NMU Wildcats 2015-2016 Season Thread

Re: NMU Wildcats 2015-2016 Season Thread

The Hanson-Shine-Nowick line is clearly the key. When they're on their game, they could very well be the best line in the WCHA.

I thought NMU actually played well in a lot of stretches against Tech, but got zero bounces to help. Combine that with missing Nowick for the majority of Friday night's game and the line juggling thanks to a rash of penalties, and no one was able to really get going to help. Players like Payne, Siemer and Sooth really need to step up as a secondary scoring threat against Ferris to take some of the pressure off the top line. And if the penalty parade continues (which you'd expect from both teams for a game in Big Rapids) that's going to make it very difficult especially if the PK is as putrid as it was on Saturday.

Dahlstrom/Tolvanen >> Smith

Now can NMU build from the net out and win the battles in the dirty areas? FSU plays a totally different game in their own building with all the home-run passes up the middle and the chips off the high glass, it's up to the coaching staff to point out how well NMU dealt with that in their win at Ewigleben a month or so ago.

Re: NMU Wildcats 2015-2016 Season Thread

The end is near for the 2015-16 NMU Hockey team after last nite's (3-2) loss to Ferris State in the first round of the WCHA Playoffs.... Unless a miracle happens and they win on Saturday & Sunday it will be time to hang up the skates and end another losing season at NMU making it 4 losing seasons in a row and 5 out of the last 6.... The days of NMU being a Pairwise Top 20 ranked team and making the NCAA Tournament seem to be out of reach these days!!!!!!!!!!!!

NMU Hockey Last 6 Seasons
2015-16 (15-15-7)
2014-15 (14-18-6)
2013-14 (15-21-2)
2012-13 (15-19-4)
2011-12 (17-14-6)
2010-11 (15-19-5)

Re: NMU Wildcats 2015-2016 Season Thread

Interesting lineup changes for tonight. Dahlstrom was the starter last night, is the 3rd goalie tonight.

Re: NMU Wildcats 2015-2016 Season Thread

Another early exit for the NMU Men's Hockey team getting swept at Ferris State (3-2 & 5-2) in the WCHA Playoffs this weekend ending their season at (15-16-7).... Will they ever get back to the NCAA's again???? At least the NMU Women's Club Hockey team provided some excitement for NMU Hockey fans this year as they made it to the 2015-16 ACHA National Semifinals where they lost (3-2) in OT on Saturday.... The NMU Women's Club Hockey team ended the year with a (25-8-0) record.... Some NMU hockey fans are wondering if the NMU Women's Club team will make the jump up to NCAA D1 in the near future after being successful at the Club level.... The Penn State Men's Club Hockey program made the jump up and have had success playing NCAA D1 Hockey going (20-12-4) this year....

They will never make the jump. The skill at their club level is not near what's needed at the D1 level. Union would dominate them.

Where does the funding come from to move women's hockey from D2 Club to D1 NCAA? The NMU women club team has one NCAA D1 caliber player on their roster. Second, Penn State's club team doc not jump to NCAA D-1. That club program is still there. There were only a couple players who had played for the Varsity team when it played its first Big Ten game. The club program was used as a place for Gadowsky's incoming recruit to skate wile they built the foundation of a varsity program.

Drive-by post.

This.

Here at Adrian College, our D-1 women's Club team lost in the national semis, and they were top-3 most of the season. They wouldn't lay a glove on our D-3 varsity team. Their talent level is on par with a mid-to-low end D-3 varsity team. NMU's D-2 club team, frankly, would get embarrassed on the D-1 varsity level. The depth past the 1st or 2nd line simply isn't there to compete.

Good feedback concerning the NMU Women's Club Hockey team.... There has been lots of talk around Marquette this year about the success of the NMU Women's Club Hockey team and many in town have wondered if NMU would try to elevate the program to the NCAA D1 level so that's why I brought the subject up here on the NMU Men's Hockey thread.... Some good replies and opinions!!!!!!!!!!!

I used Union college as an example as their women's hockey team did not win a game this year, broke wrinkles steak record, which they previously owned and I personally know how good two of their players are. I also happen to know exactly how good several of the NMU players are.

Also had a discussion with another college AD that I believe has better funding than NMU and they wouldn't touch it without several million additional funding.

Re: NMU Wildcats 2015-2016 Season Thread

NMU recently added NCAA D2 Men's Soccer, NCAA D2 Men's Swimming & Diving & NCAA D2 Women's Lacrosse to their NCAA D2 sports programs so why not Women's Hockey???? There's been lots of positive talk around Marquette for NMU having a NCAA women's hockey team so at least the community seems to be supportive of NMU doing this.... I agree with Davyd83 that funding a NMU women's hockey program would be an issue but at least it's being talked about around town and there seems to be lots of interest.... Minnesota-Duluth is a D2 college that has a very successful NCAA women's D1 hockey program so why can't NMU do the same????

From the point of offering women's hockey whether NMU is a D2 college or not doesn't matter. There are D3 colleges that offer D1 women's hockey. It's just a matter of money. It has NOTHING to do with the club team nothing.

UMD is not a good example as that time in women's hockey has changed. They were successful because their previous coach hand picked many foreign olympic players and you only needed a few to dominate. That time has passed, as has UMD success.

There is a huge difference in the cost of D-1 women's hockey and D-2 LaCrosse. One item to note: the previous Women's hockey coach who brought them to national prominence had a salary in excess of $200,000 in 2014-15. Now that was the top in the country, but John Harrington at Minnesota State, Eric Rud at St Cloud and (former NMU men's assistant) Jim Scanlan at Bemidji are all in the neighborhood of $100,000.
Let's get our men's program funded at a proper level first!

On another note: What does Davyd83 think about the St. Norbert Men's Hockey program and all the success they've had and what does he think about the job St. Norbert Men's Hockey head coach Tim Coghlin has done there???? Coghlin’s teams have compiled a 484-128-49 record in his 22 seasons at St. Norbert. During that time, St. Norbert is 246-68-30 mark in the NCHA, the best tenure in league history in terms of winning percentage.

St. Norbert has appeared in 15 NCAA Division III Tournaments since 1997, highlighted by its national championships in 2008, 2011, 2012 and 2014. The Green Knights have made nine Frozen Four appearances, and placed as national runner-up in 2004, 2006 and 2010. Coghlin’s seven national title game appearances as a head coach is the second-most in NCAA Division III history. Over the past 18 seasons, St. Norbert has registered an outstanding 431-86-39 record.

Coghlin is a Canadian from Summerland, British Columbia and he's put St. Norbert on the college hockey map with some great D3 college hockey teams playing in DePere these days.

Tim's a first rate coach and a first rate guy as well. I first met him when he played at UW-Stevens Point for Mark Mazzoleni. He was nearly named coach at Alaska-Fairbanks several years back, but opted to wait until the St. Norbert season was completed before signing. He may have gotten that from his coach, Mazzoleni, who was high on Michigan Tech's list in the late 80s, but refused to consider an offer until UWSPs season ended.

You would be hard pressed to find anyone in the game who doesn't have a lot of respect for Tim.

I may head down to Green Bay this weekend and catch St Norbert's NCAA Tourney game on Saturday and the Gamblers on Sunday!

Re: NMU Wildcats 2015-2016 Season Thread

I used to live in Green Bay so I went to all the St. Norbert Men's Hockey games at the Cornerstone.... St. Norbert's also has a Women's D3 hockey team and had (5) U.P. players on the roster this year (all from the Copper Country).... The St. Norbert Women's hockey team went (15-9-4) this year in 2015-16....

Great men's hockey tradition there. Always wondered if they would/could have gone D1. I believe they have the money and for sure have the following.

On 10/2014 St Norbert men hockey team played Wisky in a "glorified scrimmage" that locked out the public. End result 3-3, was that a precursor to Wisky as we know them now?

As to the girls team, I've watched those girls for the last 10(?) years play and grow in the game. Some potentially D1 quality but in the women's game if you are not playing AAA no coach will see you. It's I believe a major flaw in women's hockey in general for growing the game and even worse in Michigan.

St Norbert has been a draw for UP athletes for quite some time in several sports.

Re: NMU Wildcats 2015-2016 Season Thread

Another topic of discussion that has been talked about is why doesn't UWGB have a NCAA D1 Men's Hockey program and play at The Resch Center.... It would seem they would be able to have a good fan base with the successes of St. Norbert D3 Hockey & Green Bay Gamblers Junior Hockey.... You would think UWGB could sustain a viable D1 Hockey program with all the hockey fans in the GB area plus they would have natural regional rivalries with Wisconsin, NMU, MTU, LSSU, Mankato, Minnesota, St. Cloud, UMD, Bemidji State, etc, etc, etc....
