Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

Hard to believe that there's some sort of wide ranging conspiracy against Mr. Cosby.

Awful lot of smoke for there to be no fire...

Who'd have guessed?

Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

You know it's funny. All this time we've been making the joke about dropping the Cosbys off at the pool, who knew one would actually turn out to be a complete piece of sh**t?

Except it doesn't have to be a conspiracy for people to jump in. Think about the people from coast to coast who claimed they'd gotten adulterated Halloween candy. Turned out they were all liars. Some of this stuff goes back 45 years. And there's a difference between being a serial philanderer and a serial rapist. 'Course I'm the guy who doubts Michael Jackson was guilty, so go figure. We don't ever really know celebrities, do we?

Ummm... claiming that you got odd candy is slightly different than going (extremely) public with a rape allegation.

These women are admitting that they've been raped - something that many rape victims are loathe to do.

Lots of famous men sleep with multiple upon multiple women and the women rarely get more out of it than a memory. Seems rather doubtful that it's just coincidence that these women have decided to target an old teddy bear like Bill Cosby because they all felt jilted or used.

Where are the rape victims amongst Magic Jonson's 5000 partners?

I think MJ was guilty of SOME of it. But who knows Whacko's mental state? This is a thin connection, but after watching the documentary "Tyson" my opinion of him completely changed. He was the true definition of "man-child." What he did was wrong, but he had NO clue that it was really wrong. He was beyond exploited by Don King and others, and mentally...he couldn't comprehend some things.

As for the Cos...given the time frame, memories can change to what people want out of the situation, or what they think really happened.

Am I excusing Cosby? Not necessarily. Given the lack of conviction, and the "risk vs settlement" court cases (in general) that American lawyers love for their clients...I need a bit more proof than a he-said she-said scenario.

I'm not convicting Cosby, just saying there's an awful lot of smoke.

To your point(s) though, if this was simply the case of memories changing, how do you account for the number of women that have come forward? In addition, this phenomenon of memories changing would most certainly be a part of human nature for it to occur in so many individuals...

Where are the women whose memories of what their expectations were changed for all of the professional athletes, rock stars and movie stars who have undoubtedly slept with hundreds of women each. If this were a human nature sort of thing, law of large numbers would demand that many, many more of these famous people would have similar allegations leveled against them.

Something's not adding up for Mr. Cosby and we're likely never to know the whole story.

Tim Russert's widow, Maureen Orth, wrote a piece for Vanity Fair in which she said the only time the boy in the first case against Jackson made his sexual allegations was when he'd been drugged by his father. The kid was the object of a bitter custody dispute and what better way to prove you're the better parent than establishing your ex put the kid in the clutches of a pedophile? Jackson settled for 10 or 15 million. Maybe you wouldn't shade the truth for that kind of money, but I would. He was clearly the perfect mark. And the second family that made claims, seemed to me to be grifters, pure and simple. We'll never know, of course, But I found it interesting there weren't other "victims" who came forward and the cops couldn't find any souvenirs of his "conquests."

As to Cosby, I'm just a little reluctant to go along with "where there's smoke there's fire," because one doesn't necessarily automatically follow the other.

Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

We will most likely never know the whole story about either of them. They had too much money. We can lend our suspicions, but until proof...*shrug*. It's really sad.

Wilt Chamberlain says "I'll see your 5,000 conquests and raise you 5,000." We live in a time when we're more sensitive to these kinds of allegations. But the undeniable fact is we're dealing here with decades old allegations. The statutes of limitations have expired. And only one suit was brought and it was settled out of court. So that leaves us with "where there's smoke there's fire." And the alleged similarities between the various stories we're hearing, which tend to support the veracity of the allegations. This is exactly how people who claim alien abductions establish the "truth" of those claims: our stories are internally consistent and there are lots of us making those claims, so they must be true. Maybe, maybe not.

Some people will do anything to get media attention. Anything. And getting interviewed in the MSM and bathing in the sympathy and attention is plenty of motivation. Are the ladies lying? Who knows? They all seem to admit to having some sort of financial motive in getting next to Cosby. If things didn't work out the way they hoped, would they carry grudges? Maybe. Maybe they just relish the role of iconoclasts. Maybe Cosby is a dirty old man and has been one all along. I'm just reluctant to trash a man's reputation on the basis of unsubstantiated allegations by women who may have reasons for wanting to pay him back. Women who apparently got "used" by Cosby more than once. I need corroboration. Which so far has not been offered.

Carry grudges for all these years? That many women mad at the same guy for unfulfilled promises?

These women are all in what, their 50s and 60s? They have lives... children... grandchildren. At least one of them is still a public figure.

You really believe that 16 (or whatever) women would all simultaneously target the same guy - a guy who has been universally loved as the nation's dad/grand dad - to get media attention for themselves using a made up story of rape? Turn their lives upside down for their 15 minutes?

That doesn't even come remotely close to adding up.

I enjoyed Cosby's standup. Had tapes as a kid in the 70s. Watched the Cosby show every Thursday for years. Saw him in concert once.

Doesn't mean I know him or can simply write off these allegations coz I was a fan at one point or because he's a beloved public figure.

Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

Also - couldn't he sue them for libel? Why isn't he?

All of those paragraphs to circle back around to "where there's smoke there's fire." Everything every one of these women says may be true. But as of now, it's all just unsubstantiated, malicious gossip.

At the same time, why have 16 women come forward all around the same time? The man might be guilty of doing what they claim, but there's no way to prove one way or the other. At the same time, it just strikes me as a few of the women might have a legitimate claim, but others have globbed on hoping for a payday. Or it could be that one woman finally had the courage to come forward, and then others found their courage through seeing the first woman. There's no way to tell, but it's just all suspiscious to me in the timing, considering the new TV show that's in the works for the 2015 fall schedule.

16 out of 150,000,000 women in this country is a statistical autonomy. As someone who gets lied to on a daily basis as part of my job, it would not shock me if there's nothing there. It also wouldn't shock me if there's something there.

I've long since learned to not believe something just because multiple people repeat the same story, however. Sometimes what looks like smoke is just fog.

I don't think they all came forward at the same time. I seem to recall that one of them sued him 10 years go or so, and another came forward at that time to give testimony in the lawsuit.

Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

Yes and now (if you believe) Janet Dickinson she wanted to put it in her memoir years ago but Cosby fought her tooth and nail.

I dont want to believe it happened, and I give him the benefit of the doubt but it gets harder every day.

There's that. And there is the matter of his speaking out on various social issues (which was mentioned by the "comic" who started this all). Any number of black folks have expressed major resentment at Cosby's statements extolling the virtues of marriage and work and education and responsibility. Why did the WaPo chose this particular time to allow one of Cosby's "victims" the platform of an OpEd? Did they offer him or someone designated by him the chance to respond? Did they do any fact checking on the allegations?

What if Cosby over the years made it a practice to seduce young women by offering to "help their careers" with no intention of delivering? No drugs. No force. Just deception. That would make him a schmuck, not a rapist. And I'd say the victims of that sort of manipulation might want to pay back the old b*stard, given the chance. Well, now they've got their chance. That's just one scenario that might explain these multiple accusers. Of course, another scenario is that he's guilty as charged.

As I say, I'm the guy who's not convinced that Michael Jackson was a pedophile. If, as Maureen Orth wrote, the only time the first "victim" made sexual allegations was when he had been drugged, I have serious doubts. You give a 13-year old the right drugs, with a "therapist" looking for a particular answer, and the kid will admit to being Mrs. Woodrow Wilson. We saw a similar phenomenon during the day care witch trials of the 90s, where kids were subjected to repeated, coercive questioning by "therapists" who had made up their minds. This resulted in increasingly lurid and far fetched allegations against day care workers. Allegations which, without exception, turned out to be false.
