NMU Offseason 2010

Re: NMU Offseason 2010

(Haven't read the Denver Post article yet but...)

Who's injured on the Avs that they're carrying 24 players? They need to get the roster down to 23 before the season starts. One more cut to go (unless there is an IR player)

I think the Kings are still carrying 30+ players, including Kaunisto...

I honestly saw Ray making the cut at the NHL or high AHL level.... Talent wise he's lacking, but he's a coach's player... He is willing to learn and put his head down and adapt to a system... I don't think he'll ever be a first ballot all-star, but he can go out there and earn a spot on a roster and be a locker room leader eventually...

Player............................... Injury ........................... Status
Peter Mueller...................Concussion.................Out Indefinitely
David Koci........................Broken Jaw.................3-6 week (return approximately late October)
Milan Hejduk...................Bad Back......................Day-to-day

My understanding is that Ray Train broke a bone in his foot early in camp. That ensured he was headed down. If you look at Sacco comments about Olver, "plays with an edge, disrupts the opposition, engaged in games", Ray certainly matches that description. With a 6" 3" frame, I would suspect it is just a matter of time for him.

Thanks! I'm glad that there is currently five wildcats that could be on opening day NHL rosters. :)

I'm stopping by this thread to let NMU fans know that a note in this morning's Denver Post reports that the Colorado Avalanche has announced its roster for the opening of the season. Mark Olver will start the season with the Avs. Colorado begins its season Thursday night by hosting the defending Stanley Cup champions: the Chicago Blackhawks.

I chatted with Matt this morning. He was on his way to Cincinnati of the ECHL (Rochester's affiliate).

Some updates to the alumni list. As usual, post #1 in the alumni forum (should be) the current list, with chatter at the end of the thread.

The 'Cats are officially 1 for 2 with NHL'ers for Opening Day this Thursday. Three remain in their respective NHL camps.
Mark Olver - Colorado Avalanche

Nathan Oystrick - <strike>St. Louis Blues</strike> Peoria Rivermen (AHL)

Mike Santorelli - Florida Panthers
Erik Gustafsson - Philadelphia Flyers
Ray Kaunisto - LA Kings

Brice better check his facts better. Last team to beat GVSU at Lubbers during the regular season was Northwood in 2004.

Ray is injured. He will be out a couple weeks, then head to Manchester AHL, Gustafsson is no longer on the Philly active roster and is headed for Adirondack. The Flyers have 7 vets and will need to move one to make room for him.

I'm updating the above post I made earlier in the week. This morning's edition of the Denver Post has an item detailing the four lines which the Colorado Avalnche will use tomorrow night against Chicago. While Mark Olver will be starting the season with the Avs he will not be in tomorrow evening's lineup.

Tomorrow's lines:
TJ Galiardi-----Paul Stastny-----Chris Stewart
Milan Hejduk----David Jones-----Matt Duchene
Daniel Winnik-----Ryan O'Reilly-----Brandon Yip
Cody McLeod-----Phillipe Dupuis-----Kevin Porter

Peter Mueller, acquired from Phoenix last season by the Avs, is out indefinitely with a concussion. His absence from the lineup is, at least in part, a reason for Olver's presence on the roster to start the season. But the news isn't necessarily bad for Olver.

The Avs were a young team last year and continue to be a young team this year. There are collegiately trained players sprinkled throughout the Avs lineup and at Lake Erie, the team's AHL affiliate. Colorado coach Joe Sacco played at BU and understands how well prepared collegiately trained players are these days. While Olver may not play tomorrow night NMU fans can be confident he'll get a shot with the Avs at some point this season. The five players in the Avs' starting lines whose names are underlined are all collegiately trained players. The Avs aren't the least bit reluctant to give such players a shot to play. Be patient as Olver will get his chance, too.
