NMU @ Anchorage: We're Going Up North Again, Eh?

The Sully is very outdated, and yes there are plans to fix some things. They'll be adding a new floor, and new ice making system, new lower bowl seats, new boards and new NHL seamless glass. Unfortunately it won't happen for another year. The Aces (our pro team who also plays there) are working on getting sponsors to pay for a jumbo tron center ice score board as well.

We brought friends last night who had never been to a college hockey game, and they had a lot of fun. I can't remember a loss that was so entertaining. That game seemed very fast paced ... Northern can really turn on the jets when they want to!

As far as penalties, there were some iffy calls and non calls. Cameron skated over to a Northern player who was laying on the ice, and the official immediately called an unsportsmanlike penalty. I can only assume Brett said something he shouldn't have. Tsk tsk Brett! Dahlstrom slashed a Seawolf behind his knee pretty hard that would have given UAA a 2 man advantage, but it wasn't called. UAA got away with a couple trips. Hubsy was getting mugged out there, but he's pretty yappy so who knows what he was saying, lol.

Northern was impressive, one of the best teams I've seen at the Sully this year. Hopefully Thomas can come up with a game plan to get a much needed win tonight - with the loss last night they have pretty much kissed away home ice for the playoffs, IMO. UAA needs to get their power play clicking, and get their opponent away from the front of the net. Kamal was screened pretty badly last night, they were really packing it in in front of him.

It was nice to see a bit larger crowd there, I hope we see the girls from the Military Academy tonight. The guys were awesome last night.

That group behind the penalty box was loud, rowdy and really added to the atmosphere at the game. As far as the officiating, neither team gained an undue advantage from it. But there were some baffling calls and non calls both ways.

Re: NMU @ Anchorage: We're Going Up North Again, Eh?

An ice plant costs a lot more than $100,000.
No sh*t, but if you're spending $109 Million and making "value engineering" changes that ADD to the cost (additional seating, etc.), is not having an ice plant (or at least building the pipework into the building) that much of an additional burden?

The University of Nebraska is building a brand new basketball arena. They're putting in an ice plant for the hell of it even though they don't have any plans to use it.

I believe they said it was several thousand dollars to do it each time ... multiply that by how many times you have to do it and it adds up. However, the added revenue from more butts in the seats would pay for it. Better facility = better recruits = more winning = more butts in seats.
Plus money saved not having to pay rent, transport equipment, lost revenue from concessions and parking... Needless to say it wasn't a well thought out plan.

This was a major beef for many of the hockey alumni. Letters were written to the editor of the ADN calling out the former athletic director. At least put in the infrastructure so that ice could be added at a later date, but their pleas fell on deaf ears.

What? Baffling calls and non calls both ways in a Mark Wilkins officiated game? No way!

IIRC that's a local military academy. They showed up at a game last year and made so much noise they kept getting invited back.

I hope we see the gals tonight. The last time they showed up they made more noise than the guys did. You know, Huntsville had 2600 fans at their games last weekend, and they have only won one game all season. The thing about that is they allowed military and children to get in for free. I wonder what kind of military presence we would see if they did that? Or is that the promotion that UAA did earlier in the season? It sure is frustrating to see this team have such a good season, and such a good home record, and not see fans supporting them. The crowd was better last night, but still not good enough.

Re: NMU @ Anchorage: We're Going Up North Again, Eh?

You guys have a student section or pep band or anything like that? If not, someone should put one together for you. Those are the noise leaders of college hockey.

We do have a student section, but many of the students who come don't sit there. The attitude is pretty apathetic if you ask me. They have never had a pep band but they did have a group of drummers (Seawolf Thunder), but that group seems to have dissolved. UAA hockey games have never had much of a college atmosphere, unfortunately.

To those NMU fans reading this thread, yes, unfortunately the 'college atmosphere' at UAA games is pretty lacking attendance wise (as is the arena itself). In UAA's defense it is a non-traditional University, meaning that a significant part of the student body is not composed of the typical young adult set that you see at many lower 48 universities. As of the fall of 09' only 48% of the student population was between the ages of 18-24. As such, (and this is just my hypothesis) many of the students who might otherwise go are probably engaged in activities typical of older adults such as spending time with their own families at home, dining at restaurants, bar hopping, etc. The cost of tickets (as has been much debated on UAA threads already) may also be a factor but without hard numbers it's hard to know if this is really a significant deterrent to attending games or not. Of course team performance may be a factor as well, but as has been mentioned already by Suze the Seawolves are doing much better this season and attendance hasn't matched that improvement. It may be too soon yet for that improved performance to 'gel' with the populace. If they start to have consecutive winning seasons (especially with home ice for playoffs) this improvement may start to positively affect game attendance.

One attendance related anomaly is that the Sullivan arena was commonly sold out or had much greater attendance for some games in the mid to late 90's, but not much has changed in 20 years to easily explain that discrepancy. One culprit that has been mentioned is that there were fewer entertainment options in Anchorage as a whole back then, and perhaps more importantly the Alaska Aces were not a significant presence competing for the hockey fan's almighty dollar and fickle attention. As the Alaska Aces (Anchorage's ECHL team) surged in popularity in the early 00's after they joined the ECHL, perhaps they started to siphon off a good percentage of that former UAA fan base. In any case, I've sometimes thought that Anchorage is not big enough yet to support two major hockey franchises (the Alaska Aces and the UAA Seawolves). I have a hunch that it certainly can, but some dynamic will have to change for that to happen.

And as for lack of a band, if the bipolar bears up in Fairbanks can have a pep band for their games, I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility for UAA to have a pep band as well. Unfortunately I don't have an answer as to why there is no (at least as far as I can tell) formal relationship between the athletic dept. and UAA's department of music that could make a pep band possible. I know it's not as simple as just throwing a band together and shuffling them out to each game, but I would imagine there is no lack of musical talent at UAA that could fill those shoes, they just need someone to spearhead that initiative to make it happen. The Seawolf Thunder drum troupe was certainly interesting and definitely added much needed pep to the game but (and not to disparage their efforts in any way) to me it never really matched the synchronous energy you can get from true college pep bands. Ultimately whether or not UAA gets a pep band (and increased attendance, etc) probably hinges as always on whether or not it eventually gets its own ice arena. And a new arena, of course, has been the topic of endless debate on many Seawolves threads on USCHO and other UAA related sites.

I didn't even touch on the administrative and coaching kerfluffle that occurred in 2013, but that is already well documented in some of the other UAA threads on this site.

This is probably way more than you wanted to know about our program, but just some food for thought from a former UAA student.

Maybe you need to hire a polar bear to blow up the Earth ;)

Re: NMU @ Anchorage: We're Going Up North Again, Eh?

I think I figured out why UAA is listed in the top 5 for shots against. It's because the shot counter at the Sully falls asleep amid the period. NMU had 6 minutes of PP in the first period, and their shot count never changed from 1.

Not only is the SOG count inaccurate for NMU, but Kamal's save % suffers because of it.

Figure this sh*t out UAA!!!!!!!

Re: NMU @ Anchorage: We're Going Up North Again, Eh?

Not the greatest outcome for the 'Cats, but a "split on the road" is usually the goal.

Re: NMU @ Anchorage: We're Going Up North Again, Eh?

Well that was better. SEAWOLVES WIN! Pinkie! Fire it up! Time to bust out the PPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPARTY CANNON!!!

Re: NMU @ Anchorage: We're Going Up North Again, Eh?

Spilt! Nothing changes in the standing, and I forgot only the top 8 teams get into the playoffs. We will be nail-biting the rest of the season. How friggin' sweet would it bee if UA_ finishes ninth  NMU is a strong team, and I have a feeling we will be playing them in First Round. Geez wouldn't that be poetic?

I know that UAA blocked a ton of shots on those power plays and I honestly don't think anything did get through to Kamal. The Seawolves did a great job of keeping the Wildcats to the outside. Having said that, I do agree that the shot counts are not very accurate. Tonight I saw a few mistakes, but not as many as during the Mankato series.

Way to go Seawolves! We brought fans with us tonight (Aces fans), and they had a blast. Very fun game, congratulations on the win. :)

Re: NMU @ Anchorage: We're Going Up North Again, Eh?

It was a terrific visit to Anchorage. The UAA staff went above & beyond and the people of Anchorage were incredibly friendly. The nice weather was a great bonus consider temperatures around or below zero back Marquette! Looking forward to next year
