NMU at Denver - Saturday 1/1/11

Re: NMU at Denver - Saturday 1/1/11

What a surprise. Are these legit penalties, or are the refs not letting the boys play?

The ones I've seen are legitimate (like last night) right out in the open and not close calls. I assume this is not normal.

Re: NMU at Denver - Saturday 1/1/11

When Bill Fitch was coach of the Houston Rockets, we did a daily live show with him during the season. And we alternated asking trivia questions. One day he asked what he said was his killer question: where is the hockey hall of fame located? I asked, which one? He knew he'd had it, since he was asking about the one in Evelyth (sp). He always claimed credit for at least one UND NC, since he had hockey players in a beginning skating PE course (don't ask). Anyway, he claimed he spent the time explaining to them the similarities between the fast break and the PP.

Hey Pio, thanks for the Bill Fitch story.

One of my great regrets is missing out on the opportunity to go to basketball camp while he was at UND. During the couple years it took for me to save up enough money to go, he moved on. The exploits of Fitch, Jimmy Rodgers (assistant at UND), and Jackson were a lot of inspiration for a young boy growing up on the tundra.

A very funny guy. You recall the female asst. AD at Georgia who got fired for insisting on academic rigor (imagine that), successfully sued and won a 7 figure settlement. I asked Bill for his reaction, he allowed as to how she looked better today than she did yesterday.

One time Utah came in to the summit and there was a big buildup, Carl Malone vs. Ralph Sampson. Ralph walked his dog for about 40 minutes. The next morning I asked Bill what do you say to a 7' 4" all pro who plays 40 minutes, gets whistled for 5 fouls, grabs 2 rebounds and scores about 4 points. Bill's answer: "Good bye." It's always golden to get to break a little news: the Rockets had sent Ralph to Golden State.

One last one: the Rockets were at home against Dallas. A rebound came off the rim and both Darnell Valentine and Hakeem Olajuwon had their hands on the ball. Hakeem ripped the ball out of Valentine's hands, and dropped in a beautiful turn around jump shot. I asked Bill about it the next morning and he said: "Darnell would have looked pretty funny going through the hole."

For 5 seasons we had Bill hosting a monthly dinner with about 50 of our listeners invited. He'd always bring a player and the highlight of the evening was when we opened the floor to questions. He'd always say "there's no such thing as a stupid question," then he'd deliberately pick the dorkiest looking guy in the room for the first question. After which Bill would say: "now THAT's a stupid question." I mean, he did this every time for five seasons, and it was hilarious every time.
