NMU 2011-12 Season Thread

Re: NMU 2011-12 Season Thread

Air Force just made it 3-0 halfway through the second. That would give MSU the comparison over NMU.

Re: NMU 2011-12 Season Thread

We're done. Air Force is up 3-0 near the end of two. Western is up 3-0 after two. And Harvard-Union are tied at 0 after two.

Doesn't matter who wins WCHA or Hockey East.

Right now, we're (okay, I am) rooting for Harvard to win to get the auto-bid and keep MSU out.

Re: NMU 2011-12 Season Thread

For getting booted in the first round, RPI kept it interesting. But when you can't get past the first round of your conference tournament, you don't really deserve to go to the NCAAs, so I don't feel bad about this too much.

Tyler Gron has signed with Bridgeport (AHL) and Andrew Cherniwchan with South Carolina (ECHL).

Does this mean that they will finish out the season with these teams? It looks like Bridgeport has six straight losses and could use Gron's help...perhaps.

In Tyler's case, he probably has as little as 3 to 5 games to show he belongs at that level, similar to what Pat Bateman had in Milwaukee and Darin Olver in Hartford. It's a tough road for an undrafted player. For Cherniwchan, the Stingrays are affiliated with Washington, whom Andrew has been to the tryout camp with in the past, and that likely is a part of his signing there. I would guess that he is pretty secure for the season there, depending upon how it interacts with his schooling and his goals in that department.

Big news out of 1401 Presque Isle Ave:

Athletic Director search has been narrowed to three:
http://miningjournal.net/page/content.detail/id/573922.html

Forrest Karr - University of Alaska Fairbanks Director of Athletics
Sean Johnson - University of North Dakota Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Affairs
David Diles - Director of athletics and chair of the Department of Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland

All three (from the limited knowledge of the article) seem to have unique skill-sets that they can bring to the table. Karr and Johnson both bring a knowledge of Division 1 hockey, where Diles (in my opinion) brings experience with all the other sports. Karr has been instrumental in driving the new WCHA from his outpost in Fairbanks from what I've read.

May the best candidate be selected by the University. All three seem to be what the University needs.

Cherniwchan also had a two goal night, but his Stingrays lost 5-2 to the Everblades.

Gron made the score sheet, but only with a penalty.

Of note, Florek's first assist was scored against Ray Kaunisto.

Re: NMU 2011-12 Season Thread

You are correct, Aparch, my bad.

I was a bit confused because on their Wiki page it said they switched in 2011 to an affiliate of the Devils, and when I saw them in Kzoo just a couple of years ago they had Islanders banners hanging in their rafter with that affiliation. I guess it's pretty unstable being in the ECHL.

Re: NMU 2011-12 Season Thread

Well, we're both right, as they have a split affiliation. The ECHL doesn't have the stability in affiliations as the AHL do, and the K-Wings have had a few different affiliations since joining the ECHL a few years ago. (The UHL/IHL was a joke.) The ECHL also allows to go affiliation free if wanted.

Also, former Wildcat Kory Karlander is also on the K-Wings.

Re: NMU 2011-12 Season Thread

The big AHCA coaches convention in Naples, Florida is taking place at the end of the month (April 25th through the 29th).
Quite quiet after the big hullabaloo from last year's convention.

The agenda for those curious:
http://www.ahcahockey.com/pdf/2012naplesagenda.pdf

Nothing jumps out at me this year. Only thing I've seen is that there is a four hour window for general b*tching about the NCAA "General Issues". College Hockey Inc. is noticeably absent this year. Also absent is the "shady Saturday morning meeting with votes" that took place in 2011.

It's definitely a much lighter conference on the Division 1 side this year.
