NMU Visits DU: Who <3's Ice Cream???

Re: NMU Visits DU: Who <3's Ice Cream???

This weekend's series is big for both teams in terms of PWR. Gwoz said in his press conference the other day that this could be the biggest series for DU in terms of the national tourney this season.

With 4 star forwards not dressing due to the WJC or injuries, DU is down to 20 skaters and 3 goalies. That means that all but 2 of the available rostered players will dress each night. Up front DU is going to have to get scoring from Anthony Maiani, Kyle Ostrow, Shawn Ostrow, Dusty Jackson, Nick Shore, Luke Salazar and Chris Knowlton this weekend. I would expect Gwoz to dress 11 forwards and 7 d as he has been of late. On the back line look for Donovan and Makowski to put up some points. On the PP I would expect Dusty Jacskon to be in the goalie's grill looking to screen and deflect shots. DU's 3rd line this weekend will consist of its normal 4th line players. Forwards that normally don't get a lot of ice time are going to get it this weekend. Time for these players to grab the brass ring and show what they are made of.

Friday's game is being televised on FSN Rocky Mountain and FCS Pacific at 6PM MT. The Friday game time is 1.5 hours earlier than normal Friday start times. No TV for Saturday but it will be webcast for a fee on Pioneer Vision at www.denverpioneers.com.

Re: NMU Visits DU: Who <3's Ice Cream???

Take Bennett, Zucker and Shore out of the lineup, and DU is very hampered offensively, especially if Gwoz is talking up Dewhurst, whose DU production remains tiny.

The Boys had better hope Sam Brittain brings his A game - these are important PWR points at stake.

The wise and all so powerful Swami has turned pessimistic. Forecast? DU sweep.

Re: NMU Visits DU: Who <3's Ice Cream???

Chambers says in latest entry that Gwoz is thinking about starting Murray Friday night. I knew he was thinking about by the way he talked about it Tuesday in the press conference. I think it's a good move. Keeps both goalies working hard.

I have no idea who will be in net for the 'Cats. Ellie was playing really well and then Coreau has played the last two games (if I remember correctly, its been awhile).

Actually, Coreau played the last game while Ellingson played the Sunday game at Notre Dame. That after Coreau stole the Saturday game with 51 saves.

My guess would be Ellingson tonight and Coreau tomorrow but the Cats are in good hands either way.

H-E-R-P-E-S! What's that mean? STAY OUT OF THE BOX :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

I am really concerned about the frequency in which we are taking penalties this year... I'm not sure exactly where it's coming from since I have only seen 1 game in person, but it has to stop... Playing over half a game shorthanded is inexcusable... You can't give national caliber teams like DU chance after chance and expect them to blow it time and time again...

I really would like to know why penalties are such a problem this year... Not saying that NMU has been a team of angels in the past, but this season, it seems that we are burning a ton of energy, both mentally and physically, on the PK... As the season progresses, this can take its toll... Was this what spurred the meltdown last night?

There's no question trying to kill all the penalties took its toll. That and the altitude, of course. ;-}

As a Denver fan, NMU had the game under tenuous control after two, with a Pioneer team sputtering with disinterest, rust, and out of synch with all the key missing players. When DU came out hard in the third after sleepwalking in the first two periods, NMU had a tougher time keeping up, and the Cats' frustration turned to bad penalties. The surprise to me was that the bad penalties continued and never really stopped until Denver had scored 5 unanswered. Kyle tried to get them to stop, but at the end of the day, players need to take control of themselves. I expect to see a more disciplined NMU team tonight, as you'd think that last night's game should have been a fairly severe warning. This game is hard enough to play when you play it well, but you simply can't give a top 10 team chance after chance to climb back in the game on the road.

Re: NMU Visits DU: Who <3's Ice Cream???

What a god-awful third period that was to watch last night.

Is the game tonight on television?

Re: NMU Visits DU: Who <3's Ice Cream???

A couple of interesting officiating decisions on Saturday night. Denver scoring a shorthanded goal with five skaters and a goaltender on the ice. Denver being awarded a penalty shot because the officials ruled that the NMU "D" had closed their hand on the puck. When the whistle blew, the puck was sitting on open ice just outside the crease in full view. Interesting note from Friday, Fox Sports putting up Northern Michigan University as "UNM" in the score box on the upper left of the screen. Thanks to the fan that pointed it out and Facebooked it to me. I passed the info along to a camera man who relayed it to the producer and got it fixed in time for the second period. Of course, I also said "Denver Broncos..." on a few occasions...guess that's what leaving on a 7 am flight and getting dropped off by the airport shuttle at the arena and hour and a half before game time will do...

1) I think the DU SHG was certainly suspect, as it was happening on a line change. Not sure if that would be reviewable or not, but I would not dispute that DU caught a break on the play. But it's not as if DU didn't have tons of other scoring opportunities where NMU caught a break.

2) The Penalty Shot was called almost immediately by the ref who was standing behind the goal looking directly down on the play. My guess is the NMU player closed his hand on the puck, realized his mistake and let the puck go as the play was blown dead and the Penalty Shot called. Salazar missed the PS anyway.

3) Walt Kyle was very upset after the game and refused to shake hands with the DU players. I know Walt, and he's one of the best guys in the sport, so for him to act like that was very ususual. He also blasted the refs, at least in Theresa's USCHO game story.

4) NMU scored two goals on its first three shots on Brittain who was obviously rusty after the X-Mas break. After that, DU really limited the NMU opportunities. Final shots were 47-13 DU, with Coreau doing an awesome job in the nets for NMU, and DU missing several open nets. Frankly, Walt should be happy his team got the tie on the road, as DU totally dominated the last two periods. If DU had it's 3 most talented players in the lineup that night, I think DU wins that game handily.

Re: NMU Visits DU: Who <3's Ice Cream???

If Kyle was upset with the refs, understandable. I'm sure he was upset with his team for the number and type of penalties they took. But the DU players did not make the calls and basically outskated NMU--just didn't outscore them Saturday night. Sportsmanship, Walt.

Re: NMU Visits DU: Who <3's Ice Cream???

I know I was only able to hear the game from a biased source (NMU Radio feed), but when Florek gets his stick chopped out of his hands, and an NMU player gets called for slashing right after it.... somethings wrong. Same goes for tackling down an NMU player in front of the ref (interference? holding?), and having the NMU player called for hooking.

I understand that we're going to be looked at a little closer since we ARE leading the nation in penalties, but ticky-tack bullsh** like that isn't helping our players understand what is and isn't a penalty.

NMU is leading the nation in penalties because they take alot of them. The WCHA is much more lenient than the CCHA is...
If you saw Friday's game on TV, the same reffing crew got the penalties pretty much right for both teams in a well-officiated game. On Saturday, the refs did not do as good a job as they did on Friday, that said, referees were not the reason NMU didn't win on Saturday. As I said, NMU had a good first 10 minutes, but the last 50 minutes was pretty much all Denver. NMU was lucky to get the tie with Denver putting 47 shots on Coreau to 13 shots on Brittain by NMU.

NMU has some really good outside speed on the wings, and I like the way their defensemen get into the play at the offensive end after a very strong breakout. They can also cycle pretty well, but where they struggled offensively was in the one-on-ones in open ice, and in close puck support. Gron is a terrific player and Florek has a nice shot. Fox looks like a guy who has some leadership qualities, and everyone was marvelling at Coreau's play. But I wanted to see more team skill from the Cats than I saw last weekend...
