NMU Wildcats 2015-2016 Season Thread

I'm still trying to figure out why NMU Junior Forward Sami Salminen (6'4" 225lbs) was a healthy scratch in Saturday's game against LSSU.... You would think Walt would play his top guys at this point of the season.... Didn't hear why this was done.... Maybe Davyd83 would have some inside information for us????

Coach said in his pregame interview on Saturday that he wanted to get some more speed in the lineup and also wanted to get Sami a break since he's played every game after coming off a lenthy stay on the injured list.

Re: NMU Wildcats 2015-2016 Season Thread

Salminen must have been discouraged not to be in the lineup on Saturday nite since the game was very important and had playoff inplications....

Is there a chance Dahlstrom could return next season considering he redshirted his Freshman year? I'm not quite clear on how the redshirt process works.

Is he getting his degree this Spring? If so, it doesn't seem likely he would return even though he has another year of eligibility.

He doesn't have another year. He just turned 25 on Friday.

If you need any more reason to be excited about this weekend, Alex Petan and Dominik Shine are 1st and 2nd in the league in scoring. Shine trails Petan by 1 point.

Tech fighting for the MacNaughton, NMU fighting for home ice, and the two Hobey Baker candidates going neck and neck in the scoring race.

Lots to be excited about! Hope students and the public come on out both nights.

NMU lays a "Goose Egg" tonite with (4-0) loss to MTU in Houghton.... John Siemer & Sami Salminen don't dress.... NMU is now (15-13-7).... Ferris State beat LSSU (3-1) and is now in 4th place with (30) points while NMU drops to 5th place with (29) points for home ice in the 1st round of the WCHA Playoffs....

Dave, strategy question. On the five minute major to Nowick, Mark Evans mentioned that NMU would be down two players (Nowick with the gate, Pierce serving the penalty). Technically correct; but does the NCAA allow Walt to leave the box empty during the PP? I've seen it done at the USHL and AHL levels, but was unsure what the NCAA's rules were.

I know it's a gamble by the coach that he's going to get a whistle sometime close to the end of the penalty so he can get someone to serve the remainder of the penalty, otherwise the offending team must continue to play shorthanded after the penalty expires until the next whistle.

But just wondering if there was something that would have prevented the option. Obviously it worked out last night because there was only one stoppage early in the five minute major, and not another stoppage in play until well over a minute after the penalty expired.

Someone has to serve the whole penalty.

What a ****ing embarrassing weekend. First time the 'Cats were shutout in Houghton in team history on Friday night. And then we allow MTU their first 5x3 goal all ****ing season.

Waste of $10, but I'm really glad my WCHA.tv feed sh** the bed before the 'Cats did so I didn't see this debacle.

MTU sweeps NMU (4-0 & 5-1) this weekend.... 1 goal on the weekend for NMU.... NMU is now (15-14-7) and is at Ferris State (15-14-6) next weekend in 1st round of 2015-16 WCHA Playoffs.... Hopefully NMU can pull a rabbit out of their hat and win the series.... NMU Hockey has had (3) losing seasons in a row coming into the 2015-16 year....

Last Three NMU Hockey Seasons
2014-15 (14-18-6)
2013-14 (15-21-2)
2012-13 (15-19-4)

Re: NMU Wildcats 2015-2016 Season Thread

I've thought long and hard about what I want to put here... We're looking at the 2nd worst 4-year stretch in this program's history... This is happening in a time where NMU is in the weakest conference they've ever been in... There should be results but they just aren't there... It's getting very difficult to find the motivation to tune in on Friday/Saturday nights and actually care what happens... All levels of the program (performance and administrative) seem to be failing...

I've bled Green and Gold for the last 12 years, but unless something good happens in the next few weeks, I really think I might not give a s*** in the future... I'm still trying to convince myself that this is not the case, but I'm having a difficult time looking in another direction :(

Re: NMU Wildcats 2015-2016 Season Thread

You know I've seen NMU three times this year and you played quite well this last weekend. I thought overall you outplayed Tech for long periods and really had some bad luck not scoring more. In the Michigan game you were definitely in it and played them pretty much even.
so there's that.....

Good luck against Ferris.

Re: NMU Wildcats 2015-2016 Season Thread

Alright. The results still suck, but... This is a team that went 8-4-0 from January 1st until the LSSU weekend, earning two weekend sweeps in the process.

Then the slide started at LSSU.

This team knows how to win. We've seen it. They've seen it. They can get the job done. Now is the time where they have to get back on that 8-4-0 run. They're playing for the Broadmoor. They're playing for pride of campus. And the seniors are playing for a potential paycheck next year in the sport they've loved so far. And wouldn't it be nice to face Tech and/or Bowling Green in Grand Rapids, beat them, and make them just miss the PWR cutoff?

Re: NMU Wildcats 2015-2016 Season Thread

The NMU Hockey team's offense completely disappeared this past weekend in the (4-0 & 5-1) sweep losses to MTU only scoring (1) goal all weekend.... You won't win too many games with that kind of offensive output so unless NMU gets their sticks & heads out of their asses the same thing could happen again this weekend vs Ferris State and it will then be a long season-ending bus ride back to Marquette.... I'm not too optimistic about the series with FSU this weekend after last weekend's debacle....

Re: NMU Wildcats 2015-2016 Season Thread

I attended Northern from 84-88. Things were pretty lean back in those days, and I remember coming back to campus after graduation to see my first home playoff series, I think was 1989. That said, I think as a Northern Fan and alumnus I am okay with the fact that we are not always going to put a championship team out there, but every so often we should be able to contend. Every year it seems to be the same thing: some hope is offered but disappointment prevails. I don’t know. I don’t want to bash Walt or anything, but you have to start asking the question. The team looked pretty good against Michigan (that I saw on TV), but that’s a pretty big egg to lay with Tech.
Just saying…
