Oh, it was a common superstition... in the 6th century! (Actually more recently than that. My Mom is one of millions of lefties who writes with her right hand because the sisters used to force kids to do so, and that was as recently as the 1930's.)

Also, IIRC sinister just means "to the left," the way, say, gauche means "to the right."

Doesn't much of the world have a weird stigma about lefties, like they wipe their *** with their left hand so you never, ever eat with it?

I believe the Latin is sinsitra (left) from which “sinister” is derived, and “dextra” (right) from which “dexterous/dexterity” is derived; and that the French “gauche” (left hand) is the origin of the English word “gauche” which means “socially awkward” and “a droite” (to or on the right hand) is the origin of the English word “adroit” (skillful).

In high school I had a teacher who had a speech impediment that he said was caused by his parents and teachers forcing him to write right handed.

It's why they cut off the thief's right hand. He's now a social outcast as no one will eat with him.

We had a grad student from somewhere in Africa a few years ago, I was having lunch with him & he explained that to wave at him with my left hand would be the gravest of insults and I should never, ever, even think about doing it. Unfortunately not once, but TWICE when I saw him in the hall I raised my left hand in greeting... this after the earnest warning, talk about feeling like an idiot. I may have been carrying stuff in my right. Anyway, he did have a sense of humor about it and refrained from slaying me.
