NMU Wildcats 2015-2016 Season Thread

NMU Hockey Adds (3) Recruits For 2016-17

Darien Craighead
Surrey, B.C. | Chilliwack (BCHL) | Forward | 6'1" 170lbs

Collin Peters
Sheboygan, Wis. | Lincoln (USHL) | Forward | 6'0" 165lbs

Rylan Yaremko
Spirit River, Alta. | West Kelowna (BCHL) | Defenseman | 6'3" 205lbs
I got to meet Peters and talk to his coaches and see him play. He's got an opportunity to be a very good player. Terrific kid who has Calumet roots and his grandparents live in Marquette. The reports on Craighead have been very good to start and I have gotten even better as the season has progressed. Yaremko should compete for playing time as a freshman.

http://www.thenorthwindonline.com/athletic-facilities-seek-future-upgrades/ Interesting article from the North Wind regarding athletics facilities. Brings up sharing the BEC between hockey and basketball as well as a video board possibility.

Interesting. Thanks for the link.

My comments:
Karr said moving the men’s and women’s basketball teams from the Berry Events center to Vandament arena in the PIEF is an option they’ve began exploring.
Have things changed regarding NCAA gymnasium height requirements? Or are they looking at remodeling/adding on to Vandament? I personally know that thirteen years ago a study was done and Vandement was too short to move basketball into at the time. It was okay for practices though. There were preliminary sketches done at the same time for a new addition on the East side of the Berry/PIEF for a new basketball only facility.

NMU is one of the only WCHA teams that does not operate with a jumbotron. Michigan Tech improved their arena in 2013, while Lake Superior State has yet to add one as well.
One of the only, then they state LSSU doesn't either. Well, neither does Ferris State or Bowling Green. A video board is much needed at NMU, but it's the same chatter that has been made regarding one for, again, almost 13 years.

We are closing in on the 20th anniversary of the Berry, and not much has changed since it opened. Only a fresh coat of paint on the inside just last year.

While I do like the "big ice," and really love the openness that it brings to the game, I'm beginning to wonder what the benefits are for NMU not looking at retrofitting the Berry to be slightly smaller now that speed skating is no longer part of the USOEC (which was one of the many reasons to build of the Berry instead of remodeling Lakeview AND adding a speed skating rink to the PIEF). Yes, I am well aware that $$$ is the number one problem, but, reading through that article reads more as a wishlist anyway than an actual capital improvement timeline.

Nice to see them dust off the plans from over a decade ago and start talking about improvements to the athletic venues though.

Walt Kyle said he's bringing in (3) more recruits before the 2016-17 season!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm guessing the three recruits with 95 birthdates. Voltin, Hannoun, and Heikkila. I know Hannoun and Heikkila both had NCAA clearinghouse issues at one point so not sure what their status is.

Re: NMU Wildcats 2015-2016 Season Thread

I drank many "Cool Ones" in the "Donor's Room" bar at Lakeview Arena during the NMU Hockey games when they played there back in the 70's, 80's & 90's thus my USCHO moniker "DonorRoomDrinker".... A great place to tip a few before & during the NMU Hockey games.... If Lakeview Arena wins the Kraft contest it will be unreal for Marquette to get $150,000 renovation money for Lakeview and also unreal for Marquette to host a televised NHL Pre-season game.... This would be a huge boost for Marquette Hockey & NMU Hockey!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really hope Lakeview can win it. When I saw the initial field had Lake Placid in it, I wasn't so sure, but you will be surprised. Hope the Soo can get another shot at it someday.

As working media, all he'd be able to give is his opinion. No coach is going to speculate on October's lineup in April.

GFM

Darrien Craighead and Collin Peters will definitely see a lot of ice time as Freshmen. And don't forget Troy Loggins.

Congratulations to Lakeview Arena! Just saw the scroll at the bottom of the TV screen that it won Kraft Hockeyville contest. More info on TV 6 late news at 11:00.

Went to the watch party. Nice to see a lot of the NMU players in attendance. What a great experience for Marquette and Lakeview!
