Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Yeah, and wasn't releasing the name of the cop postponed because of security concerns? I'm sure the people brought in for security purposes could've used a heads up that such information was being released.

And what security concerns are there for releasing information on Brown allegedly being involved in a robbery?
Withholding the officer name for security reasons I can see, but honestly, just because the new group is there, doesn't mean they have to be let in on everything.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

probably too irreverent a question for this discussion, but just what kind of a job description is "activist" anyway? who's the employer? what kind of pay does one get? are there fringe benefits?

It's a euphemism for protester.

Really, you think this? First rule of a mess like this. Get out in front of it and make sure everyone is on the same page. Otherwise it just looks bad for everyone. Now Ferguson PD looks evern worse in the eyes of the black community. It looks like they are covering up and now snubbing a black state patrol Captain who last night was a hero to them (deserved or not).

If for no other reason, Capt. Johnson and his state patrol officiers saved the Ferguson PD asses last night by working to keep things calm, they deserve the respect to know what was going to be said. It was a pretty blatant snub. It's obvious that the Ferguson PD didn't like another agency coming into their territory and looking like saviors. Chief Jackson would rather be "right" than do what is best for his community.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

So now the public relations shoe is squeezing a different foot. Turns out the "gentle giant" (who was going to start college this week) wasn't so gentle after all. And the squealing of those who've invested so heavily in the narrative of an out of control cop stopping a guy for "walking while black" can be heard from coast to coast.

In the Duke "rape" case, we were told endlessly that that whore was on the honor role at her local JC. Similarly, we've been told endlessly that Brown was about to start college in a couple of days. As if that "proves" he wasn't capable of any wrong doing.

Brown was a big, hulking young man. I've seen photos of him posted (not in the MSM, of course) flashing gang signs and one where he's holding a pistol with a wad of money in his mouth. None of that automatically justifies his death of course. But it does require a little reflection. And an acknowledgement that we may have gotten what happened that night wrong. The part of the narrative that's never made sense to me is the claim that the officer somehow engaged Brown through the window of his patrol car and tried to pull him inside the vehicle. That makes exactly zero sense.

But the store surveillance photos of Brown intimidating a helpless middle aged lady in that convenience store, at a minimum, go a long way toward dispelling the myth that this was a choir boy whom cops were hassling just because he was "walking while black."

Holy cow... a moment of clarity.

Agreed.

From my experience, all law enforcement agencies are territorial and i doubt any agency would like another one coming in, no matter how they looked to the public.
My point is, it was made clear from the outset of their appearence that the state patrol was not involved in the investigation, so they don't need to know every detail.
It may be good from a PR standpoint, but i'm of the opinion that at this point, no matter what the Ferguson PD does, the community won't look favorably upon them, which is a situation of their own doing.
But it is disappointing to me that I've seen so many people who are certain this evidence on Brown must be false/doctored/photoshopped, whatever.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Not that anyone will care, but the editor of the Missouri Times just tweeted that he had talked to our favorite police chief Tuesday and was told Brown WAS NOT STOPPED IN RELATION TO ANY CRIMINAL ACTIVITY. But I'm sure after screwing everything else up a week, the chief is telling the truth now.

I just read a couple of places that the kid was shot in the back, turned around with his hands up, and then was fired upon some more. But, will let Old Pio just all over him just the same.

It was a peace sign. It's amazing how out of touch you are.

Someone posted a collage this week of white people flashing the same sign captioned by the word "peace" and black people flashing the same sign captioned by the words "gang sign"

On its own, nothing. Given the timing and everything else going on, it clearly could reignite the situation. Clearly the sheriff thought so, since he left without taking any questions after dropping that bombshell on the crowd.

He deserves to be fired for gross negligence given his handling of the entire situation. As I said before, a two year old could've handled this situation better. The only people cheering him on are the Market Basket people, because suddenly they are no longer running the worst public relations campaign of the year.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Well, here's my attempt at a summary:

1. Kid shot.
2. Townspeople riot.
3. Police do react properly, in base form, but they wayyyy overdo it.
4. Change of guard for security/PR (proper move)
5. Shooter ID'd; cause for pursuit released
6. Three/four different versions of story come out
7. The city cops are completely inept at their jobs.
8. The townspeople have tinfoil hats on (re: photoshopping/altering the security video, kid was an angel)

Sounds like a great place to live.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Pointing automatic weapons and deploying tanks for a peaceful protest isn't exactly reasonable and yeah, they waaayyyy overdid it.

As far as the tinfoil, the Ferguson PD has had its share of issues in the past: http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/ferguson-police-2009-assaulted-black-man

Amid ongoing racial tensions in Ferguson, Mo., the Daily Beast reported on a 2009 incident in which city police beat up a wrongfully arrested African-American man and then charged him for getting blood on their uniforms.

Needless to say some skepticism here isn't exactly unwarranted.

Tossing molotov cocktails isn't peaceful protesting in my book. And disturbing the peace isn't, either. And what tanks?? There were no tanks.

And the pistol? And the wad of bills in his mouth? You're referring to one photo. I Own the World posted several others. But that's okay. You're emotionally invested in the narrative. And the security pics of that big ox with his hands around the lady's neck are, in the words of Ralph Kramden, "a mere bag of shells."

He was a legally armed man who showed off his earnings while working for the orphanage. Duh.

I don't know what happened. And neither do you. Although I'd be somewhat reluctant to take the word of someone who claims the cop tried to pull that big lug into his cruiser.

You don't have any photos of yourself that are somewhat embarrassing or not meant to be taken seriously? A lot of people in this country are infatuated with guns, not just Michael Brown. Heck some even take them to Target with them and the police don't bat an eyelash (wonder if race has anything to do with that...).

Not sure why I'm even responding to someone who thinks a peace sign is a gang symbol. You're utterly clueless.
