I like how they needed to be told it was disrespectful to veterans, as if that wasn't readily obvious from the get-go.

It would have been hilarious if someone went up to the flag and hoisted it to full mast, then gotten arrested.

So you would get arrested for following half staff protocol? When taking a half staff flag down, you are you raise it to full staff, and then bring it all the way down.

Re: Nice Planet IX: Oh that's just GREAT...

What's pathetically comical is that they specified "just below half-staff". Is that even kosher according to the flag code?

Anything below full is considered as such,a t least according to the dictionary. However, like the upside-down flag, half-staff may be used to signal distress. So, if they really want to protest this, they should be flying either half-staff or upside-down all the time, not just one day a month. I think we can agree that they believe they are in distress because of said ruling.

The cool thing buried in that article is that even in that godforsaken part of the world where the elected officials (a) thought this would be a good gesture morally and (b) thought this would be a good move politically, there are still gay couples getting licenses and getting married. Justice comes even to what must be the heart of Mordor.

This was a big deal. The world has become a better place. It is moving.

You know what? **** those people. This is actually starting to anger me.

Go **** your backwoods hillbilly bigotry. I wish there was a way to put sanctions on this Christian/sharia law effwads.

Seriously. I'd love to see a federal mandate saying any city or county gets its funding (state and federal) cut off for 90 days every time they pull these bull**** moves. And if the state doesn't cut them off, the Feds cut off the state for 180 days.

No. Reverse-bullying is not how it works, it just fuels the herp-a-derps, and justifies their dumbest actions.

Bullshibby it wouldn't work. They're politicians. You cut em off from that sweet federal money and giving them less of it to make their budgets with, they're going to shape up and fly right in a big hurry. at a guess, 90 days of no federal money for some small town would probably work out be say about 3 percent or so of their overall budget. when they start crunching the numbers to figure out what other projects that city would have to put off or scale down to afford that hit, or at what they would need to do to make up that difference from their constituents. Soon enough, they'll figure out that they can't afford to protest gay marriage no matter how much God tells em that its Icky.

Re: Nice Planet IX: Oh that's just GREAT...

After some reflection, if they want to do the half mast flag thing, I think I would allow it. They're morons, but as long as they are following the law and issuing licenses, their little gesture is not high on the injustice list. I think of the obverse: what if prior to the decision a liberal county in a red state flew the flag at half mast to protest state-enshrined hated?

Yes, it is state speech and thus not protected, but protest is at the very heart of a free society and we should be careful about cracking down on it.
