Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

It's almost as if they want to be able to say, "See what they did to my babies!?!?"

That's not really how parenthood works. But I'd say it's fairly indicative of the protesters' peaceful intentions that they brought their kids.

I wouldn't, but I'm spoiled, upper middle class, white and can afford a sitter. It seems like questionable judgment to me to bring kids anywhere that could turn ugly, but living in a "bad part of town" means your kids are always at risk. Just another gift from the Poverty Fairy.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Seeing as you can't even grasp the most basic of concepts, like peaceful protests turning violent, I wouldn't be talking...

I know of at least two message boards that would be infinitely better off if you wouldn’t be talking.
You are far and away the biggest clown I have ever encountered on any message board and your comments in this thread once again confirm that.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

That hits a bit close to home as my 74 yo pops thinks those are the greatest thing ever and jumps right out into traffic... waving away.

When he does (or any of the other socially awkward things that he does), I feel like a mortified teenager. :D

Thankfully, we meet him at whatever the destination 99% of the time.

Oh yeah... and I drink.

I didn't realize that this is something done elsewhere, figuring that it was just something the Irish kooks in St. Paul dreamt up to "take back Grand Ave.," or seomthing to the like.

Exactly. And if the police didn't start launching tear gas two hours before the curfew (provoking things to the point of violence) this would be a moot point.

Well, as a parent, I would have simply stayed home if I couldn't find a sitter.

The protesters' intentions aren't the issue. The environment that they are knowingly taking their children to is.

I live in Madison.

We've got all kinds of crap like that and probably more GD Prius's (what's the plural?) that can't go above 20mph (apparently) per capita than anywhere else in the world.;):p:D

We get it. You blame the police for everything and absolve the parents of their parental responsibilities.

When those kids grow up and commit a violent crime, it won't be because of bad parenting either, it will be video games and rap "music" that made them do it.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

People shouldn't exercise their first amendment rights or teach their children to because the police will likely provoke violence against those who do.

Yeah they've handled everything so well thus far, it's entirely the protestors' fault.

And an uncaring world.

My nephew just moved back to Minnesota from a small suburb of Madison, getting his master's there in biochem or something. He and his wife bought a Prius while living there.

When they bought it, it instantly reminded me of a Penn and Teller show that they did about BS things we spend great amounts of money on to show that we care but don't really matter. The Prius was included in that list. In fact, they had a lesbian couple on their first date drive down the Pacific Coast Highway, jammed full with the gear needed for a beach picnic, and gave their impressions of the car's capacity for hauling and fuel efficiency. As usual, the duo did a great job of presenting their opinion in an entertaining manner.

I've grown to hate those cars and find myself prejudging their owners - all wimps, professors and hippies as far as I can tell.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

The protesters' intentions aren't the issue. The environment that they are knowingly taking their children to is.

My argument is:

Parents do not take their kids into dangerous situations.
These parents took their kids to this protest.
Therefore: these parents did not expect this protest to be a dangerous situation.

Now to us watching tear gas and rock throwing on TV that sounds crazy. Something's not right here. So is it at least possible that what we are seeing is just a tiny fraction of what's really going on? This does seem to be an entire community on the street. Communities have lots of old people, mothers, and small children, none of whom are traditionally interested in looting and rioting. Maybe even at the height of the craziness these protests were still 99% peaceful, and the scenes we saw were isolated cases of violence that the vast majority of the protesters didn't even know about?

I've only been involved in a couple cases of public activity that was reported on by TV. In one case (the inauguration) the coverage was quite indicative of what was going on for most of the attendees. In the other case (a huge fire in Boston) the TV coverage made it seem like the bombing of Dresden, while the experience of it for the vast majority of those involved was, while not a perfect sunny day, far less dramatic and stressful, and not in any way threatening beyond the possibility of being run down by film crews tearing around the scene.

Everything we see on TV is a little play, put together by producers. The deceit is the medium itself, it doesn't have to be a conspiracy.

You also have the constitutional right to bear arms. However, I don't recommend turning over a loaded .38 to a 3 year old.

I think all some people are suggesting is that people use some common sense, especially with their children. If adults want to go down to a scene where people are throwing bricks at cops and cops are lobbing tear gas back, be my guest. But don't drag your kids along. That's just poor parenting, whether it's "constitutional" or not.

Like I said, clearly emotionally invested in one side of this issue.

I wouldn't either, it's illegal.

Ideally they'd hire a sitter if they can afford it or leave before things get violent (not an exact science mind you).

I know if only I could be perfectly objective like you *SPITS OUT MILK*

I'm pretty sure I'd just stay locked in my home. I'm also pretty confused as to what they're protesting. Seems to me that Cops shoot innocent and guilty people all the time. Part of the job. Try to be lucky in your life and avoid having to deal with them altogether is my philosophy.

Plenty of bad luck in the world and life sure isn't fair. Sometimes it's just your turn.
