NMU 2024 Off-season. So....anything new?

Any insight on Connor Eddy? He just transferred to UMass Lowell and interested in the type of player we’re getting. Thanks!

Blue collar. Hard working, likes the physical stuff and has shown he can score goals. I was actually looking forward to watching him develop the next couple of years. Sorry to see him go.

Was there ever doubt about it being Shyiak? He was 2nd the last time. Whitten is interesting

Comley really wanted Renfrew, but couldn't get past him being off the bench for so long. I'm interested to eventually find out if he was offered first, which would not be a surprise.

Shyiak still felt slighted from the search that produced Potulny. If it was any other AD, I doubt he would have put himself back in the mix. Now let's see who he can assemble as a staff. Why not ask Renfrew if he wants to be the associate HC? They were on staff together for a year in 2001-02.

Whitten is the lowest paid head coach in D1 college hockey, and possibly in ANY D1 sport. He would have more than doubled his salary and seen a big jump in resources. But unless there was no other option, I doubt that Comley would have essentially dealt a death blow to his alma mater by poaching their coach so late.

I've thought of the Renfrew as associate HC too. It'll be interesting to hear what Shyiak has in mind.

Alum and USHL assistant coach Andy Contois has been tapped as an assistant coach.

I will admit that I was a little reserved at first with the Shyiak pick, but after listening to his inroduction, and them tapping a MQT native and alum as an assistant... well this is the absolute excited I have been about this program in about five years.

Let's #&$%ing GO!!!

NMU is adding Jesse Tucker from Clarkson out of the portal
14 points in 34 games in 23-24, was a +4. Spent two years at Michigan State before Clarkson

I like Tucker hard worker who makes things happen on the ice. He was at MSU and never understood Nightingale's management of him. New coach came in and put Tucker on the 4th line and he can produce. Either way Shyiak knows this and will utilize him

Thanks for the update. Sounds like a good addition.

Shyiak gonna get paid.

Base salary of 312k per year for four years.

Performance incentives include:
  • $2,500 for winning CCHA Coach of the Year
  • $5,000 for a CCHA Regular Season Championship
  • $5,000 for a CCHA Tournament Championship
  • $7,500 for an NCAA Tournament selection
  • $10,000 for an NCAA Frozen Four appearance
  • $20,000 for an NCAA Championship
It's a 30k bump over Potulny's, over 100k more than Joey Shawhan, and ~150k+ over Damon Whitten.

Coaching staff has been rounded out.

Shyiak as HC.
Recent alums Fox and Contois as assistants.

And a fourth coach hired: Former MTU head coach Jamie Russell's kid.

On social media, there've been a lot of announcements of recent signings. Seems like about 14-16 new freshmen, and 6-7 transfers in by my count. Can anyone advise me as to whether an up-to-date roster has been published anywhere? Just trying to sort through the conflicting information.

Anyone know when the Wildcats will release their 2024-25 roster? I presume the athletes will be on campus already this weekend; my daughter is a new recruit for the cross country and track teams, and she's set to report to campus on Sunday.

I keep checking on the roster, but I don't think they will post anything official until after practice starts.
So, from the rumor mill, or social media, are we doing okay? Did most of our freshmen stick around after Grant left?

What I've read/seen/pieced together, it seems the roster "should" be around 28-30 guys. Maybe 8 or so transfers in, and a solid recruiting class on paper. Going to be a young team, and probably take some time to gel. I believe there are only 6 players returning from last year. Most of the Potulny recruits remain committed; there were a few who went elsewhere -- maybe 3?

That's awesome, thanks for that information. Trying to decide if I am going to purchase the streaming package. I find the new service a bit vague when it comes to pricing.

Well, according to the Polls, we are going to battle Ferris for last place. Hopefully, we can surprise some people. I have no idea if I should be optimistic or not.

Well, if they do well, great! They beat expectations! If they're terrible, it was literally predicted. I am personally hoping for some surprises and a hopefully well gelled locker room this year.
