NMU Wildcats 2015-2016 Season Thread

Sawyer International Airport was formerly an Air Force Base.

Yeah, too bad with budget cuts back in the day they closed the AFB. That was devastating to Marquette county's economy. Now the Gwinn area is in tough shape and has no jobs that were once provided. They should have closed an AFB someplace else in the country. Now the closest is near Milwaukee.

I'm sure that logistics costs were higher in MQT, and it's not like that Canadian border is hard to defend. It stinks when they go, though.

Anybody know when the WCHA/NMU releases their tentative schedules for this season? I'm aware of the Wisconsin, UNO and Florida series already.

My buddies and I are looking to take a longer NMU hockey trip this season, aka, outside the UP. Preferably within 8-12 hour driving distance, so not Alabama, Akaska or of course, Estero, FL. We don't want to do Green Bay either because of the Packers conflict. I've been to Ewigleben once, but not for a game. Reccomendations welcome!

No release date has been announced, but I expect the NMU schedule will be announced within the next 2 weeks.

Re: NMU Wildcats 2015-2016 Season Thread

The 2015-16 NMU Hockey Team had (30) players on the roster last season.... I'm pretty sure NCAA D1 Men's Hockey programs have (18) full-ride scholarships available each season.... I'm also pretty sure that NCAA D1 Men's Hockey teams can only dress (20) players for each game.... Davyd83 could probably verify this info.... NMU loses (8) Seniors from the 2015-16 team and has signed (6) new Freshman recruits coming in so that means the 2016-17 NMU Hockey team will have 28 players on the roster as of now going into the season unless Walt brings in a few more players.... I heard the 2015-16 NMU Club Hockey MVP/Leading scorer is attempting to walk-on with the NMU D1 Varsity Hockey team this season.... It will be interesting to see if Walt gives him a shot....

I was told Breaker's Roadhouse in Marquette is a good place to go to for NMU Hockey banter & discussions about the program....

The fact that the club player couldn't make an NAHL roster and could only cracked the lowly regarded Tier II NOJHL for five games wouldn't lead one to believe he would see ice time at the D-1 level. There is a huge difference between ACHA Division 2 & NCAA Division I.

Each team has 18 scholarships. They can be divided up any way a team sees fit, whether partials or full. Teams dress 20 players, plus a 3rd goalie at home. A team may travel a max of 22 for WCHA games.

Come down to the Bowling Green area if NMU plays there this season. Nice town - good bar/restaurants, and Toledo isn't far away if you're looking for something to do during the day.

Re: NMU Wildcats 2015-2016 Season Thread

Back to back home-and-home sets with LSSU? Interesting. My buddies and I are debating Bowling Green or Mankato in February. Again reccomendations appreciated.

Re: NMU Wildcats 2015-2016 Season Thread

Yeah. Back to back weekends against LSSU. I believe the first weekend falls on NMU and LSSU's winter break. On the road for opening weekend of deer season (good!). I think the final weekend and first round bookend NMU's spring break. Without being able to check on mobile, I can't tell for sure.

Also interesting is the FOUR games against Wisconsin. Does this end NMU and Wisco's non-con agreement?

And, both January and February games against the Alaska's will be interesting. Potentially the final time either team could skate in Marquette.

Plus, it's the 40th anniversary of the program. And 25th anniversary for the championship. Hopefully the university has big things planned.

NMU vs LSSU playing back to back series games in 2016-17 is unusual to say the least!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: NMU Wildcats 2015-2016 Season Thread

MTU did play four straight games against Ferris last year; obviously it wasn't home/home games. Will be interesting to see how both teams react to each other come game four!

The double was likely caused by having to compact the schedule due to the playoff change.

I believe there will be one more NMU v Wisconsin next year at Green Bay. The contract was accelerated as both teams had the open weekend in November.

Re: NMU Wildcats 2015-2016 Season Thread

Of course it depends how the games go but this could be very intense. Sometimes wish the NHL would play some regular season games back to back.
