Re: Nice Planet 6: Get Me Off This Planet.

Yeah... I'm not the frat-boy type. Trust me on that. We pointed and laughed at them.

;);)

One really nice thing about SCSU was that it only had 2 or 3 frats on campus and one of them didn't even have a house, it was simply a "professional fraternity" open to both men and women, so not really a true frat.

I was asked to pledge TKE (by a high school friend) at the first college I went to and quite possibly would have if I had stayed there. That school (Western Illinois) had a robust frat scene and there wasn't much else to do socially in that town. The guys seemed cool and I went to a number of parties at their house.

I wonder when the complaints about genetically altered corn, which has been taking place for centuries, will happen.

"Not really a true frat" fits nicely, since most of the rest of us consider SCSU as "Not really a true school". :p

They don't? What about pototoes that have BT gene spliced into them? Another great Monsanto invention.

If you think this is the only example, guess again.

Genetically engineering insect resistance is not the same thing as "putting a pesticide inside the kernel of corn" as you seem to imply. This implication suggests that there is a chemical pesticide in the corn, this is simply not true. It is genetic, not chemical. It is completely different. There is no reason to think that genetically modified crops are any more dangerous than non-genetically modified crops, in fact, if anything, it would be the opposite. If you're eating something that is genetically modified to resist pests, then you're NOT getting the chemicals that would have normally been used to fight pests. But go ahead and keep listening to this BS, if it somehow makes you feel better.

But once you learned Reagan was a TKE it was game over?

The word you guys are looking for is "fraternity." After all, you wouldn't call your country a .....

Nah. Was only 18 at the time and just didn't know squat or very many people where I was. Like I said, I was thinking about it.

Moved to another state and worked for a year, enrolled in a different school, realized who I was and who I wasn't and saw the frat boys at my new school for what they were... falsely self-important.

Didn't really matter. Had my group of friends and only occasionally ran into the frats when they would show up at the bars and not get the reception they thought they were due. Was never much of a house party guy once I had a fake ID (19+).

At their house and in the "Greek" community, sure, maybe they were a big deal. In the bar scene? Please. We were professionals and didn't have time for false social hierarchies other than the one we were inhabiting ourselves. ;)

I've lost track of how many times I've argued with my inlaws on this - how exactly would a "pesticide" bind with organic molecules? If they're just "putting it in there" then why doesn't it get diluted as the cells grow and divide, etc. No rational thinking at all. You are completely correct that genetically resistant crops will REDUCE the amount of pesticide used in agriculture, which I hope everyone agrees is a good thing.

Just how many bodies is Rachel Carson responsible for?

Self righteous and prejudiced right from the beginning, eh? You and Jugdish, Mohammed, Sidney, Clayton and Lonnie?

I'm on record as thinking Michael Dunn should have been convicted of murder in the "loud music" case in Florida. I'm not quite able to understand why he was convicted of three counts of attempted murder for the three he shot at but not for murder for the youngster he actually killed. That said, I'm also unable to understand why racist demagogues continue to make an issue of "stand your ground." That law wasn't an issue in this case nor in the Trayvon Martin case. So why are they still yammering about it? George Zimmerman, IMO, was perfectly justified in using force to defend himself from a serious beating. Dunn was not. But in neither case was "stand your ground" advanced as a defense, as required by law. So why are the race baiters still talking about "stand your ground?"
