LOLWUT? When did you turn into Scooby.

OK, you're smart so I'm not being clear.

The whole idea of these laws is to legislate the idea that personhood begins at conception. That's all they are intended to do. This has nothing to do with punishing crime, it has to do with winning a political battle that they haven't been able to win by legitimate means in the courts. It's a clever way to do it because most people will respond exactly like the people on this thread have done: "why should I lawyer a point for the benefit of a criminal?" That reframing of the argument is entirely intentional, because once you reframe the argument as such, joecct steps in and completes the strategy.

Jesus, I wish science would get off its as-s and render the whole thing moot. We should have reached the technological point where a woman can abort at home, in private, with no thumpers beating down her door or politicians branding her with a scarlet A to tub thump up some votes, and just in general with no men zeusplaining why it's not up to her. I know the US isn't grown up enough to fund that, but that's why god made the Nordics.

OK, you're smart so I'm not obviously being clear.

Life and liberty seem to be two polar opposites. Which one takes precedence?

At-home abortions would be a bad idea because there are medical risks to the woman. Still, there should be discreet entrances to those buildings, ones that don't offer the protestors a place to harass the women entering those clinics - especially since many of them offer pre-natal care for women who are intent upon delivering those babies into the world.

And what makes you think the protesters won't figure out those "discrete entrances"? They may cling to their Bibles, but they aren't as stupid as you'd think.

It's not a matter of stupidity on the part of the protestors, it's a matter of entrance design. There are entrances that have large areas of open space, and there are entrances that don't have these large areas of open space. The less space you make available, the fewer protestors your entrance will accommodate.

Why am I picturing the entrance in some back alley where a gang is...

I think we're talking about sticking a vacuum up woman-land here, not a pill.

I'm talking about better living through chemistry. Maybe if we took .1% of the money Big Pharma uses to research old man dick pills we could make this whole stupid thing go away so we could concentrate on important stuff like bathrooms.

Just have the entrance to the clinic go through a college. They've obviously never gone there.

You're preaching to the choir when it comes to pharmaceuticals. After all, many cancers are curable, but because there's big money in chemo, let's make sure the public doesn't get to access the cures and steal more of their money because they'll think one could be found.

Is this a "the government has had perpetual motion for years but Big Oil covers it up" thing, or is there credible evidence that curative cancer research actually gets low priority funding?

Put it this way: I'd believe it, as capitalism leads inevitably to sociopathic perverse incentives. But unless you bought off every doctor in America, that would be the kind of thing that would get a little attention. Doctors wanna comment?

Re: Nice Planet XI: Stop the World, I Want to Get Off!

This entire "There's too much money in chemotherapy to develop a cure" is absolute balderdash for two reasons:
1. One needs to look no further than the polio virus therapy that just received "Breakthrough" status at the FDA to fast-track funding for it. There are plenty of drugs in development to "cure" cancer*.
2. If you invent a drug that can effectively treat one or more forms of cancer, the patent on that would be worth billions if not tens of billions if it could target more than one form of cancer or treat the more common forms. Dick pills are valuable, but stopping cancer is worth far more. I just hope that a benevolent researcher reaches the cure before a corporation.

*The problem is that most of these aren't actual cures. They're treatments. As I understand it, they're just more advanced forms of chemotherapy. Instead of using what is considered traditional chemotherapy, they use more advanced and effective forms to help battle the disease. Adding to that, many oncologists don't like using the word "cure" because it assumes that the disease is gone. It's in remission.

Re: Nice Planet XI: Stop the World, I Want to Get Off!

Billy Walters has been indicted by the feds on insider trading.

Walters is the famed sports gambler who headed up the "computer group" that won (and continue to win?) millions betting on sports, primarily football. He was also the subject of an excellent 60 Minutes story that you can still find floating around Youtube, and the subject of an entertaining book called The Smart Money.

It appears this insider trading scheme is the same one that briefly ensnared Phil Mickelson (not as a criminal defendant, but as an "unwitting" recipient of the benefits of insider trading).

Aint life till 4 months. Becoming is not being. Abstinence is not murder.

Four months ...

They're all made up numbers.
