NMU Wildcat 2011 Offseason

Re: NMU Wildcat 2011 Offseason

Why is a local series a bad thing.

NMU/MTU should get two games home and home every year.

Playing MTU does nothing for NMU when it comes to securing a bid to the NCAA tourney. Beating Tech does little to boost NMU in the PairWise rankings while losing to Tech can sink the Wildcats.

Financially, NMU has a lot to gain by playing Michigan Tech twice in Marquette, but only if those games are scheduled on the weekends when classes are in session.

Re: NMU Wildcat 2011 Offseason

Can I point out something interesting here?

This has been my observation: The NMU contingent as a whole seems very OK with the idea of not playing Tech. The Tech contingent is NOT OK with this idea. Very, very interesting mentalities.

Is that a statement, or a question?
/Grammar matters, hosers.

Tech fans are worried they won't get a minimum one win a year. And a potential two wins per year if they don't play us. :D

In seriousness, I think part of that goes back to the mentality of the programs. NMU is more concerned with developing players and not hosting the Walt Kyle Invitational at JLA. MTU is worried about which player wins the "Wildcat Slayer Award."

Didnt tech beat NMU last season?

And NMU also went 1-1-1 against MTU, but advanced to the NCAA's. Would sweeping MTU have helped us? Most likely not. Losing to LSSU and UNO hurt that year more than MTU.

I'm GLAD to be done with the MTU "rivalry" for a while. It's a much needed break.

Re: NMU Wildcat 2011 Offseason

Look, I'm just as tired of seeing teams like LSSU, Ferris, Bowling Green, and the like. The difference here? They're conference mates, we have to play them. Tech is NOT. Therefore, despite geography and a past rivalry, there's nothing saying we HAVE to play them. Why not take the dates and bring in some fresh faces?

Re: NMU Wildcat 2011 Offseason

NMU has long played nearly all non conference games against WCHA teams, or have played at holiday tourneys hosted by them. There's no thinking of the future about it. It costs too much to fly to Hockey East, the ECAC or AHA schools.

Then why is MTU playing St Lawrence and American International in NC games?

Bad scheduling on techs part.

I remember when MTU and NMU played each other seven times one season. Two home, two away and two playoff games and a game at the GLI. Now we cant even get two games.

The "glory" days of the old WCHA are over. In fact, with the B1G conference, the "glory" days of the current WCHA are over too.

Why TECH does or doesn't play Eastern teams is immaterial to who NMU schedules. NMU chooses to schedule teams that better fit their budget. Plain and simple. Just because Tech chooses to fly out to play doesn't mean NMU has the money to do so. Or that NMU chooses to spend its dollars in other ways, such as recruiting.

I agree with charter members Minnesota and Wisconsin gone in two years. You will not see a Big 10 team come to the UP ever again after next season.

Wisconsin is not a charter member. They joined in 1969-70, ten seasons after the WCHA was formed.
