guys' weekend away is legendary to this day. Let's just say that what happened in Eagle River at a certain backwoods, ahem, "gentlemen's" club, must forever stay in Eagle River. Never has a dollar gone so far...;);):D

Re: North Dakota's New Code of Fan Conduct

So let me get this straight, in your opinion the Sioux "die hards" think the UND/DU rivalry is greater than (bigger, more intense etc) than the UM/UND rivalry?

I dont even know where to begin with this, I'm sure in your opinion I'm "old" I'm 42, been a family season ticket holder for the Gophs since the days of sitting on moms lap at games, we've attended a minimum of 50% of the UND/UM series in ND and 75+% of them in MN, traveled to games across the country with a pretty large group on UND fans and I know those diehards (100% of them) would fully disagree with your assesment, and every UND fan I know would disagree with that notion and all of them are "diehards"..

No one gets up for a WCHA matchup like the UND/UM rivalry, wether its a down year or not.

I for one (and in the minority) am glad the rivalry is getting a breather because its gone to a whole new level this past decade. As an example a few years ago I brought my friends 10yr old kid to a game, a beer was tossed on him, the group from where it came from thought it was funny, he was harassed the entire game for cheering on the Gophers, and my car was keyed. Last year I asked him if he wanted to go up for the series and he very quickly said no and I think I heard him whisper a f-und under his breath.. Just this past weekend some friends I usually go up there with had many issues with fans up there.. I'm sure UND fans can say the same thing about visiting MN..

Imo, its run its course for awhile, the breather will make future matchups that much better.

First off, you're not that much older than me. Second, historically I would not disagree with you that UMN/UND rivalry is greater than DU/UND. Third, my point is that currently the DU/UND rivalry is bigger (again, for me, and honestly most other diehard UND fans that I know see it as equal to or greater than the UND/UMN rivalry). The two sides have played far more meaningful games over the last decade against each other than UND/UMN. That is not to say that the UND/UMN rivalry has been boring, it is definitely a strong second (or 1a/1b if you will) to the DU/UND rivalry. Finally, I disagree that a break in the rivalry will make it better in the future. If anything, it will make it weaker. If the sides don't play for say five years, you'll have almost an entire student body that has not experienced a UND/UMN series. On the other side of the coin, you'll have had nearly twenty matchups (perhaps more) between DU/UND in that same span of time. The DU/UND rivalry will grow stronger, and the UND/UMN rivalry will weaken (not that it will not be strong). Unfortunately, UND has had to experience losing a great rivarly when the NDSU/UND rivalry ended. While students would still be up for that series if it were to continue, it would take a long time to get that series back to what it was (or perhaps it would never regain its former glory). Again, this is all my opinion, but that is how I see it.

We all have our opinions, many UM fans think the UW/UM rivalry is bigger than the UND/UM rivalry, with that i disagree with also..

It's understandable, and in five years I'm sure most Gopher fans would agree that the UW/UM rivalry is bigger. It is what it is.

I love Lambeau, whats not to love about that place, even as a Minnesotan I think its the best of all places to see a sporting event, of any sport. So I can understand why you'd think thats the cream of the crop..

fkn joel maturi!

Re: North Dakota's New Code of Fan Conduct

@ 23, I forgot to mention.

When I work the UM/UND games in MPLS, (i've been able to do this thru the station for extra cash, its not considered a shift) Its the most visitied drunk tank of the month, by both fanbases (from my experiences).

Re: North Dakota's New Code of Fan Conduct

side note: fk the soldier field plan, why not have the outdoor matchup between the two programs host it at their house? ie 1 year in Madison, the next Mpls? I hate that spineless piece of crap Joel Maturi!!

If anyone involved with this has a half of brain they should also have Michigan v Mich St or fOSU. Turn it into a 2 game deal with lots of fans. And most importantly, allow tailgating.

I would buy my tickets today.

No love for rumor that Miami/ND are the other teams? We travel in droves I tell you. DROVES!

That would make ALOT more sense and split the overhead, hell make it into a huge big 10 shindig, its not like its a huge conference..

I wonder what the St. Paul drunk tank looks like after the Final Five on St. Patty's Day?

I worked it a couple times, it wasn't to bad. The issues I see more often are campus fights, drunk kids being drunk kids and DUI's when the Sioux come into town. Not saying its Sioux fans getting into trouble, both.

Re: North Dakota's New Code of Fan Conduct

NoDak fans though odd in appearance with their mullets, mall hair, bad teeth, large foreheads, squared jaws and shall we say "interesting" familial relationships can be fun, by and large.

Games at the Kohl Center are always an interesting contrast between the Nodak look you describe and Badger fans, who have little shrunken heads, beady eyes, stubby torsos and those hats with the little propellers on top. You might think that offspring from these two fanbases would be pretty normal, taking the best attributes from both, but that isn't the case. I know a mixed couple who dared to have children, and they shocking to look at--just shocking. I thought this was an isolated tragedy until a couple of years ago when I attended a game at Mariucci. They were everywhere.

Sort of a get to know ya party. In Chicago! Imagine, Gopher, Badger, Wolverine and Buckeye fans all tailgating one spot. Could be fun.

I'm sorry that you had to see that. I hope the therapy is helping. :D

Well, you guys haven't been able to win a Championship for those ten years, so who cares?

Re: North Dakota's New Code of Fan Conduct

Do you know if other schools have anything similar in place?

Cornell's athletics department has been enforcing a similar code for years. Our chants have been profanity free for a while now and the policy doesn't have any major impact on the atmosphere.
