Re: Nice Planet IX: Oh that's just GREAT...

Ths dukes are getting taken off the air because of the flag on the roof. T FF
Whatever happened to corporate free speech?

Or just taking it off the air because it was a terrible show?

TV Land is taking it off the air, because even though the flag was okay to show on tv last month, it's now not okay to show on tv.

And the question of the day is....... So?

Such things don't happen in a vacuum, but what could be the catalyst for it? What kinds of things could be happening to highlight the monstrous history of that particular flag? A terrorist attack? Racist groups trying to keep it flying over US government buildings where it has no place to be except as a symbol of dominance? Seven black churches burning down in the past two weeks?

Perhaps TV Land doesn't want to be associated with it now that it's being highlighted in the public eye? Well at least you still have autotrader commercials. Oh wait, they purposely cut the flag out of that.

Meh, that's how things change. Last month it was OK for rednecks to deny gays the right to marry, it's now not OK.

That's a little different. That's a law. This is a silly tv show (that actually wasn't racist in any way, shape, or form). One that actually promoted doing the right thing, especially in the face of corruption.

Right, even if they had to bend the rules a little to do those things. Mostly the Laws of Physics, but they were always about doing the right thing. That message seems lost on the Whitewashers.

I don't care, except that these reruns happened to be on pretty often in front of me as I was working out at lunch lately. So I was starting to associate the (closed captioned) Dukes with sweating my nuts off on a rowing machine.
The benefit of the cancellation is that yesterday there was an NFL cheerleader tryout thing on instead. Boo confederacy! Yay objectification of women!

Reducing women to t1ts will be the last creepy thing standing -- even Dan Snyder will bury The Washington Slurs before we see normal women on TV. It just makes way too much money. Watching Battlebots it is amazing that even though the "girl in the pits" is a manic pixie nerdgirl, when they go back to the hosts you still need a deer-in-the-deadlights bimbo because hurr, that's what you do.

In 500 years people will look back at our era and see our depiction of women as more fvcked up than plates in African lower lips or force-shaping Egyptian heads.

Doubtful. Highly, highly doubtful. Our depiction of women is purely biological. Our genetic ancestors and even cousins now don't have breasts as large relative to their body size. As soon as we started to walk on two feet, that's when females started being selected on the basis of breast size (they were a sign of fertility). Fast forward a few million years and now you have that trigger programmed into our very genetic makeup.

I disagree within certain degrees that the view of women changing over time. We're sexual beings by nature, and our treatment of women is hardly unique to our (American) society. It's only going to differ by what we find attractive from generation to generation. Instead of one body type being replaced by another as we've seen over the past centuries, we're going to see the male appetite to expand for different women as we simply grow more accepting of different desires and media creation continues to disperse rather than concentrate into the hands of the few. We're seeing it already in certain areas, just not in those high exposure arenas.

We're arguing different things. Yes, males have biological pre-sets to favor certain characteristics in women (the overdetermining one isn't boobs, it's youth). But every (up until now, male-dominated) culture puts its own spin on that. This is not inherently attractive -- it's just our pet rock. Other times and places have had theirs. Culture's contribution to a beauty standard is an overlay, and that overlay is usually about commerce and power. So, this is Miss America in the 1950s, and this is today.

As a culture starts to unwind whatever it was that originally made it energetic sours, and what's left is the artificial exagerration of its former characteristics. Until you get medieval hats so tall they had to cut higher doorways to walk under. This is a medieval hat.
