Re: Nice Planet XI: Stop the World, I Want to Get Off!

I don't have a problem with waiting this out for now. No reason to risk the lives of any law enforcement over these backward wastes of dna and obviously, we can't drone strike them - even though it would be kind of funny.

I do have a problem with nothing ever coming of this though like the standoff two years ago.

The occupiers need to be charged with the crimes that they are committing.

As someone else said, arrest them when they are alone at the grocery store or a cafe or whatever, but charge them eventually.

Same goes for any BLM protestors who break laws. I'm sympathetic to their cause, but if they're going to walk up an interstate or close down a mall on private property, charge them with whatever crime they are committing.

I was saying the same thing last night, and apparently that made me a racist. ;)

Re: Nice Planet XI: Stop the World, I Want to Get Off!

Isn't this the "Nice Planet" thread?

Where's mention of the "H-Bomb of Justice"?

That's the biggest threat we face this morning.

Kim Jong-Un with a hydrogen bomb ... nice planet.

He's had an atomic bomb for a while.

This "H-bomb" is being reported at 10kT. Compared to Fat Man (Hiroshima) at 15kT, and our first H-Bomb at 10MT.

Korea still has what they have had for a decade or so. Not that it's good. Just not as bad.

Re: Nice Planet XI: Stop the World, I Want to Get Off!

I'm an elitist. I am better than you, silly Sconnie. ;)

Haha.

Actually, I'm a FIB and we know we're better than all of you (Minnys and Sconnies) - when we bother to remember that you exist.

;)

So you're from Chi-Raq? I mean, that's the only city IL has, right? ;)

Johnny Manziel should trade a wig and mustache to Ethan Couch for the "affluenza" defense.

Re: Nice Planet XI: Stop the World, I Want to Get Off!

First indians, now this.

For years those of us who are wildlife photographers, birdwatchers and carers of wildlife, have been documenting the activities of you poachers and criminals around many of our nation’s wildlife refuges. With our powerful cameras, and ability to move unseen in the wilderness, we have found and documented your illegal hunts, your illegal traps and all sorts of illicit activities, and are constantly feeding that information to law enforcement, and we have finally got many of you poachers on the run and into jails.

As Oregon’s Congressman Earl Blumenauer just stated, “Armed insurrection is terrorism. The situation at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge shouldn’t be allowed to fester but should be dealt with firmly, swiftly and fairly. The continued disruption to the community of Burns and occupation of a federal facility is unacceptable. Those involved should be arrested and prosecuted.”

This is starting to look like a Coen brothers movies, where a simple plan immediately goes wrong in a hundred bizarre ways.

Extra points for the Comment section leading with non-ironic use of "Libtaard."

More extra credit: probably the best way to handle the whole thing.

Part of the pact you make when you do civil disobedience is to do the time. You go to jail as a symbol of your cause. You appeal to the conscience of the public which in a democratic nation can address the problem.

“An individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for the law."

― Martin Luther King Jr.

See, here's why I believe you're wrong and where the breakdown occurs between comparing BLM and MLK. MLK, Rosa Parks, and others weren't out for anarchy. They were protesting the businesses and services responsible for the racist segregation. A counter doesn't serve blacks? Sit in at the counter. A bus doesn't let blacks in the front? Sit in the front.

A cop in Minnespolis kills a person who may or may not have been handcuffed who may or may not have been going for a cop's gun after savagely beating his girlfriend? Shut down the airport on the busiest travel day of the year.

A cop in Ferguson kills a person in Ferguson who attacked him. Shut down the Mall of America.

Wait, what?

These people aren't freedom fighters. They're petty and common anarchists. They don't deserve our respect until they completely purge their leadership and actually do something of substance.

I agree. Protest in a manner that is productive, not destructive. And do the time if charged. BLM does not understand that fact, or they choose to ignore it. Hence, my dismissal of them.

Re: Nice Planet XI: Stop the World, I Want to Get Off!

It's not even about productivity. It's about protesting those who are wronging you.

Re: Nice Planet XI: Stop the World, I Want to Get Off!

So say...sit in at a police station because you think the cops wronged you? They did that and got flack for that as well.

And to play devils advocate, they believe the whole system is screwing them over...how do you protest that?

I dont like their tactics at all but their whole point is to get noticed by screwing with people's lives like they feel their lives are screwed with. From their perspective (again not mine) the minor inconvenience of having to deal with them shouting at MOA doesnt compare to a lot of the crap they deal with. They also know most of the people biotching arent going to support them anyways so why should they care? They want to get in the way so you cant just ignore them...

Now me, I wouldnt do that but i am also not a black person so I am not in the right frame of mind.

Re: Nice Planet XI: Stop the World, I Want to Get Off!

Fair enough, but back in the day, the whole system was actually screwing them over.

It still kind of is, not to the same extent, but I think they're going about it wrong. Making people stop ignoring you is one thing, but making them hate you is another.

This is misguided, childish anarchism.

By interrupting the general public, you do interrupt the government- as it's just a representation of the people.

Bear in mind, when sitting at a counter refusing to leave- when what they are protesting are the laws supporting such discrimination- they, too, are interrupting many people's general lives. The only difference is the scale they are doing it on.

Had the Minnesota protesters just marched on the police station, would you have even known about it? I'm pretty sure the rest of the nation would not have heard.

I'm not sure how you get anarchists from people protesting. Anarchists are against all government. As I saw the protests- they were protesting how they were being treated by government, not demanding for a total end of government.

Calling BLM destructive just because people did that during the protests- do you have any evidence that BLM told people to go out and vandalize stuff? I don't recall any of them stating that they are going to have an armed protest and that anyone approaching them will be met with violence.

The sit-ins at lunch counters were directly impacting those who were discriminating, blocking travelers at MSP airport was not directly impacting the Minneapolis police. It was directly impacting people who were trying to go visit their family, travel for work, or go on vacation. I feel it was a silly and ill-thought-out tactic. It's not getting anyone on their side who wasn't already on their side.

Add to that, the airport has its own police force entirely independent of all nearby cities' police forces.

As a supporter of BLM I agree with this. The civil rights movement tended to do thing that raised public awareness and provoked racist aggression but did not impede large numbers of unaligned or sympathetic citizens. Occupy did the same thing (which tells us that just having the right tactics doesn't always guarantee a win). BLM could do many things to shame the cops and appeal to the general public -- in principle they probably have an enormous majority of support even despite all the smearing being done by the usual idiots and their media enablers. But so far at least they haven't been smart. They need an MLK leader.
