NMU Wildcat 2011 Offseason

Re: NMU Wildcat 2011 Offseason

So, with the impending leaving of the Big Ten Schools from the CCHA, what is NMU doing to help promote itself and its sports programs? If I was you guys, I would hope that somebody at NMU has put together a fairly slick package like THIS to help market themselves across the UP.

No. As long as NMU is partnered with Marquette General, TV6, and Eagle Radio...There really isnt much else up there :P Its not like Marquette is a HUGE market. In fact, I think Marquette is ranked last in the FCC TV markets.

Besides, you are expecting NMU to do something. Cat Chat asked them to put up a link (the school apparently cant embed videos) the Justin Florek interview, and declined by saying he was "wearing a USA Hockey shirt, which is not approved clothing to be posted on the NMU site."

Re: NMU Wildcat 2011 Offseason

Marqette is the 180th market out of 210 Nielson Designated Broadcast Areas, putting them ahead of such markets asLafayette, IN, Eureka, San Angelo, Mankato, Fairbanks, Juneau, and Glendive, MT. :p

Second, the USA Hockey shirt seems to fall under their strict enforcement of the brand/marketing. They're very strict when it comes to that. Ever noticed how you could never tell what brand of clothing anyone was wearing on the front page? Cat Chat can post whatever they want (ie: their own video of Florek wearing whatever he wanted) since they're not hosted on NMU's website, but the NMU official website is sticklers.

... not sure how I have never been told to stop the NMU Baseball website... ;)

And getting back to Monster's post. The University is in a budget crunch, so they really can't "spend money to make money," but that's what they're going to have to do very soon. I've e-mailed off ideas (that can be done relatively cheap) utilizing already existent on campus departments, and they're met with a "we'll look into it," never to be implemented.

Would it really kill the budget to post a billboard or two promoting our only Division 1 sport? Utilize our on campus TV station for more than just highlights once a week?* The marketing tools are already in place... the people who can utilize them need to be put in place next.

* What's sad is that Public Eye News used to be a better source for Wildcat Sports than TV6 and ABC10 combined.

Well, clearly NMU doesn't need a marketing plan that's as slick as what GVSU has going on. But I'm sure you guys would all agree that it would be a fairly good idea to try to work towards having something near that level. They would have to spread it around, to Traverse City and maybe even hit Green Bay a little bit as well, but they should be able to fill inNMU does have a great barn of the one's in the CCHA I've seen. Yost would just be a dump if it wasn't for their rabid fanbase and banners, and the E in Big Rapids really ain't much to write about. Working a little harder to market NMU would be good for the whole sports department.

Re: NMU Wildcat 2011 Offseason

Off the current subject but looking at the 11-12 schedule today I see there's no exhibition to start the season. It looks like the Cats go to Madison untested. They do have an exhibition against a Russian team at the Berry December 30.

Aren't the alumni in town? Hit them up.

There's a TBA listed for October 2nd. I wouldn't be surprised if it were against Lakehead; they are playing MTU on the 1st.

Re: NMU Wildcat 2011 Offseason

Seeing as its only a couple weeks away, any word on who's attending NHL camps, besides Florek with Boston?

Re: NMU Wildcat 2011 Offseason

Pretty low key weekend events, but the public is certainly invited to the Upfront and Co. this Friday night to meet with some former players (including a few guys from the '91 team) and former staff. From 5pm till 9pm.

Also, the following guys have been invited to NHL prospects camp within the next few weeks:
Florek - Boston Bruins
Follmer, Cherniwchan - Washington Capitals
Coreau - New York Rangers
Gron - Edmonton Oilers
Epp - Philadelphia Flyers (was also shown interest by the Capitals)

They're not looking to poach, this is more to see if these guys could develop into NHL'ers, or at least AHL'ers with a shot at more in a few years.

*edit* Alumnus Gregor Hanson also at Rangers camp.

I don't know if I agree with the anti-CCHA sentiment riding this thread. Personally, I'm excited for a conference without the traditional powers. At least Northern, with their limited funds, will have a better chance at winning conference titles and making NCAA bids...you know, actually being relevant on the big stage again. People are overlooking the recruiting draw of Walt has as well.

Re: NMU Wildcat 2011 Offseason

If those remaining teams in the CCHA can't attract fans due to no longer playing the traditional powers, there won't be enough teams left in the CCHA to earn the automatic qualifier to make the NCAA Tourney.

Re: NMU Wildcat 2011 Offseason

What now? We can't stay in the ccha any longer.

Well, with the way things are right now for 2013...we still have an auto bid. But with Western and Notre Dame rumored to be on the move, the auto bid will be gone.

Re: NMU Wildcat 2011 Offseason

We're all together in this giant pile of **** that UND, DU and the B1G mistake left us in. I think the way to go is to bring LSSU, UA and NMU into the remains of the WCHA to make a conference of 8. While FSU, BGSU and UAH join up with the western AHA teams that don't want the scholarship limit to get to the minimum for an autobid.

Re: NMU Wildcat 2011 Offseason

I kinda like that thought. Not sure how having both Alaskan schools in one conference would work though. The other schools would need to talk them into continuing to pay to fly up there.

Definetly makes the most sense travelwise.

Hopefully with only an 8 team conference you could have flexible enough scheduling to guarantee only one trip to AK per year.

Yep. Like JB said in the cluster* thread:
Go for the 2 autobids out of the gate.
NEW WCHA
SCSU, MSU-M, BSU, NMU, MTU, LSSU, UAA, UAF, (if Alaska teams continue to cover travel) Maybe some sort of travel partner thing. If MSU-Moorhead goes Div 1 bounce an Alaska school to the CCHA.

NEW CCHA
BGSU, FSU, UAH, NU, RIT, Robert Morris (I think I picked 3 AH teams wanting to spend.) If an Alaska school comes in pull another AH team that wants to spend. This actually fixes a current Atlantic Hockey problem

The idea is to maximize NCAA tournament exposure with the existing league autobids. If you go east-west format you only keep the one bid of the 2 you already have. The bonus is to stick it to the BTHC and BHHC by consuming slots these “small” schools used to have a hard time getting.

Switch RIT for Mercyhurst and Canisius, and you might have something until the BHHC breaks up.

Re: NMU Wildcat 2011 Offseason

Bottom line NMU - beg to join the WCHA or make a major powerplay move and get involved in a merger of the CCHA and WCHA. Time for President Wong to get out of his lethargic coma and step up!! NMU has been in a daze sitting around watching this unfold.....they had their shot a couple years ago to re-join the WCHA. If they don't get involved in a big move of their own, they are in serious trouble. This non-action and statements by Wong, we are weighing our options is foolish. Too much is at stake. I don't think anyone wants NMU to drop to D-3 in five years, but the warning bell is sounding, folks. Come on Wong!!

Re: NMU Wildcat 2011 Offseason

If NMU wants in with the remains of the W, I think they're in. They would be a good fit and the WCHA will be happy to add a team like NMU at that point.
