North Dakota @ Denver: 2/24-2/25 - Let the Rivalry Renew!

Re: North Dakota @ Denver: 2/24-2/25 - Let the Rivalry Renew!

I'll bet over a third of the fans were North Dakota fans. And I think they were louder than the DU fans.

Agreed. There weren't as many Sioux fans as in past seasons, but we still made a bunch of noise. Add the fact that North Dakota came out on fire, and a lot of DU fans were sitting on their hands, which made it pretty one sided. By the time DU got back into it in the final minute, most of the Denver fans had left Magness.

Either way, here were my thoughts on the game...

The opening ten minutes were probably the best UND has played all season. The SOG were something like 14-1 midway through the first, and if it were not for Brittain, it could have easily been 2 or 3-0 instead of just the 1-0 score.

Denver turned it around in the final minute or so of the first, and carried that momentum through into the second. Prior to Kristo's penalty shot, it was all Denver, as the Pioneers outshot the Sioux about 10-1. That being said, DU did not get a lot of great chances, but if one of those had gone in, it would have been a completely different game.

The officiating was inconsistent. Lee from DU could do nothing without getting sent to the box. I was on the opposite side from the major penalty, but it did not look like contact to the head (and I believe there is video that shows this as well). I think the violence of the collision was what resulted in a 5, and I was okay with that. I think officials should have some discretion when dealing out majors, but that one just didn't seem like a 5 to me. Overall though, I felt like the officials did a good job of not "officiating the score" which we see all too often in the WCHA. They let the players play for the most part, but then randomly decided to call stuff. That kind of officiating has to be frustrating for everyone on the ice.

North Dakota came out in the third period and played well. The two goals (Rowney and Pattyn) were set up beautifully by the Sioux. Give the Pioneers credit for coming back. Their first goal was very nice, and Eidsness needs to do a bit better job on that second goal. The Zucker goal was ridiculous. The Sioux have had big time issues with faceoffs all season, and it killed them again last night. I'm not sure how many goals they have given up in the 5 or so seconds following a draw this season, but it has been far too many.

It will be interesting to see how the momentum Denver built up at the end of the game last night carries over into this evening. If Denver comes out strong and can get a 1-0 or 2-0 lead, I think the Sioux will wilt, and it could get ugly. Hopefully the extra day at altitude will help the guys tonight. The Sioux haven't swept in Denver since November of 2003, and I certainly don't expect it to happen again tonight. However, if they can get strong goaltending, good defense, and timely scoring, they will have a chance, and that is all you can ever really ask for on a Saturday for the road team.

It is on Root Sports (formerly Fox Sports - Rocky Mountain). Game starts at 7:07 mountain.

EDIT: If you have DirecTV, the game is on 658-1 (HD)/658 (SD), which I believe is an alternate channel. It is also on Root Sports, which is 683 on DirecTV.

Re: North Dakota @ Denver: 2/24-2/25 - Let the Rivalry Renew!

Sad to say UND was the better team last night.
PWR UND tied for 9th; DU tied for 13th.
Need to reverse that tonite with a Pio win.

Re: North Dakota @ Denver: 2/24-2/25 - Let the Rivalry Renew!

Stupid basketball. TV coverage doesn't start until 7:00 here - an hour after the game starts, and I'm sure will be delayed if the bouncyball game goes long. Anybody know if the DU website will carry the game? I don't have premium on the UND website and don't want to get it for basically one period.

Watched the game on NBC and the announcers seemed almost like homers for UND. They were very impressed with the turnout from UND and announced that UND travels well. Was very suprised at UND's fast start. Would have thought that after UND ended Denver's season last year Denver would have come out with a vengence. Game almost seemed like the coaches had different strategies for the tempo of the game UND came out hard Denver was soft on the puck at first but towards end of periods it seemed that Denver had more energy. Looked like UND either ran out of gas late in the third or they had a different style of play at the end. Looked as if they played like they thought the game was all wrapped up and they just wanted to ice the puck. Kind of reminded me when football teams play the prevent defense at the end of a game.

Regarding the major penalty. NBC did a good job with their analysis of the contact, one of the analysts had experience officiating games. He was critical of the major penalty and mentioned that the initial contact was below the head but his hand may have moved up. That at most it should have been a 2 minute call. He also mentioned he would love to be on the ice on a game like this. Mentioned that officiating a game like this was controlled mayhem. NBC cameras did a good job of catching the Sioux player breaking his stick in the tunnel after being ejected for the bad call. NBC had lots of good things to say about Blood and Kristo. Mentioned that UND fans should enjoy watching Kristo now because he won't be back next year. Showed replays of a Kristo's assist and some of his stick handling. Also had good things to say about Forbort, they replayed one of Forbort's defensive plays and explained that that is a big time NHL move and the proper way to seal off an opponent. Then later, on a Denver penalty, they explained that is how not to seal off the opponent, and then replayed Forbort's defensiive play as a textbook example of how it should be done.

Overall I think NBC is a big improvement over FOX. The NBC analysts made the game much more interesting.

They need a lesson on how to pronounce Gwozdecky. Overall NBC does a solid job with the broadcasts.

George Swadeckee....over and over. That was amusing. I agree with you on the coverage by NBC. I have seen a few games this year on NBC and been very impressed. It all seems so, um, professional. Not to mention how nice it was for me to switch over to the NoDak/ Denver game after the Minnesota/ Omaha game.

Not to mention it's in High Def AND there is a penalty clock right on the screen!

After Sam got pulled there was one player standing on the bench--him. It will be interesting to see if the Pios bounce back and salvage the weekend. Hats off to the Sioux for a solid road win.

Thought Denver goalie had a good game not sure why he was pulled. Maybe he was the only Denver player that was overworked at that point in the game and deserved a rest.:D

The end of Patrick Roy's career as a Montreal Canadien comes to mind. :)

According to the schedule on fightingsioux.com, the game is also on FSN North Plus, Comcast (St. Paul) channel 13 or 23, 694 (HD). Confirmed on the event listings for FSN North Plus as well.

GO SIOUX!!!

Re: North Dakota @ Denver: 2/24-2/25 - Let the Rivalry Renew!

Pios bounce back and play a solid Saturday night game. Much better with the puck in all areas. Less penalties. Pios special teams was the difference. Girls had two five minute PP's and drew the doughnut with a shorty glaze. :D BS call of the weekend was the gamer to Joey. Blood had no business being where he was. Should have been off setting minors. Interesting that these two teams stacked with oodles of talent are on the bubble. Should be an exciting next couple of weeks. Denver needs to sweep next four games to control their own destiny. Sweeping in Omaha is a tall order-especially with UNO fighting to keep home ice.

Gophs sweep of the Mavs was the first in Omaha in three years. Like I said a tall order for the Pios next weekend. Can you say game face?

Good game, DU. They did what they absolutely had to do, and that has its own kind of pressure.
