Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

I don't know why people are upset that she was nine and using an Uzi. It seems like a natural progression.

The boy and his family apparently didn’t realize that a shell had been left in the gun.

*facepalm*

Rule #0: Is the gun pointed in a safe direction?
Rule #1: Is the gun loaded?
Rule #2: Is the safety on?

A 5 year-old is incapable of understanding Rule #0, or that something as seemingly small as a .22 caliber bullet can be fatal. Thus, why 5 year-olds should never handle guns.

Agreed on all counts.

You may agree with me but the owner of the range doesn't.
Sam Scarmardo, the operator of the range, told a local television station, KTNV, that the girl was old enough to shoot the high-powered weapon, adding that the user must be at least 8 years old. “We instruct kids as young as 5 in .22 rifles,” he said.

What's sad is that this is gonna scar her for the rest of her life. If I had to guess, the family wanted to teach her at a young age how to responsibly handle a firearm and to be comfortable with one. If anything this will probably have the opposite effect as far as the latter.

The parents clearly didn't care about that. She'll need therapy for a long time to come. I bet the parents don't care about that either.

BS

You don't start with an Uzi and you certainly don't teach a kid gun safety with a weapon he or she is extremely unlikely to ever have/use.

This was for kicks and a video op.

IDK if I'd go that far, but it's obvious that they (or the instructor for that matter) didn't think this one through very thoroughly.

Yeah you might have a point there. Either way, I doubt she's gonna want to touch a gun for a very long time.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Yes and no.

They worked (and still work) at providing a basic level of security blanket for those in need, or for those at the bottom of the economy.

But they face(d) two problems. First, no government established program/benefit ever remains static. It can and will expand. It's simply the nature of all government programs, whether sponsored or promoted by the left or right.

Second, changing demographics in the form of population bubbles place stressors on the programs that didn't exist in the 50's, 60's or 70's.

The second problem could probably be handled, but not coupled with the first. Since no one wants (read: has the political will) to address the issues, we have the silliness that is.

Remember that the ultimate goal of these programs was not merely to relieve the pain of poverty, but to attack its root causes. The main problems were:

1. That goal eroded almost before it began. The poor don't vote and there are always plausible cover stories to deny them systemic reforms, so they are the first group that gets screwed in every negotiation.

2. Many Americans refused to admit we have a class structure, so social programs get repackaged as entitlements rather than charity. Entitlements balloon in cost and are vulnerable to the demographic trends you cite.

3. It's very easy to pander to racist narratives when poverty correlates with race. Hence the meme of the Chicago welfare queen (who never existed) and the general insistence by white people that they shouldn't have to "subsidize" the "black culture of violence." The irony is the typical recipient of food stamps is the white child of the fundies who vote to "screw those urban animals." The ideologues who oppose social spending stoke this fear to destroy the whole system.

I think people are finally starting to figure out 2. One thing the Great Recession showed us was just how little regard the 1% has for the 99%. The GOP can keep running deceptions like calling this "envy," but that act, long shopworn among the more educated, is even starting to grow old among the (increasingly, unable to find work) working class.

1. is a long term issue that I suspect is tied closely to 3.

3. is a huge. We really need the Martians to attack or something so that people will just cut the crap on race. My hope is miscegenation ultimately makes it completely moot (and gives us a population of multiracial super models).

There is nothing wrong with teaching a 9 year old gun safety, or even how to shoot a gun under adult supervision. There is no reason to ever give a 9 year old an Uzi or any other automatic weapon.

Yes, that's great that you think that. But, the GUN RANGE owner disagrees with you. I bet many other gun rights advocates would have an issue with passing a law that prevented this from ever happening again.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

I started on a Daisy pellet gun around 8 or 9. Dad supervised me at all times until I took Firearm Safety at 13, and I couldn't touch anything heavier than that (including my archery setup) without dad around until I was about 14 or 15 and he bought me a 20 gauge bird gun. Looking back, I think all of that was a reasonable progression.

A 9 year-old has no business handling an Uzi and a 5 year-old has no business handling any gun. Period.

Sure, and most laws are passed because common sense doesn't prevail in society. I bet there is no way in hell a law is passed after this tragedy.

The gun lobby fix is in. In 20 years the country will be even more urbanized and the number of crazytoon white preppers waiting for the race war will be much smaller, and we'll talk again.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Yay! Vigilante rule!

Just saying I won't lose any sleep over this particular case.

He went through due process. You are in favor of the law on the front end of this but not the back end?
