Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

The Begley character was so ashamed he shut up. But in real life, these guys have no shame and they never shut up. They are filled with the unshakable, uncritical, unquestioning spirit of their hatred, bred into them by their poisonous parents and sealed by their ignorance.

My preferred treatment would have been for the kids to laugh him off campus. They showed far more innate love and respect than I would have. Good for them.

Time to apply the First Rule of Holes, Ernst.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

But here is my question. Which would have provided more satisfaction to this clown? If everyone would have avoided him like he had Ebola, walked on the other side of the street, ran when they heard what he was saying? Or, when he got someone's attention to the point that they felt the need to sing to drown him out?

No question in my mind.

That's all many of these idiots are looking for --attention. For someone to get angry. For someone to respond. He baits them into a response, and like too, too many in today's world, the bait was swallowed hook, line and sinker.

Well, whaddya know, somebody gets it.

I don't care what would give him satisfaction.

Remember, this guy is not a troll. He's an evangelist in the literal sense of the world -- his goal isn't to get his jollies, it's to pass his poison on. To do that he drapes it in the garb of Christianity. Those kids showed him what real Christianity is. Of course he can never see that -- whatever bizarre life path / personal insecurities / mental illness led him to devote his life to the preaching of this bile make it impossible for him to understand that the evil he sees everywhere is really just his reflection in the mirror.

Ideally, yes, the goal is to let these creeps hang themselves with their own words. That's why God made the internet. But sometimes the idiocy is just too much. What the kids did was truly inspired mockery, since their very response showed everybody the contrast between the guy's ravings and the actual message of peace.

I don't know that they infringed on the speaker's rights. What the singers did was pretty childish (imho, the equivalent of putting your hands over your ears and screaming, "nah, nah, nah, I can't hear you.")

It also wasn't a very effective response. It drew a lot of attention to an idiot who everyone should have ignored.

The proper response is give the idiot a loud microphone and make sure everyone can hear him. That way we'll know who on that street is the crazy guy.

It's like one of my favorite scenes from "12 Angry Men." I think the Ed Begley character is spouting nonsense about "those people" and how all they are is criminals, and rather than try to talk, shout or sing over the top of his voice, everyone just stood up and walked away from the table.

Same thing should have been done here.

And of course you and OP would advocate for giving the Westboro folks loud microphones, right?

Set them up a stage right in front of a funeral home?

Possibly they could have drowned him out with a rousing chorus of "Die Fahne Hoch."

Ignore them. And allow the local cops to enforce appropriate distance requirements. There is no First Amendment requirement to provide sound gear.

Were you against the times where people formed lines to prevent the mourners from seeing or hearing the WBC members?

He just doesn't have any right to express himself. At least none you and the Hitler Youth think need protecting. Good thing the "students" didn't beat the crap out of him. Right? But you would have supported them if they had. Right? After all, he's a "fundy." Your intolerance is only exceeded by your arrogance. And the only Nazi around here is you.

The Westboro people too. Let them shout and prattle on. I'm not going to spend 3 seconds listening to someone talk nonsense. They want to stand on a street corner with everyone ignoring them as they shout out whatever idiot idea comes into their brains, have at it.

You're moving the goal posts.

The question is whether others can express their rights of free speech in competition with the the guy on that campus or the WBC.

The question is not whether the crazies, idiots and haters have the right to be crazy, idiotic and hateful. They do and I support their right - even in this forum.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

I assume you have a problem with this...

Don't think so. In this case the location of where WBC wanted to protest was being infringed upon. Not their right to say what they wanted to say, somewhere else. A little further down the road. Out of earshot.

Just so we're clear: this is your big argument stopper to prove you're not a Nazi when it comes to honoring free speech for people you disagree with?

Yes, because Nazis would have sung songs to combat people they disagree(d) with.

Just so we're clear - you're a hypocrite.

If this was anywhere other than a campus where *******s run rampant (in your mind), you'd have no problem with it.

L i b t a r d is now banned?

Lol!

As nearly as I can tell, only you and Kepler have expressed any hatred in this exchange. And because what some people say is hateful, it's appropriate to shut them up?

Put down your shovel, boy. Now you're just embarrassing yourself. I would have expected self described liberal students to understand (as you clearly don't) that free speech is for all. That's the whole point. Popular speech doesn't need protecting.

I won.

Your failure to denounce the bikers exposes your hypocrisy.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Sorry, I've forgotten when the original story leading to this discussion was posted. Did the people opposing the speaker (or whoever it was) do anything physical to the speaker or did they just yell over the speaker? And was this at a scheduled event of any sort, or just out in a public square?

Free speech only matters when the crazy guy is shouting not when the students are singing.

Public university (James Madison). They just sang songs, nothing physical.
